How can you tell if you are leaking amniotic fluid or urine?

It's not constant drip but it happens a few times a day mostly after I have made a trip to the bathroom. I have an appointment monday but until then I was curious if there was a way to tell at home, I have heard that amniotic fluid smells sweet, so how do you compare that to urine smell? I'm 19 weeks tomorrow, thanks

its most likey just urine...when you pee you do not empty your bladder competely...in what you say it sounds like your just leaking alittle of the urine that is still in your bladder.. have that problem after I had my daughter and ALL during my pregnancy  (+ info)

How is it that your amniotic fluid becomes "low"?

This may seem like a really dumb question, but how can amniotic fluid just become low? My friend is 33 weeks and went in today and they did an ultrasound for some reason or another and said her fluid was too low, so they might need to induce her within the next week or two if things dont improve. Before this, her fluids were fine, and she was not leaking (they confirmed with tests).. SO how did they just lower like that? I dont understand how it could happen.

What You Need to Know About Oligohydramnios
Oligohydramnios (too little amniotic fluid) occurs in about 8 out of 100 of pregnancies. It is most common in the last trimester of pregnancy, but it can develop at any time in the pregnancy. About 1 out of 8 women whose pregnancies last 2 weeks past the due date develops oligohydramnios. This happens as amniotic fluid levels naturally decline.

Oligohydramnios is diagnosed with ultrasound. The causes of this condition are not completely understood. In fact, most pregnant women who develop oligohydramnios have no known cause.

The most important causes of oligohydramnios early in pregnancy are:
• Certain birth defects in the baby
• Ruptured membranes (breaks or tears in the sac that holds the amniotic fluid)

Birth defects involving the kidneys and urinary tract are the most likely causes of this problem. That's because babies with these birth defects produce less urine, which makes up most of the amniotic fluid. Some maternal health problems have also been linked with oligohydramnios. These problems include high blood pressure, diabetes, an autoimmune condition called system lupus erythematosus (SLE),and placental problems.

Oligohydramnios may affect you, your baby, and your labor and delivery in different ways. The effects depend on the cause, when the problem occurs, and how little fluid there is.
• In the first half of pregnancy, too little amniotic fluid may result in birth defects of the lungs and limbs. During this period, oligohydramnios increases the risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and stillbirth.

• When oligohydramnios occurs in the second half of pregnancy, it is linked to poor fetal growth.

• Near delivery, oligohydramnios can increase the risk of complications during labor and delivery.

Recent studies suggest that women with otherwise normal pregnancies who develop oligohydramnios probably need no treatment. Their babies are likely to be born healthy. Even so, your provider may want to watch you closely. When treatment is needed, the amniotic fluid may need to be replaced with an artificial substitute once the woman is in labor.  (+ info)

Has anyone ever noticed amniotic fluid to look somewhat like vasaline after wiping?

I'm thinking I could possibly be leaking a little amniotic fluid. I will have a couple of little drips in my panties, but sometimes it's more. It does seem to have sort of a strange smell to it, but when I wipe it looks as if there is vasaline rubbed into the paper. Has anyone experienced this with an amniotic fluid leak before?
----------

I don't think(at least was never told there was and I asked before too) its leaking amniotic fluid. Its just discharge that sometimes thickens and turns clearish(such as your described, like vaseline) I've had this both my previous pregnancies as well as my current pregnancy. I asked my doctor before if it could be fluid leaking and she said that all it was,was discharge. Call the OB and describe it to them and they will let you know if there is cause for concern but I doubt you have anything to be worried about.  (+ info)

Will drinking more water increase the amount of amniotic fluid surrounding your baby?

I know that the amniotic fluid is replaced every few hours, but is the amount of amniotic fluid affected by how much I drink?
----------

Yes, it absolutely is affected by how much you drink. In fact increasing the amount of fluids you drink has been shown in studies to replace amniotic fluid much more effectively than by IV's.

A Cochrane review conducted by Hofmeyr and Gulmezoglu found that simple maternal hydration was an effective way of increasing amniotic fluid volume. The review found that to increase the volume of fluid surrounding their baby, women should drink extra water - usually two litres over two hours - although it was noted that drinking two litres of water in a relatively short period of time may be unpleasant and difficult for women and that if the mother experienced difficulties, this could be spread over a longer time. The review concluded that maternal hydration may therefore be beneficial in the management of these problems.(iii) In another study, Brace found that changes in amniotic fluid volume may be the consequence of the existing state of hydration of the fetus and, therefore, abnormal fetal fluid balance may be influenced by the mother.(iv)  (+ info)

Daughter in law is 36 weeks pregnant and has too much amniotic fluid and might have amniosynthesis?

My daughter in law has too much amniotic fluid and is 36 weeks pregnant. The doctor is going to do an amniosynthesis. Will this help and how much risk to the mother and baby is involved?
----------

In this stage the only possible risk I can think of a premature delivery, but the baby would be perfectly fine if born now. Too much of fluid can mean all kinds of things, but I am sure her doctor told her all about it.  (+ info)

I lost amniotic fluid in my first pregnancy, should I be worried on my second pregnancy?

I have a 15 months old boy. He was born out of a c-section at 39 weeks because I lost lots of amniotic fluid and my placenta was too red. My baby was born with 4 pounds. He was fine and very healthy. My husband thinks is time to have another baby, but I'm very scared. I just don't know if it's going to hapend again.
----------

My water bag got low when i was 6 months pregnant with my son i am worried about the same thing but try to make sure you drink lots of fluids which might help prevent this. I think my water bag got low b/c i wasn't taking un enough fluids and on top of that i was nursing.  (+ info)

What is it like to leak amniotic fluid?

I am 38 1/2 weeks pregnant. I am spontaneously feeling something leak out of my vagina. My panties have little drops of what looks like water. It has no smell. I have read that I could be leaking amniotic fluid, but wouldn't it be more than just a few drops here and there?
----------

it coudl also be discharge. I had it BAD with both my children. If it was your water it would have a "sweeter" smell to it. I would say call your doc and ask them for sure, it would be better safe than sorry. especially since you are due "anytime"  (+ info)

I am 36 weeks pregnant and last week my OBY told me the amniotic fluid is low. Will it effect the baby?

It was a recent development actually. A few weeks back the level of amniotic fluid was just fine.
----------

I had this problem when I was pregnant. I had to do weekly ultrasounds, and when my fluid level was below 5cm they had to do an emergency c-section. Mine was the same way, I had normal levels one week then all the sudden it was getting down to the critical level.

If your fluid gets too low it is possible the baby could press down on the umbilical cord, which can cause terrible things.

I am sure that your doctor will monitor you. I had to deliver at 36 weeks, and my baby was perfectly healthy. She only weighed 5lbs, but she did not have to go to the NICU or anything.

I would just rest as much as possible, and try not to worry. I know that is easier said than done, but you are almost there.

Good Luck, and I hope everything turns out ok  (+ info)

How long can a 5month old fetus survive in the womb without any amniotic fluid?

I am really worried about my friend she is in the hospital. The dostors are telling her they can't do anything until her or the baby gets sick, they want to keep her pregnant for as long as they can. Well the baby has no amniotic fluid to breathe in. My question is how long will the baby survive? The baby is less than a pound, I am eally worried about her and the baby I just want to make sure that she and the baby will be healthy. Please pray for my girl and her baby, any and all information will be appreciated, Thank you and God Bless.
----------

i dunno, but a 23 weeks a baby is viable, the longer shes pregnant the stronger the babies lungs will be, the doctors wont endanger her baby, my dad was a twin he and his brother were 3lb and 3lb 3oz respectively, i know its tiny but babies can make miracles if my dad and his twin could survive being so little in the 40's then i have every faith your friends baby can do the same, with the advances in technology shes standing a good chance. good luck best wishes my thoughts are with you  (+ info)

How long will it take for the results of an Amniotic Fluid Test?

I went to the doctor's office yesterday and was informed that the blood test results were positive for down syndrome. I have an appointment Thursday for an amniotic fluid test; Does anyone know how long before i know the results? I am so worried and overwhelemed. I could barely sleep last night.
:::sigh:::
----------

sorry to hear that i also had abnormal results & they did the level II ultrasound & the amniocentesis. They truly scare u initially but after the ultrasound everything turned out ok, im still waiting for the results for the amnio they told me it would take 7-10 business day, it is going on 2 1/2 weeks already. But when they do the amnio test they actually have to culture the amnio cells & wait for them to grow to tell the results so yes it takes a while. It was torture for me too, dont worry (easier said than done i know) just pray & try to relax on a beautiful baby. The false positives for these tests r very high, so it could be nothing! think about ur baby & good luck!  (+ info)
