air embolism??? Help!?

How long after him blowing air in me, we were goofing off n he didnt know, would it take to get an air embolism. What kind of symptoms would I have and how soon? Im 2 weeks postpartum,
I know the chances are slim to none. What I want to know are the symptoms and how soon after him blowing in me they would occur
----------

You are correct to worry (despite reassurances posted above) for air forced vaginally has been known to cause grave injury to women. In water skiing, for example. In addition your post-partum uterus is more fragile and vascular than usual.

The good news is that it takes a hefty wallop of air at pretty high pressure to do damage.

If you'd been hurt the air might have entered your retroperitoneum (and contaminated it with vaginal flora) causing immediate back and groin pain, steadily worsening.

If you embolised the endometrium with air you'd have experienced chest pain and shortness of breath within minutes.

I'm sure you're safe if you still feel okay, and if your pal isn't some operatic athlete with an airhorn for a mouth.

How long does it take to clear your lungs up after pulmonary embolism?

This is my second PE. If you are on coumadin, can you travel by air without worry?
----------

Your lungs will clear up eventually, and it can take from 3 to 6 months for the clot to dissolve, depending on the size of the embolism and how your body heals.

Coumadin is a blood thinner, and will help dissolve the clot.

Bleeding is the largest risk factor when taking coumadin. You will need to shave with an eclectic razor, and avoid bumping and banging your arms and legs because you will bleed and bruise easily. I would avoid using box cutters, and be careful when using a knife when cooking.

You will need to have your PT/INR labs drawn on a regular basis in order to check your bleeding times. Do not skip the lab work, as Coumadin takes about 24 to 48 hours to reverse should your bleeding times be too high.

There are also certain foods including cranberries, liver, broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, Swiss chard, coriander, collards, cabbage, and other green leafy vegetables that you will need to either avoid, or eat sparingly. These all have high levels of vitamin K, which will inhibit the drug.

As for air travel, I am not aware of any specific restrictions due to Coumadin. However, your physician may have reasons for you not to do any air traveling.

My advice for you is to speak with your physican and clairfy your travel restictions, if you have any.  (+ info)

air embolism during pregnancy? How long would it take to die from air embolism?

I am 3 month preggos and about 5 hrs ago i had sex with my husband. When we were doing it doggy style i heard a lot of air in there and am a bit worried. Also when i went to use the bathroom i felt a pain as if i was pushing some air out. Could this be air embolism. It's been 5 hrs and i had some back neck pain dunno if it's related.
How long would it take to die from this it's been 5 hrs so i dunno if i should worry.
----------

It would very unlikely you could get an air embolism through introducing air into the vagina. The vagina is a tube that opens to the outside air and when you douche, insert tampons or have sexual intercourse, air is automatically pushed inside. For you to have an air embolism, the air would have to be introduced into the blood vessels where it would travel to an area that it could cause harm. This can occur in divers who ascend to quickly, and during surgery and rarely during childbirth but I have never heard of it occuring any other way. I hope this helps you.

Is it possible to get an air embolism during pregnancy from intercourse?

I know you aren't supposed to blow into the vagina during pregnancy so as not to create an air bubble (embolism), but could you still get an embolism during regular vaginal intercourse?
Sometimes during sex (I'm 20 weeks pregnant), I will get air pockets that eventually expel from the vagina after intercourse. Could these create an embolism that could harm me or the baby? Normally it occurs after rear-entry (doggy style) intercourse.
Also, what would symptoms be if this did happen?

Thank you everyone! I called the doc and they said the same thing: basically as long as it is not a deliberate attempt to force air into me, everything should be fine.
WOW, stupid things to worry about while pregnant.... :)
----------

i think you are fine but just ask your dr. no need to be shy- he does see everything you have anyways. just ask. buti think your fine. its more for forced air- like deliberately forcing air into the vagina- like during oral sex.
good luck and congrats!  (+ info)

embarrassing masturbation question.. air embolism?

Ok, so i recently i read that masturbating using a water current can cause air embolisms. I have done this before on several occassions and i believe some water pressure has entered my vagina, although not much. My question is, if nothing happened then, is there a chance it could happen in the future, even if i never do it again? you know, like its built up or something? please help i'm really scared about this..

how many units/cc's of air will kill someone. (air embolism)?

i cannot remember from school, but looking on here, it seems there are so many different answers.. i have figured 100-400 cc's.. but i would like a definate answer, preferably one with links proving this.
dont worry, i am not trying to kill someone, but trying to help a friend out.. they ran an iv that had some air bubbles in it.. the pt had been in the hospital for a few days and died of "air embolism". i am trying to calm my friends mind by telling them they did not do it, but i need backup, that is why links would be great!!!
----------

The answer depends on the speed and location of the air entrained. 50 cc right into the left ventricle would likely caused the heart to lose its prime (as in "prime" a pump). In a leaky IV in an arm or leg, 400 cc would be required to make the pump stop.

What is likely to have happened is they were changing an IV site in the hospital for sanitation or patency and the patient was already shocky. The old IV site did not close and air was pulled in as the circulatory system went flaccid. Of course, you don't need air in the system once the arteries are flaccid. The left side of the heart, already weakened, will lose stroke volume and flaccid valves in the plumbing will allow that stroke volume to back-flow into the heart. It will only take a few minutes for the heart to stop under that severe of circulatory shock. With air in the system (400 cc, not the 10cc an IV line will hold) shock will even be worse.

As for your friends, it is almost NEVER the fault of the rescuer if someone dies. If you try to do a good job and a mistake is made, it is the fault of the circumstances the person dies. If they are too compromised and they die, still it is the injury or the insult of the disease, not the rescuer.

Whatever tiny amount of air was in the line is no big deal in the scheme of things. Have them run this experiment, fill a solution set with water. Drain it into a graduated cylinder. How much water is the same as the air the tubing could have contained. If it is not 50cc, there is no way to have caused the embolism, even going diectly into the heart.

What causes an IV site not to close is, 1.) flacid veins where the nuscle around the intima won't close or 2.) extra high blood pressure (250 torr or higher) where the venous pressure overcomes the muscle spasm and the clot.

Air can enter the circulatory system thru damaged lung tissue or at an arterial injury site on the outside of the body. Again, nether of these would be the fault of the rescuer.  (+ info)

What would happen if you inject yourself with 3ml of air?

Intravenously... Embolism? How long would it take? Does it hurt?

Only for medical staff/students. What happens if you get an air intravenous injection?

I have to write a short story for my creative writing class about someone committing suicide. I know that you can die for embolism but what actually happen to your body? What do you exactly die for (heart attack or what else)? How long does it takes? What are the major symptoms?
----------

If it is just a small bible the body will just absoeb it, no harm. For it to be dangerous you would have to have an entire tubing of air, or about 2cc's infused really fast.  (+ info)

air embolism and postions?

if a patient has and air embolish which position to you put him or her in
----------

It is not a matter of position. Position means nothing. You have to eliminate the source of the air embolism and to remove as much vascular air as possible. The proper treatment is a hyperbaric chamber similar to what divers use.  (+ info)

----------

Well I think that you're probably fine (I have gotten pain there during sex as well).. but you should def go to the doc to make sure; find out exactly what it is, if they can even tell you.. ya know? You'll feel better afterwards. Can you just go to the local clinic or Planned Parenthood?... they're cheap...  (+ info)
