Can you get a fatal air embolism from the Novocaine injection at the dentist?

Small amounts of air often get into the blood circulation accidentally during surgery and other medical procedures (for example a bubble entering an intravenous fluid line), but most of these air emboli enter the veins and are stopped at the lungs, and thus a venous air embolism that shows any symptoms, is very rare.

For Venous Air Embolisms, death may occur if a large bubble of gas (centimeters) becomes lodged in the heart, stopping blood from flowing from the right ventricle to the lungs (this is similar to vapor lock in engine fuel systems). However, experiments in animals show that the amount of gas necessary for this to happen is quite variable, and also depends on a number of other factors, such as body position. Very large and symptomatic amounts of venous air emboli may also occur in rapid decompression in severe diving or decompression accidents, where they may interfere with circulation in the lungs and result in a choking sensation or hypoxia.

Gas embolism into an artery, termed arterial gas embolism, or AGE, is a more serious matter than in a vein, since a gas bubble in an artery may directly cause stoppage of blood flow to an area fed by the artery. The symptoms of AGE depend on the area of blood flow, and may be those of stroke or heart attack if the brain or heart, respectively, are affected. The amount of arterial gas embolism which causes symptoms depends on location, but in the brain may be a bubble with a volume only a fraction of a milliliter.  (+ info)

Doctors, nurses, how many mLs of air would it take for an adult to get a life threateing air embolism if?

this enters the vein through an IV cath. How long the piece of the IV tubing full of air would do it?

I would be very afraid of air entering my veins going to my heart and making me short of breath and die... :(
----------

if it's through an IV catheter (like in someone's arm) it would have to take a lot of air to really do any damage. One of my old professors said at least 100ml's of air, but that might be low.

your body has a tremendous ability to compensate for air in the blood stream; the farther away from the heart the air enters the bloodstream the greater the body's ability to dissipate it.

I usually tell patients that when they're hooked up to an IV infusing something or other and they look down and see a few air bubbles go into their hand (and then they look at me all panicky...)  (+ info)

can rough sex during early pregnancy cause air embolism?

My BF hit my cervix while we had rough sex and it hurted but then went away. then an hr later the pain came back. then the next night it came back but not as bad. no bleeding or anything. has anyone else had similar experiences?
the pain is gone now once again. could this have been an air embolism it was about a day ago.
----------

Hon don't worry, if it were an air embolism you would not be here posting this question. Honestly though, you really shouldn't be having rough sex while pregnant. It can cause potential infections for you. Your partner needs to be more gentle with you now. As for an air embolism the only way one can happen is if he blows air straight into your vagina.  (+ info)

I said only doctors need to reply and answer this question!!
