are there books on elephantiasis?

library books not textbooks
----------

I don't know that there are books that cover filiriasis (this is what you're talking about) exclusively but you may be able to find library books that include it. The best place to go is to a medical library on a med school campus. You can also go online by running a search for either filiriasis or elephantiasis. Cool pictures.  (+ info)

Why Elephantiasis mostly appear in legs? Is there any specific reason for that ?

A tricky question that is not as straightforward as it seems at first! Clearly the swelling results from blockage of lyphatics and other circulation, and this is most often the result of filarial infection. BUT- the filaria do not enter the feet like so many other worms, instead they are tranmitted by mosquito bites. So, there is no clear reason why filarial infection should result in the preferential swelling of the lower extremities.

Unless- 1. it is only a matter of the hydrostatic pressure on the obstructed lymphatics which increases the swelling- this may be the case in dependent areas. OR 2. Other challenges to lymphatic drainage of the lower extremeities combines with the filarial obstruction of lymphatics to produce more backup of the lower extremities. This latter idea is recently supported by studies on the red clay in parts of Africa which abrades the foot and must be carried up the lymphatics to clear- it also predisposes to Staph infection which furhter clogs lymphatics.  (+ info)

Should i get a penis reduction?

I am always told that it hurts and its to big, none of the women i date want to stay with me.I am always told its to long and to thick.I was unfourtionatly born with a mild case of elephantiasis in my pelvic area.
----------

i too think you are seeking attention however according to wikipedia:

Elephantiasis is a syndrome that is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs and genitals. Elephantiasis generally results from obstructions of the lymphatic vessels. It is most commonly caused by a parasitic disease known as lymphatic filariasis.

Alternatively, elephantiasis may occur in the absence of parasitic infection. This nonparasitic form of elephantiasis, known as nonfilarial elephantiasis or podoconiosis, generally occurs in the mountains of central Africa. Nonfilarial elephantiasis is thought to be caused by persistent contact with volcanic ash.  (+ info)

i am having unilateral testicular pain and swelling since 5 months?

usg -unilateral hydrocele with normal bilateral testis
negative for filarial antigen .
taken doxycycline and norfloxacin for 7 days , but no relief.
please advice me .
----------

You have fluid on one side of the scrotal sack with unremarkable testes. I really can't understand why you're taking antibiotics for a fluid issue that is not necessarily pathological: A hydrocele is fluid and can be removed surgically. A UTI (urinary track infection) is not a typical cause of a unilateral hydrocele, so antibiotics really make no sense unless your physician's treatment course is designed to rule out an STD, which would be unusual since the symptoms you present are very localized, or some type of infectious cyst. Antibiotics should not be taken longterm, so I'm curious how long your physician expects you to take them. You should go back to your doctor and have a frank discussion of his or her treatment plan for you. It is not unusual to begin treatment with antibiotics while tests for infectious agents are being conducted, but that seems like a really long time if you've been experiencing this for five months! Regardless, it doesn't seem like you have all the information you need to understand your treatment regimen, so you really should consult your physician.

Good luck!  (+ info)

Is Prader-Willi Syndrome a technical term?

A technical term is a word or term that has a specific meaning within a specific field of expertise. I think it mostly affects children, so I guess it would be pediatrics. I know elephantiasis is a technical term, but I'm not sure about syndromes.
----------

Yes, even though it is a syndrome, it is still a technical term.

how is filariasis managed medically?

oedema caused by filarial worms
----------

filariasis is caused by a parasite and most parasites can be cured by medication. For filariasis they use Diethylcarbamazine (DEC), which is a general medication for several general parasites, mixed with albendazole which is alittle more specific parasite killer.

Also in 2003 they used a med that killed a bacteria that helped the parasite grow. Kiling the symbiotic bacteria also killed the parasite.
Hope that helps  (+ info)
