Can anyone tell me how long dry socket takes to heal and can it deal with a dressing in?

Nine days ago I had a difficult extraction and developed dry socket. After five days of terrible pain, the dentist fitted a dressing into the dry socket which eased the pain, although the dressing had to be topped up yesterday, and the topping subsequently came unravelled, so I had to go back. Can anyone tell me, firstly, can the socket heal with the dressing in or does it have to come out for it to heal? Secondly, how long will it take to heal and how will I know when it has done so? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

keep the hole(socket clean of anything...for example get a seringe and squirt into the hole with salt water to clean everything out....keep doing this...it may smell and taste bad....but....keeping foods etc out of the socket..is the only way for the socket to start to heal..i had one....i used salt water with a sqeezy bottle into the socket and rinsed the socket thouroughly so that nothing is left in the socket....once its free of any trace...of gunk or food it will heal nicely...take a good pain tablet....you may have to clean it a few times to get all particles of out the socket....other wise it wont heal over.....  (+ info)

How many times did you have to have your dry socket packed?

My OS said that this new stuff he is using has done the trick for a lot of people with one packing. But I am not so sure I am going to be so lucky.

Just curious to hear allll about your dry socket experiences to know that I am not alone in my suffering.

it shoulds do it in one shot so long as your not smoking. If you smoke it will tend to keep coming back since your constantly irritating it with toxic chemicals  (+ info)

How likely is sneezing 5 days after wisdom tooth extraction to cause dry socket?

I have terrible allergies and even my allergy medicine isn't helping. I'm worried about all the sneezing possibly causing a dry socket? It just started last night getting real bad.
----------

You should definitely be fine after five days. What's important is that you should always sneeze with an open mouth, in order to release the pressure. Suppressed sneezing can often cause little fragile veins in the nasal plexus to burst and produce minor nose bleeds.  (+ info)

How long after getting treated for dry socket can i smoke?

On tuesday i got my wisdom teeth extracted. On friday, today i went back to the dentist and they told me i had dry socket and then treated it. does this increase the time that i cant smoke? or can i still smoke after 5 days since the extraction?
----------

Since you got the dry sockets it still adds time to when you can smoke. I would wait at least 3-5 days before you smoke again. You don't want to risk another dry socket to begin. Hope this helps  (+ info)

What is the remedy for a dry socket?

I had a tooth extracted four days ago. I have, within the last couple days, lost my blood clot and developed a dry socket. It is so incredibly painful. Tomorrow I am going back to my dentist to have it treated. What are they going to do exactly to treat it?
----------

They'll wash out the extraction site and then place a medicated dressing into the socket.  (+ info)

What exactly is Dry Socket and how do I know if I have it?

I had my molar teeth out a week ago and all have pretty much healed except for this one down on the bottom. It is still open (as much as I can tell) and is hurting like hell all the way through that side of the jaw. Is this dry socket?
----------

Sounds like you may have dry socket. Dry socket happens after an extraction when the blood clot is removed. It's usually really painful and can last 3-4 weeks for the gums to heal. Dry socket delays the healing process.

I had all my wisdom teeth extracted and was warned about dry socket. You shouldn't smoke or drink out of a straw--the sucking will cause a vacuum in your mouth and pull out the blood clot. Don't rinse your mouth alot either because it'll dislodge the clot. Eat on the other side of your mouth--which is really difficult when both sides are affected and all you want is fluids constantly after an extraction. How do you keep liquid on one side of your mouth? With practice and patience :)

Lucky for me I followed directions and was pretty much healed by the end of the week. Sorry you're in pain. Ibuprofin helps alot....vicodin is better.  (+ info)

Is it possible to get a dry socket one week after wisdom tooth extraction?

I got a wisdom tooth taken out 7 days ago. A couple hours ago, the extraction site started getting sore. The soreness is gradually getting worse. I've been taking care of the site the way the oral surgeon instructed me to. Could this be a possible dry socket?
----------

Yes indeedy. Call the dentist.  (+ info)
