Why do I get diarrhea when I start a diet?

I just started it yeterday..
All I had to eat yesterday was a robeks shake for lunch, a plate of macoroni salad for dinner..

Today all I had so far was a slimfast shake and I blended frozen fruit in it.

Why do i have diarrhea?

I would think my body would be thanking me for not feeding it fast food and soda.
----------

because ur not eating full meals and ur starting to eat a little bit of fruit. for a diet, u cant live off man made shakes. thats garbage and it's impossible. eat what god intended us to eat!! why do u think we're all so fat?! eat grilled foods, vegies, fruits and drinks lots and lots of water. dont waste ur money on tons of man-made "diet" stuff and stay away from all fattening stuff like chips, fast food, fried foods, candy, chocolate, diet drinks (makes u retain water because of so much sodium). diets are so extremely simple and easy to figure out, i dunno why ppl make them so complicated. you're starving yourself on these shakes and 99% of people fail on them because their body is craving certain things that those shakes dont have!!  (+ info)

What are good things and bad things for toddlers with diarrhea to eat or drink?

My 4 year old has diarrhea. I know to keep him away from dairy products. What are some good and bad things for him to consume with this condition?
----------

The BRAT diet helps stop the diarrhea which is Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. Keep him away from grapes, prunes, raisins and too much juice which can make the diarrhea worse. Gatorade is great to make sure he gets extra fluids and replace those electrolytes he lost. I know it has sugar, but to me, a little sugar is worth the benefit of the gatorade. Lots of water helps tons too.  (+ info)

What could cause both of my kids to have yellow diarrhea?

They ate grapes and pears a few days ago, and ever since then they've both had the most foul smelling yellow diarrhea. They both had a fever the morning after they ate the pears, but it went away quickly and otherwise they act normal (not sick).

My mother in law says they just got cold, but I'm afraid it might be a bacteria or parasite. Anyone have any similiar experience?
----------

It sounds like there is an infection, a "tummy bug" of some sort- especially since there was a fever just before the onset of the diarrhea. It may have been some gerbie living on the fruit, which wasn't washed away- but being kids, it could just as easily been something on their hands as well. I wouldn't suspect any sort of parasite, as those don't usually cause diarrhea. At any rate, your first response should be to put them on clear liquids for a full 24 hours. That will make them cranky to say the least, but will stop the diarrhea. After 24 hours, they should eat bananas, white rice, apples/applesauce, white bread/toast, and crackers, plus all the clear liquids you can get down them. They should have no dairy products at all- no milk, no butter, no yogurt either. After the day of rice, etc- the third day you can let them have a bland diet, with grilled lean meats, defatted broth soups, veggies- but not salad veggies, and the rice, white bread, etc. If this doesn't stop the diarrhea, after 24 hours of clear liquids, you will need to visit the doctor for cultures and something a bit stronger. If it does stop it, then on the fourth day, you can give them live culture yogurt. They can have whatever flavor they like, as long as it has those live bacerial cultures and sweetened with real sugar. Have them eat a carton or two a day for two or three days, and then they can go back on the dairy products. You don't get diarrhea because you catch cold, you get it because something isn't agreeing with you. It's usually bacterial, although there are some viruses that can do it. And I think you can relax on the parasites.  (+ info)

What causes the abdominal pain you get when you have diarrhea?

Everyone has felt those spells of sever sharp pain that precede a bout of diarrhea. What causes it, I wonder.
I'm not looking for a treatment. I'm just wondering about the cause. Medical websites seem to focus on treatments and diagnosis. This is a science question more than a medical question.
----------

It's the bacteria in your colon. Diarrhea is caused by bacteria, or, in most cases, "dirty" food. Bacteria, which alters the food that passes through your digestive tract, may or may not cause extreme, or mild, abdominal pain.  (+ info)

What could be the cause of recurring diarrhea that just began this month?

I had diarrhea at the beginning of the month that lasted about a day. Two weeks later, I had the exact same symptoms. Now, about two weeks after THAT, I have the same thing again. The first time I thought it was food poisoning, and the second time I was less sure, and now I'm totally boggled. The things I'm eating now aren't any different than I've been eating my whole life, and I can't distinguish my diet between the times I have diarrhea and the times I don't. Any ideas?

You might have irritable bowel syndrome - it usually starts in your teens/20s but can happen at any time. Or you may have a bacterial imbalance. You should ask your doctor for advice.  (+ info)

What liquids or juices are good for a 4 year with diarrhea?

My stepdaughter just got diarrhea today and I want to give her liquids so she don't get dehydrated.
----------

Do not give your child sugary drinks such as: fruit juice or sweetened fruit drinks, carbonated drinks (pop/soda), sweetened tea, broth or rice water. These have the wrong amounts of water, salts and sugar and can make your child’s diarrhea worse.
If your child is having frequent diarrhea, do not offer plain water. Drinking only water may lead to low blood sugar or low sodium levels in your child’s blood.
To prevent dehydration, your doctor may recommend a rehydration drink designed for babies and young children, such as Pedialyte or Infalyte. This may be especially helpful if your child's diarrhea lasts longer than a few days. Rehydration drinks help replace fluids and electrolytes. Plain water doesn't provide necessary nutrients or electrolytes and may not be absorbed when your child has diarrhea. Rehydration drinks do not make diarrhea go away faster, but they can prevent serious dehydration from developing.
Do not give your baby or young child rehydration drinks for adults or sports drinks, such as Gatorade. These drinks do not have the proper balance of nutrients and electrolytes for small children.
if the diarrhea lasts more than 2days get her into the doctor!
good luck...its not fun and
it never feels good to see a child in pain you feel so powerless.
hold her as much as she wants to be held.  (+ info)

What is the difference between diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea?

Is there a fundamental difference between diarrhea and traveler's diarrhea?
----------

Same shit, different cause - LOL

No seriously, diarrhea is diarrhea, it's the cause that makes them "different". Travellers is usually just called that b/c the diarrhea is from ingesting bacteria from food/drink that hasn't been treated the way we do here in USA (or treated at all for that matter) and your gut reacts. It can be pretty devastating and can ruin a good vacation!! Be wary of what you eat in a foreign country, esp. tropical places

Is it normal to have diarrhea after an appendectomy?

I went into the hospital thursday morning adn by lunchtime they told me they would remove my appendix before it burst in my stomach. I came home friday afternoon. I've actually been moving around a good bit, but just today I started getting diarrhea on occassion.
----------

I didn't have diarrhea after my appendix was removed but we're all different. If you're on post op meds, that may be the cause. If it continues for another day, call the surgeon or take Imodium AD. It's in pill form & sold over the counter. It works great. Remember to drink a lot of "clear" liquids until the diarrhea is under control. (ex: water, tea, ginger ale or 7 Up, chicken broth, jello water. (that's unrefrigerated jello after it's been made)  (+ info)
