i am a type 2 diabetic , i have a infected abcess on the arch of my foot , from a previous operation , he tell

tells me i have a staph infection and will possibly have to operate and drain it. How complicated is this kind of thing and is there any other options that i might have . ?
----------

GET to the doctors NOW. My mother just lost her leg a week ago thanks to putting off an infected abcess on her foot. She's a Type2 diabetic. They operated on the abcess and put in pump/sponge for a few days. When they went to remove the pump, they did a bone scan and saw the infection had gotten to the bone. She lost her leg 5" from below the knee. All this from putting off an infected toe..which led to the foot..and then to the leg. Get off the keyboard and go straight to the doctor adn get it taken care of NOW.  (+ info)

could unexplained brusing in the foot of an older diabetic woman be gangrene?

my future MIL apparently has big bruising on her foot this morning...she does not recall anything dropping on or happening to her foot...she has some developmental or some sort of disorder plus other health issues but i highly doubt she'd forget hurting her foot, knowing her as i do...she is 69.

i am concerned about diabetic gangrene...i have not seen her foot but i want to make sure she gets checked out by her visiting home nurse.
----------

If it just happened it's not gangrene. Impossible.

She does need to have the nurse call the doctor about it. I'm glad she has a nurse to check on her. Thank God. So many don't.  (+ info)

As diabetic, I'm having prickling sharp pains under my left foot. What could this be, and what do I have to do

See your doctor quickly. The risk is of diabetic neuropathy or nerve damage as a result of high blood sugar levels.

People with diabetes commonly develop temporary or permanent damage to nerve tissue. Nerve injuries are caused by decreased blood flow and high blood sugar levels, and are more likely to develop if blood-glucose levels are poorly controlled.

In the early stages, intermittent pain and tingling is noted in the extremities, particularly the feet. In later stages, the pain is more intense and constant. Finally, pain sensation is lost to an area. This greatly increases the risk of severe tissue injury because pain no longer alerts the person to injury eg. when walking on hot surfaces or bathing the feet in hot water.

The worst scenario is subsequent tissue death in the feet or legs (due to infections or nerve damage), the leg may rot away and lead to necessary amputation to prevent the infection/damage spreading to other parts of the body.  (+ info)

Do diabetic foot ulcers ever heal?

My mom has had one for about 2 months. It still looks terrible but her hospice nurse says that it "looks ok". If it is not infected, will they go away or just kinda stay the way they are?
----------

I just went to the doctor yesterday about the diabetic ulcer on my toe. I've had it since early December. He says that they can heal, if the patient gets good care and nutrition. Mine has been healing very slowly, but it is getting better.

They do look horrid, don't they? I have to have my husband bandage mine, and he often comments that it's very ugly looking. I must agree with him, my ulcer is not a pretty sight.

The most important thing is proper care. She probably needs to have it cleaned and bandaged a couple of times a day. She needs to eat properly, too. It's VERY important that she gets all of her vitamins and minerals. However, she must take care that her blood sugars stay in control. If her blood sugars are too high, that ulcer won't heal, and it might get worse. So if she's not taking a multivitamin, have her ask her doctor if she should be taking one.  (+ info)

sore lump under skin on top of right foot, diabetic?

Hi i suffer from diabetes, and know that one of the most important things is to keep an eye on your feet. About two weeks ago i noticed a lump on the top of my foot under the skin, it wasnt realy uncomfortable at first but has become more painfull over time and seams to make my foot and leg ake. Just wondered if anyone had experianced this before or had an idea about what it could be. I do have a doctors appointment booked to get it checked out.

It is good that you have a doctors appointment. As a diabetic you should be under the care of an endocrinologist and a podiatrist among other specialties.

does anyone have diabetic foot neuropathy? my husband has it and tried Lyrica for a while but pain is back?

my husband was diagnosed with diabetic foot neuropothy about a year ago. has been tested for everything they could think of and found no reason for the pain. they put him on vicotin and lyrica for about 2 mos. it worked but now the pain is getting worse again. trying to find someone who is going through the same and if they have found any relief.
----------

diabetic foot neuropathy is caused from diabetes killing your nerve endings, thats the reason for the pain. my husband has had the same thing for years. you should talk to your dr. and you could try neurontin, cymbalta is an anti depressant but also helps with neuropathy, amitriptyline is also an anti-depressant/sleep med but also works for neuropathy. we have yet to find relief. Good luck. I know how he feels.  (+ info)

Question about diabetic foot wound?

My mother has a foot wound in her heel that's approximately one inch deep. She has type 1 diabetes and insists on walking, despite her condition.

She has no social vices and keeps her diabetes under control, but she's nearing three years with this wound and wants to know if there's anything she can do to make it heal that doesn't require six months of bed rest?
My mum is 53, and the wound is not infected. Her doctors have been mostly unhelpful, so if anyone has had success with similar issues, that would be of the greatest assistance.
----------

She is asking for trouble if it hasn't healed in three years and she is still walking on it!! Bed rest isn't necessary in every case. Have her try crutches to keep her weight off it. Or if she can't manage crutches try a Walker. She may hate it but it will be worth it if it saves her foot. My diabetes is well controlled but I got a foot wound last year and within a month lost two thirds of my foot. Good control is not a guarantee!  (+ info)
