How long after consuming gluten does dermatitis herpetiformis appear?

Okay... so after a gluten sensitive person consumes gluten, does dermatitis herpetiformis appear on the skin, an hour later, a day, a week... how long?
----------

There isn't a definitive answer. It depends on how sensitive you are. Also not all gluten sensitive people develop DH.

Here is a quote from Dr Green's book, Celiac Disease- A Hidden Epidemic.
"There is a definite spectrum of sensitivity to gluten in those with DH, and some people are exquisitely sensitve to even trace amounts. The occurrence of lesions after an ingestion of gluten (anywhere for several hours to several days) is another indication of this condition."  (+ info)

Does dermatitis herpetiformis from Celiac Disease resemble psoriasis?

Okay... is dermatitis herpetiformis scaly, red, and in some areas look like really dry flaky skin? (and when you put on cream it seems to come back/not completely go away)? Does it look anything like psoriasis? Does it resemble eczema?
----------

well in psoriasis the scales are white silver in color and when u remove it u find a raw surface with multiple bleeding points ,you can find that here in this site about psoriasis http://psoriasisdestroyer.blogspot.com/  (+ info)

How long after eating gluten does a rash occur when you have Dermatitis Herpetiformis (Celiac of the Skin)?

Looking more for information as to how long after eating gluten before rash appears - I assume it's not as quick as the gi issues but not sure. I don't eat gluten - but have had restaurant mishap.
----------

It varies from person to person. I haven't had an outbreak of dermatitis Herpetiformis or of alopecia in years, despite breaking the gluten-free diet on several occasions. I used to get both of those within days of eating gluten. My father, who also has the disease, has never had either.  (+ info)

I have been having a flare up of mild Dermatitis Herpetiformis. I have celiac disease (dig. 6 months ago)?

I just wondered if this could be linked to my thyroid. I feel very tired and my hair has started to fall out. The rash is on my neck and face. I have been on a GF diet, but I wonder if I keep getting some gluten from an unknown source?
I would love some imput. I am going to go to the Dr. next week to have him check my thyroid.
----------

Having an autoimmune disorder like celiac is an indicator of a thyroid condition.

The problem with thyroid tests is that they don't really work on an individual basis. My mom-in-law's thyroid test fell right in the middle of "normal" but her doc put her on mild thyroid meds to see what would happen. She reports that she feels like she's going through a personal renaissance.

As far as gluten in your diet that might be "hiding" check out the book "The Gluten Free Bible"-- it's really thorough on places gluten could show up without you even thinking about it. For example... modified food starch if GF if the product is made in the US, but may not be if it's imported. UGH!! My christmas wish is for better food labels.  (+ info)

What is dermatitis herpetiformis?

Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) or Duhring's Disease, is a skin disorder often associated with celiac disease. It is a chronic, extremely itchy rash consisting of papules and vesicles. Dermatitis herpetiformis is associated with sensitivity of the intestine to gluten in the diet (celiac sprue).  (+ info)

Celiac Disease & Dermatitis Herpetiformis?

Hey there, guys.
So I have Celiac Disease. I'm not explaining it, because I'm looking for someone that has celiac and has been dealing with the disease for a couple of years.

I've noticed itchy spots showing up on the side of my neck, both wrists and both arms, right under where my shoulder is located.
I've also had pretty bad acne and acne related bumps on my face since I was about eight years old. Could this all mean dermatitis herpetiformis for me?
Or is it simply a case of dry skin?

Help would be MUCH appreciated.
----------

A question back to you before this can be answered is are you eating gluten free and if so for how long? If you were just diagnosed with celiac disease or have not been completely gluten free, then it could be dermititis herpetiformis.

One thing you may want to add to your diet is a good gluten free multi vitamin and also omega 3-6-9 complex capsules.  (+ info)

i have Dermatitis herpetiformis is there anything that i can eat anymore i am also lactose intolerant?

what happens to my body when i eat wheat barley oats and rye and dairy? Like i know on the physical i just use the washroom but what happens inside and other than rice what can i eat?
----------

This is a question for a dietitian, I think. Do you have a dietitian in your area? If so, give them a call. If not, I think a doctor or a naturopath would be good sources of information. I hope you'll be feeling better soon.  (+ info)

I have Dermatitis Herpetiformis?! Gluten?

I just found out that I have this "disease". What should I do to treat it? What do I need to do to prevent it from happening?
----------

This is caused by gluten intolerance. You'll have to follow a strict gluten-free diet, which means no wheat. You may also be intolerant to other grain products which contain gluten. My best advice would be to google "celiac disease" which is also caused by gluten intolerance - your diet should be identical to someone with celiac disease. Also google gluten-free food products.

Best of luck! There are so many more gluten free products out there now, you'll do OK - rice pasta, rice crackers, corn tortillas, gluten free waffles and other products. So many are good!

Edit: took out my reference to the deleted question :-)  (+ info)

Does anybody have dermatitis herpetiformis, and what is it like?

I have been tested for Celiac Disease and lab work and biopsy/endoscopy results were "normal." However, the doctors agreed that befored I ate gluten free I had the classic symptoms of Celiac Disease. However, sometimes worse than the constipation and bloating, when I ate gluten (or if i accidentally consume it), my hands and elbows start blistering or turning REALLY raw red. If it becomes more widespread my buttocks and scalp will do the same. Sometimes my knees would itch as well. This is not the type of itching that could be soothed with some sensitive skin lotion, but it would feel like a BAD sunburn or like I sat in acid! Sometimes my scalp and hands would bleed. There would also be some mini- chickenpock like bumps that I could easily scratch off. I am 18, and this began around the age of 16. My grandfather had been type ONE diabetic, and I have a strange thyroid problem. There is a possibility that I have some other kind of autoimmune disease (RA, Lupus, ?). So... do any of you have Dermatits Herpetitformis, how were you diagnosed, and what does it look/feel like?
----------

The locations, elbows and buttocks are suggestive of dermatitis herpetiformis. It is the rash, very itchy, that occurs when you have an allergy to gluten and accidentally ingest some. Even with negative tests on endoscopy you can confirm the diagnosis with a skin biopsy. See the dermatologist. Avoid gluten. There is a medication available to help with the rash until the gluten clears your system.  (+ info)

How do I rid of Dermatitis on my hand?

I have dermatitis on my hands, it is between my fingers and a little patch on my palm. It is very itchy and red and has what appears to be tiny fluid filled bubbles all over it which sometimes weep after a shower and get itchier. I have a cream called Graphites cream which helps stop itching and gets rid of redness but doesnt seem to get rid of it. I read that dermatitis (i havent always had dermatitis, i was born with eczema and one day had a little dry patch on my finger which turned into dermatitis) is sometimes aggravated by wheat and lactose so should i quit milk and bread for a month see if there is any difference? I'd like to know if anyone has any 'cures' or remedies i can purchase when i go shopping or something homeopathic i can make now so soothe straight away. PLEASE HELP ME!
Ha! yes in a desperate bid last night to get rid of it i put some steroid cream on it, well lets say it quickly got washed of, it BURNED!!! I also heard nickel is a common trigger its in most coins and people always carry coins
----------

I would be careful using E45 cream - I know a lot of people swear by it but I have Ezcema and it does nothing but aggravate me and makes me itch more - i agree to get something non steriod based so it does not thin the skin - try acqueous cream - you can get it without a prescription from a local pharmacy  (+ info)
