Has anyone else's toddler had facial rash known as Perioral Dermatitis?

My son is 2 1/2 and has a rash around his mouth and eyes called Perioral Dermatitis. This was caused by using a steroid cream on his face a few months ago that was prescribed for a different rash. I am sad because the Perioral Dermatitis is usually chronic and my perfect baby boy might be fighting this ugly rash on his face for years to come. We were prescribed Elidel Cream, which worked beautifully as long as we were applying it daily. The rash went away completely until we stopped using the cream for a while. I don't want to use the Elidel Cream anymore due to the increased risk of cancer, but don't know what else to do. If anyone has any experience with this or any helpful advice, it would be appreciated! Thanks!!

i read that elidel is prescribed for atopic dermatitis wc is a form of eczema..so it might be that your child has an eczema(?)..furthermore, according to the website i found, it should only be for short term use and if any other medications or treatment fails..have you tried askin your pedia of other methods and treatments?and seek his professional opinion again about your concerns?Godbless   (+ info)

Question about seb derm and perioral dermatitis?

Hello everyone I have both seborrheic dermatitis and perioral/periocular dermatitis. My PD is much worse than my SD, as I'm experiencing extreme redness and burning around my eyes and mouth. I've heard the best way to treat PD is with antibiotics like tetracyclin and minocyclin... but I also know that antibiotics can often worsen seb derm. So I'm in a bit of a pickle.

What do you suggest I do?
Thanks a lot I appreciate the answer. But I'm not sure what anti-inflammatory salves are... is that like calendula oil? Currently I'm using honey as a cleanser and coconut oil to moisturize.
Ok thanks so much guys I really appreciate the answers from people who know what they're talkin about
----------

You are both correct and incorrect: antibiotics are a good partial way to treat PD, but do not in any way improve or worsen SD. Actually, the PD is basically an extension of SD, in which the inflammation from the SD causes the skin to swell in the areas around the mouth and eyes. When this happens, the pores are swollen shut, causing the acne-like bumps. So, the acne needs to be treated with the antibiotics, and the underlying SD needs to be treated with anti-inflammatory salves. If you don't use both simultaneously, you will not see improvement.  (+ info)

Which antibiotic is more effective to treat Perioral Dermatitis?

Erythromycin, Doxycycline or Tetracycline?

I'm currently taking Erythromycin 250 mg (low dosage) for one week. How long does it usually take to treat Perioral Dermatitis to clear off the rash completely by taking antibiotic? By the way, I was told to stop all creams and just wash my face with water. So don't tell me to use antibiotic cream. I'm very paranoid with using creams already because steroid creams has causing me to Perioral Dermatitis. :(

Do answer this if you have time, thanks. :(

These drugs may have antibacterial and/or anti-inflammatory effects that are responsible for their effectiveness in perioral dermatitis. Your doctor can have a better idea based on your specific situation which might work best for you and many times you have to try more than one to find the best one to work. Everyone's chemistry and situation is a bit different:

Doxycycline (Bio-Tab, Doryx, Vibramycin) Minocycline (Dynacin, Minocin), Tetracycline (Sumycin), Metronidazole (Flagyl), Erythromycin (E.E.S., E-Mycin, Ery-Tab), etc.

Good luck. It can take experimentation. Just be sure you are seeing a good dermatologist, or if you are not getting results, get a second opinion! Time frame can be from weeks to 2-3 months to show good results. Usually if it is going to help it will show within a month for systemic antibiotics like this taken for skin conditions.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Could a permanent retainer cause perioral dermatitis?

I have developed a weird, ugly dermatitis on my face that fits the perioral profile. The etiology is unknown, but there's a long list of suspects: all manner of personal care products, cosmetics, fluoride, fake cinnamon flavoring, food allergies, chemicals, medications, etc. I've tried many things & spent a lot of money trying to fix this problem, but it's still there. Now I'm wondering if the retainer I've had for 18 years could have anything to do with it. It's a long time to have a metal/cement thing in one's mouth. I know that the ADA claims fillings are totally stable & none of the material is absorbed into the body & all so no doubt that would be the official word about orthodontic appliances, as well. Studies show that fillings can certainly degrade and affect the body, though, so I worry that maybe I should get this thing out of my mouth. It's obviously different than a filling but does anyone know if this permanent orthodonture can be harmful to health?
----------

Not harmful to your health, but that does not mean that it could not cause some annoyances. In rare circumstances it has been documented that a person could be sensitive to many metals. Two metals that I have never heard of causing trouble are titanium, and gold. Both substances could be used to fabricate dental appliances, but gold is far more common.  (+ info)

perioral dermatitis?

Does anyone have this? It's basically little red pimples/redness around your mouth. Some say it's a form or rosacea. My doctor gave me Oracea (30 pills) and Metrogel, and it's hardly clearing up. Anyone have any tips for this, or general dermatitis?
Thanks!
----------

i have rosacea and yahoo has some great groups for rosacea.i used the metrogel for two months didn't work for me just dried out my face even more than it was.
here is what I've been using a sunblock from wal-mart $1.99 oz called [ocean potion]FACE 45spf its sold in 1oz circular container.i believe what helps is the zinc oxide that's in it.
also dry skin i'll use petroleum jelly at night before bed a little goes a long way.
look out for thing that trigger the rosacea like foods with tomatoes, alcoholic drinks, exercising, sweating, sex,too much sunshine, and some meds.there are a lot of triggers
and there are no cures you just have to learn how to control what triggers it off and read a lot of other group posts of what helps men and woman who have this disease
hope this helps  (+ info)

i think this mite be what i have...but not too sure
what do i need to do now if i think i have it....can this be fixed....what should i eat drink and put on face or not put on face

----------

well you have to figure out if it is contact dermatitis (to an irritant or product) or if it is your body causing the dermatitis.... you prolly need to go see a dermatologist bc they can help you figure out what is causing it... it is most likely not what you eat or drink....  (+ info)

How can you get rid of Perioral dermatitis???

It bothers me very bad to always have the annoying red rashyness under my nose and mouth! People always ask me wat it is too and I don't feel very comfortable telling them..."oh, it's just perioral dermatits." Is there anything taht gets rid of it. It seems to have gotten a lot worse in the past year too. I hope it doesn't cover my entire face...I'm beginning to freak out really bad here, i don't know what to do. I'm going to the dermatologist in a week or two and hopefullly they will give me something for it, but I know for a fact it's not going to work right away because they'll end up giving me the wrong stuff or something because thats what always happens. So is there anything else you've tried that works...?

Is there any cure for Perioral Dermatitis???????????????????

DO NOT USE TOPICAL STEROIDS. They are what cause it. Sometimes dermatologists prescribe them to wean your skin off them...my derm told me that perioral dermatitis is basically a skin addiction to steroids, so when you stop using them it flares up, like a withdrawal.
You can use oral and/or topical antibiotics. I'm currently on Oracea (an oral rosacea med to reduce inflammation), sulfacetamide (topical) and topical erythromicin. It's better than it was but very stubborn to clear up. Good luck.  (+ info)
