how long can it take for a Major Depressive Disorder patient to get well again?

I'm just wondering. I saw the statistics and it said 80 to 90 % of the time they get out of it.
What happens to the other percent?

and how long can it take? your whole life even?
----------

I think it depends on how long the person has been depressed. If the person has been depressed for many years, it will take some time to feel better. with the proper treatment. If it's the first time the person is depressed and they get treatment soon, it won't take such a long time.
I am one of the ones that fall into the other percent category. I have been depressed for many years. I am feeling better because of my therapy and the medications. I hope you are doing OK. Best Wishes.  (+ info)

Can a Major Depressive Disorder and an Anxiety Disorder be cured?

"Cured"? I believe that the more appropriate term would be "controlled". Drugs and therapy can put you in better control of these episodes, but the root tendency remains. This is much like my high blood pressure. It is "essential" hypertension (not caused by weight or diet, possibly a genetic tendency). I control it with mild medication, which I will always take. The medication maintains a healthy blood pressure for me, it does not "cure" the hypertension. So it is with the depression and anxiety. The types of drugs or therapy required to control tendencies may change over time, but one should not just throw away the meds when one "feels better".  (+ info)

POLL: If your teenagers treated you very badly when you were going thru a Major Depressive Disorder 4 FIVE?

years would you let it go? They were embarrassed/sick of it & DEFINITELY could not relate. (because they had never experienced it themselves). They were very cruel, but we wont go into that. Of course one can forgive but where does one draw the line?
----------

Did you ask them to forgive you for what you may have put them through? Or maybe "you were sick of it and DEFINITELY could not relate (because you never experienced it yourself)."

It works both ways, and they were children. Living with a major depressive mother sucks, I've been through it and I DEFINITELY can relate - with them. And of course I could forgive my mom, but she was very cruel, and where should one draw the line?  (+ info)

Can major depressive disorder(clinical deppression) cause hallucinations?

Somebody told me that. I just want to see if its true.
----------

YES.
Any kind of major depression can cause a person to hallucinate in different ways. Hallucinate by seeing and hearing things that are not truly there to others around them, hallucinate in the way of thinking that others are Out to get you, Against you, Plotting against you.
Depression affects a person's mental ability.  (+ info)

I am considering ECT for major depressive disorder. Has anyone had this done?

My doctor said there can be some memory loss and unlikely but possible cognitive effects. Anyone out there that has had this done and can tell me about some of the cognitive effects?
----------

Electroconvulsive therapy is the absolute golden standard for major depressive disorder with a 90-95% success rate, far above any other treatments. For people with major depressive disorder it is primarily used in one of two situations (a) a person is suffering from acute or chronic depression who is actively suicidal, resists other medical treatments, and requires immediate and significant treatment. (b) People who have treatment resistant (refractory) depression and have been unresponsive to medications. Typically these people have few other medical options (ie most, if not all, pharmacological treatments have failed), are gravely disabled and/or actively or passively suicidal.

After a person has ECT they almost always (99.999%) have short term memory loss and they may be confused and disoriented (this is partly due to anesthesia). For the vast majority of people the memory loss is small (6hrs or less) and little or no memory or cognitive effects continue. Some people do experience a loss of memory for a day or more, in some cases people have forgotten weeks or have memory gaps for up to one year. Having said that, multiple studies and anecdotal evidence indicates that people regain all of those memories. It is not too uncommon for people to have some minor memory issues for a day or so after the procedure. Should this occur it is usually little more than an annoyance. Some patients report some cognitive problems but often objective testing finds no cognitive change, this is likely a psychological issue that may be partly related to the stigma around ECT.

In the end, no matter what one person may say or what studies show it is clear that things can go wrong however that is the exception, not the rule. And people with severe, debilitating depression, with few other options typically have far more benefit than anything else. The vast majority of people actually find their depression is gone (or much less) immediately after waking so the antidepressant effects are almost instantaneous.

Make sure you get multiple opinions from doctors and make sure you understand all the potential risks and benefits and NEVER let a single anecdotal story change your opinion.

The majority of evidence indicates that aside from some short term memory loss there are no cognitive problems associated with ECT except in very rare situations  (+ info)
