Difference between Schizoaffective Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder w/ Physchotic Features?

I've been diagnosed with Major Depressive Didorder with Physchotic Feautures (Paranoia, hearing voices, etc.) but my diagnosis is very much related to Schizoaffective. I have the criteria for both disorders, so what's the difference. I have a mixture of depression symptonms and schizophrenia symptoms, which is why I think I may have schioaffective. My counselor says it's a possibility but how will I know?
----------

If you have psychosis in the absence of a mood state. Then you may have schizo affective.

I have bipolar with psychotic features my boyfriend has schizoaffective disorder.

The distinguishing factor is that he has schizophrenic symptoms in the absence of and in combination with mood disorder symptoms.
Where as I, so far, have only had psychotic symptoms during some phase or another of my bipolar.

Its hard to distinguish the two and over time the diagnosis may be changed if it becomes apparent that you have psychotic symptoms with and independent of mood states. But its hard to tell when your bipolar what mood state you may be in at a given time. Seeing the same doctor regularly and discussing all your symptoms over time will help them to be able to decide which really fits you best.  (+ info)

How do you handle major depressive disorder in your life?

I have suffered from depression for over 10 years. Do not currently take medication; but have in the past. Don't wish to have to use meds.
I am a christian and want to be victorious over this disease with God's help.
Any opinions or words of advice appreciated!

MAJOR DEPRESSION IS A CHEMICAL IMBALANCE OF THE BRAIN. YOU NEED MEDICATION TO CORRECT THE DISORDER, MOST LIKELY YOU YOU NEED TO CONTINUE TAKING THE MEDS TO REMAIN STABLE, AS MAJOR DEPRESSION IS ONGOING. THERE IS NO SHAME IN THAT, YOU NEED TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE IN ORDER TO BE AND STAY WELL. PLEASE NOTE THAT DEPRESSION THAT GOES UNTREATED WILL MOST LIKELY LEAD TO AT SOME POINT SELF- MEDICATION (DRUG AND ALCOHOL ADDITION) A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN, A LIFE OF MISERY, AND/OR SUICIDE. YOU NEED TO SEEK TREATMENT THAT INCLUDES INTENSE THERAPY, ALONG WITH TAKING AND STAYING ON YOUR MEDS.
TRUST IN GOD, HE MADE YOU THE WAY YOU ARE FOR A REASON. HE ALSO MADE DOCTORS FOR A REASON. PLEASE TAKE THIS ADVISE FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN WHERE YOU ARE. I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING FROM REOCCURRING MAJOR DEPRESSION SINCE 1993. MY UN-MEDICATED LIFE WAS NOT PRETTY, BUT WITH GOD'S HELP, AND WITH THE AIDE OF MY MEDS AND YEARS OF INTENSE THERAPY. I NOW HAVE A WONDERFUL LIFE, FULL LIFE, EVEN THOUGH I AM LEGALLY DISABLED BE CAUSE OF MY DEPRESSION. GOD WANTS ALL OF US TO BE WELL AND HE GIVES WHAT US WE NEED TO GET AND STAY THAT WAY.PLEASE TAKE YOUR MEDS !  (+ info)

What Are The Options For People With Major Depressive Disorder?

On antidepressants.
Had therapy for four years.
Is there anywhere in the UK I can go for intense treatment without being surrounded by the clinically insane?
----------

I just read a book that links depression and other mental problems to Hypothyroidism.

It is titled "Hypothyroidism Type 2, The Epidemic". -- by Dr. Mark Starr MD-- I got it on Amazon.com

I don't know where you could go in the UK for help.

Sadly, I recently came across a video on YouTube of a young man in England that needed thyroid help and was having a hard time getting it. -- Maybe you could watch the videos and see what help he eventually got. (There were several by him, I think some showed his improvement, but I just watched the first one.)

Good Luck!

Can you force someone with Major Depressive Disorder to take medications?

Both doctors feel like meds are the only way they will get better(until their situation improves which is no time soon). They have already attempted suicide in the past and have made future plans. As of now, they have given up on medications after several bad experiences. Is their anyway legally to force them?
----------

You can have them admitted into the hospital. You just have to have proof that they are not mentally well and cannot take care of them selves properly. Once they are admitted they will decide wether or not they should be on medication and if they decide that the person should be on meds then they will have to give it to them.  (+ info)

I have major depressive disorder and I am looking for advice for my boyfriend.?

When I don't take my medication I get irritible, irrational, negative and I push everyone away. Usually I don't remember much the next day. My boyfriend is wondering when to call 911 and if there are any resources that might be helpful to him.
----------

Try taking St. John's Wort if taking your medication all the time is a problem. It is a natural antidepressant. I sympathize with you, and I know that the two of you are going through a lot. It is great that you have a boyfriend who is so supportive. The two link below talk about the use of St. John's Wort and how loved ones can help through support. It also gives resources that will be helpful to you, your boyfriend, and anyone else in your support network. THis will be halpful whether you take it or not.

If you think you are becoming a danger to yourself or a danger to someone else, let your boyfriend call 911 or call a support hotline based on your collective assessment of the situation. You can always call a hospital emergency room and ask if you are in a situation that requires emergency care.

Take care of yourself, and good luck.  (+ info)

Is major depressive disorder considered a disability?

Would someone with this condition due to the side effects of taking increased levels of cortisol for another congenital condition qualify for disability income or state assistance if they currently do not have health insurance.

* I have studied psychology and along with self diagnosis I have been diagnosed by a licensed endocrinologist to have this condition.
----------

hello as a nurse i would tell you that yes it can be considered a disability if it affects your adl's (which are you basic of eating, bathing, drinking) things that keep you alive. now if you a normal functioning human being with a mental disorder that would not affect you at work i dont think you would qualify....in other words IT DEPENDS entirely on how much the condition halters your everyday life.  (+ info)

What's the difference between Dysthymic Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder?

Think of them as the difference between a flu and a cold. Major depression, is more severe but doesn't last as long whereas a dysthymia is milder but chronic.

Here are the symptoms of depression:
Depression

MILD
Lack of motivation
Low self esteem
Feeling tired
Isolating self - not seeing friends or family
Sleeping too much
Feeling sad or blue most days
Thoughts of wanting to die from illness

MODERATE
Losing sleep
Losing appetite
Losing hope
Thoughts of suicide with no intent
Feeling helpless, trapped
Having problems concentrating and/or making decisions

SEVERE
Feel hopeless and helpless
Thoughts of suicide become obsessive
Can be self destructive or self defeating
Thoughts of suicide with intent

People with dysthymia will stay in the mild range all of their lives if left untreated. It can be managed without medication however with proper diet and exercise. People with major depression go into the moderate and severe categories and usually need medication to deal with their suicidal thoughts.

There are other types of depression as well such as bipolar, situational type depression, and grief.  (+ info)
