Is a dental veneer makeover the only effective way of combating exposed dentin, caused by receeding gums?

No - you could go for gum grafts. This involves removing some skin from the insides of your cheeks (I think) and grafting the skin on to your existing gum tissue. People with receeded gums usually have this treatment. It is a fairly newish procedure and is very expensive but the results are dramatic. Makes teeth look younger, and whiter because it covers the exposed dentine along the gumline. But only to a small extent. If you have lost a lot of enamel the middle areas of your teeth are still going to look yellowy, with the tips of the teeth appearing transparent. Thus veneers may be the only option for some people.

3) bulemia
4) eating very acidic foods and carbonated beverages over a long period of time
5) drug therapy
6) drug abuse
7) congenital defects in tooth structure and development

and of course, combinations of those listed above.

What is the difference between cementum, dentin and enamel on teeth? And what effect does DS/RP have on them?

I am not familiar with DS/RP but I can define the layers of the tooth for you . The tooth is formed of a intraoral portion called a crown and a intrabony portion called a root The crown is made up of a thin but hard outer layer of calcified mineral called enamel ,that overlies a much softer more porous layer of calcified material called dentin . The dentin forms the bulk of the crown and root. The root is covered with its own calcified bony materal which is thin and fairly soft much like the bark of a tree.,and this material is termed cementum.  (+ info)

what are functions of dentin and enamel of tooth?

brief but precise answers please.
----------

TOOTH ENAMEL, is the hardest part of the tooth and also the hardest of all the tissues of human body. Tooth enamel is the outer layer of a tooth's crown. It is a protective tooth structure that covers only the visible part of the tooth. The roots are covered by another kind of tissue, the cementum.

DENTIN, is the softer tissue below the tooth enamel that forms the main mass of a tooth around the dental pulp. It supports the tooth enamel and absorbs the pressure of eating. The dentin consists of a number of micro-fibers embedded in a dense homogeneous matrix of collagenous proteins.  (+ info)

Chipped my molar, Dentin is exposed, Nopain what do i do?

I was eating some food this morning and bit down on something hard and it chipped my molar, right side lower 2nd to last.
on the front left corner, the dentin is exposed.
Tho there is no pain at all, just annoying cause my tongue naturally wants to feel it.

shouldi consult a doctor?
What could happen if i dont?

Thanks

Exposed dentin will decay very easily and the decay will go into the dental pulp and cause the death of the tooth. Have the dentist look at it. He may be able to place a filling or worse case scenario, it may need to be crowned. Good luck.  (+ info)

What can you about dentin showing through, and making your teeth look yellow, if you are still in your 20's

presuming you don't smoke, drink , use coffee etc etc
----------

Talk to your dentist. That would be an Intrinsic stain and there isn't a whole lot that can be done in that case. But as always I would recomend you see your dentist first who can better help you.  (+ info)

Dentin Hypersensitive and Heavy Calculus?

Is it okay to get dental cleaning with a cavitron, for heavy calculus build-up, without any anesthesia, on a dentin hypersensitive patient?
----------

Yes you can go for a cleaning  (+ info)

What part of the tooth produces dentin?

The odontoblast layer. This is a layer of cells that line the dentin inside the pulp chamber. If "the dental pulp" is one of your choices and "the odontoblast layer" is not, then choose the pulp.

If you search on "odonotoblast," you will get thousands of hits.  (+ info)
