No, this is a actually a common misconception of people who have multiple sclerosis, but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. But there is sufficient evidence that it does help decrease symptomatic pain associated with demylinating disorders.  (+ info)

our immune systems fight infections from outside sources such as bacteria and viruses.
sometimes, our immune systems goes nuts and start to attack us. The immune system mistakes some part of the body as a pathogen and attacks it. there is a long list of autoimmune diseases
including rheumatoid arthritis, crohn's disease, colitis, lupus, graves disease, etc.

The cause of autoimmune diseases is unknown, but it appears that there is an inherited predisposition to develop autoimmune disease in many cases. In a few types of autoimmune disease (such as rheumatic fever), a bacteria or virus triggers an immune response, and the antibodies or T-cells attack normal cells because they have some part of their structure that resembles a part of the structure of the infecting microorganism. since we're not sure about
the inherited part, i would not worry about it.  (+ info)

Pregnancy and autoimmune diseases/conditions?

Interested in hearing from women with autoimmune diseases/conditions who were pregnant or are pregnant. Did you have difficult pregnancies? Was your condition made worse or did it flare up during the pregnancy? Did it affect the baby's health? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
----------

I guess it depends on what the condition is; there is such a variety. I have psoriasis. Supposedly, the majority of pregnant women's skin gets much better when pregnant; unfortunately, mine did not. So, psoriasis-wise, my skin got really bad during the pregnancy, because I couldn't do any treatments or medication.
Because my condition is autoimmune, there was one thing that had to be done regarding my child, and it was only pointed out by the public health nurse when I took my baby in for vaccinations. I hadn't read about this or anything, and I did a LOT of research. My child had to get a different type of polio vaccine than is usually given. Unfortunately, I don't remember the name. The vast majority of babies get the "___" vaccine, and mine had to get the alternate one. One is "live", I think, the other "dead. Sorry, I don't remember, it was too long ago, but if this any concern regarding your condition, the dr. or health nurse should be able to help you out. It had to do with changing the baby's diapers and me coming into contact with his poop. Sounds odd now, but that's what it was...  (+ info)

Does anyone have Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy?

IIt's also known as Chronic Guillian Barre syndrome. It's an autoimmune disease where your immune system mistakes your nerves as foreign bodies and attacks the protective coating of myelin around them. It causes a very wide range of symptoms because it deals with the nervous system and is hard to diagnose because it can only be done after eliminating everything else. Does anybody happen to have this rare disease?
