can you have vascular dementia without high blood pressure, high collesteral or any heart?

My father is suddenly in full blown vascular dementia. He has never had high blood pressure, high cholesterol or any heart disease. He had several small stokes two weeks ago which has brought on this condition. He is on anti psychotic drugs and has been declared insane. He will be living in a lock down psychiatric hospital starting next week. How did this happen? He also has neuropathy.
----------

yes, those are risk factors but you can still have mini strokes from the aging process or just fragile blood vessles that give way.  (+ info)

Anyone have experience with vascular dementia?

My mum has this heartbreaking condition. Both my parents are 79. Dad is her carer and his health is suffering because he can't get too much of a break from her. Even on the toilet, she is knocking on the door, panicking because she cant see him. I looked after her for a few days and she cried the whole time, begging for Dad and feeling he must be off with another woman. Dad wants to put her in a hostel, but it would break her heart. Does anyone know if there comes a stage where you just know they have to be hospitalized. My poor Dad loves her, he just needs a break. We are prepared to share her between us, be we have our own families and it is not a long term solution
----------

Yes, I do know what you are going through. I have always felt that something will show you when the time is right to take a loved one out of the home. But, maybe in your situation, you will just have to make the decision. It sounds like that your dad is ready to break down phiscially.. It could be on a tempary arragement--even for a month or so. Just to give your dad a break. It will be so very rough but sounds like a this point, it should be done.
I am a care-giver--taken care of the elderly for 15 plus years. Worked in a hospital for 13 years before that. So really I feel pretty hard-hearted at times but I love the elderly dearly.
This really has not been full of advice but sometimes just knowing someone cares and will listen--helps.
The best of luck to you and your family. Don't know if you believe in God--but I will be praying for you  (+ info)

my Friend has been diagnosed with vascular dementia and gets very angry is this one of the symptoms ?

Have you tried vitamin B12? A lot of cases of dementia are simply a deficit in this because as we get older we have more and more trouble absorbing this nutrient from our food. Most doctors are aware of this and make sure to check a patients blood levels, and give them injections of this if necessary. Do you know if her doctor checked for this before making this diagnosis?  (+ info)

It interferes with the ability to work, to participate in usual social activities, and to engage in healthy relationships with others.

Dementia is becoming increasingly common. And while you may be familiar with its devastating effects, you may not know that a simple, diet-related prevention may help protect you and your loved ones.

Eat five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables a day, and augment your diet with a high-quality supplement like TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid. Providing over 100% of the recommended daily intake for B-12, B-6 and folic acid—and delivering these nutrients directly into your bloodstream—TriVita’s Sublingual B-12, B-6 & Folic Acid can help protect you and your loved ones from Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

Dementia, which is the most common cause of cognitive impairment, is defined as significant memory impairment and loss of intellectual functions. Symptoms include:

• Forgetfulness
• Difficulties with familiar activities
• Language problems
• Problems with spatial and temporal orientation
• Impaired capacity of judgment
• Problems with abstract thinking
• Leaving things behind
• Mood swings and behavioral changes
• Personality changes
• Loss of initiative
There’s no question that preservation of your cognitive abilities, well into old age, is essential to your overall health status. The good news is that nutrition-related behaviors may help you maintain an optimal quality of life—well into your future.

vascular dementia may be helped by drugs that increase the blood flow to the brain by increasing blood flow in general. I don't know of a food that will do that.  (+ info)

Vascular dementia and NHS continued care?

Does anyone have a relative with dementia that has managed to get Continued care funding from the NHS?
I should have said "since the new guide lines in October 2007". It seems to me that the criteria they now use is carefully worded to exclude any type of dementia!!
----------

Yes my parents did, for the Grandparents....
Their advice
Fill in the paperwork.. it takes time
Fill in the paperwork.. it takes time

I care for my wife, she has vascular dementia.?

She is not being treated for her diamentia. What can I do to help her?
----------

Chas1951,
Caused by blockages in the brain’s blood supply, vascular dementia is the second most common form of dementia and ranks behind Alzheimer’s disease. Vascular dementia is a degenerative cerebrovascular disease that leads to a progressive decline in memory and cognitive functioning. It occurs when the blood supply carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is interrupted by a blocked or diseased vascular system. Vascular dementia generally affects people between the ages of 60 and 75, and affects more men than women. However, unlike Alzheimer's, there are ways to prevent and reduce the severity of vascular dementia. Although there are claims that the symptoms of vascular dementia can be reduced in some cases, there is no known, scientifically documented way to restore the normal functioning of brain tissue due to stroke or TIAs. The good news is that further damage can be prevented. Medications may be taken that improve blood circulation to the brain and reduce the probability of future strokes. There are also different therapies such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy that help stimulate normal movement and speech patterns.

Vascular Dementia & Althimers! How long can someone?...........?

My friends wife has been diagnosed with the above and she is quite rapidly getting worse day by day! She is only 61! What is the outlook and is there a time limit of sorts as to how long she may have! Awful question I know but needed to ask it!
She is waiting to see if the specialist will issue the drugs for her!
----------

Sorry lady but I work 14 hours a day, 7 days a week, with people who have dementia and Alzheimers. 61 is young. I am so sorry. There is not an 'outlook' but if you can find a good home with caring people then you can't really ask for much more. Alzheimers can last for years, so be prepared. Find a good home, and check out the staff. I work in SE England, and I work my butt off to take very good care of Alzheimers patients. I wash them, dress them, feed them, and do activities with them, and love them ... Alzheimers does not discriminate. You can work in a factory, you can teach at a university, it can attack you. The care you get is so important. I work for Shaw Healthcare, who have homes all over the country, so check them out on the Net for further information. Good luck and bless you.  (+ info)
