Congenital means it was present at birth. It is not associated with aging, although it may be undetected until adulthood, depending on its severity.  (+ info)

In regards to a question I asked about congenital heart disease?

It was my Fathers brother who died when he was 3 hour old and heart disease was found at the post mortem. Would this mean it would dfinetly be hereditary
----------

The fact that your uncle died of a congenital heart problem when he was 3 hours old does not give us any information as to whether the problem is hereditary. However, if he was the only member of your family who has had congenital heart disease, then odds are that it was an isolated occurrence. Think about it, if it were a hereditary disease, someone else in your family would likely have had it too by now.  (+ info)

Hereditary diseases ....?

This is a difficult question but does anybody know of a hereditary disease which includes the following factors:-

1. It is a deteriorating disease to do with appearance;
2. More common to be passed on to girls than boys but can be passed onto boys;
3. A friend of mine's father managed to get away with it until his forties.

I know this is not much information and could be anything but I just wondered if anybody had any ideas. Many thanks.

The only disease that comes to mind with the information you have provided is scleroderma (sp?), where skin is actually changed to bone. Is there any more symptoms you could provide? Even the slightest symptom that may seem irrelevant? Could you elaborate on appearance? I would very much like to be of more help to you if possible. The only thing I am fairly sure of is that this disease sounds like it is "auto-immune", where ones body mistakenly attacks healthy cells.  (+ info)

What are the chances of one parent having congenital heart disease of passing it onto their children?

Hello,

My husband was born with congenital heart disease (tetralogy of fallot), he is however an otherwise healthy 25 year old with no history of heart disease in his family background. I am a fit and healthy 24 year old with no background of heart disease in my family. I would like to know what are the statistics/chances that our children would end up being born with congenital heart disease?

Are physical disabilities hereditary? Can they be passed down to my children?

I have a physically noticeable disability, which I've had since birth. Although it is noticeable, if I wear sunglasses I can easily cover it up. My left eye is completely blind, shut at all times and my eyebrows are a bit raised. To those with no prior knowledge, it could seem as if I'd been in a fight or a mild car accident. Nothing else on my body is affected.

I now find myself an expecting father and I am concerned about passing this disability on. Where can I find a source which deals with physical, as in affecting one's structural appearance, disabilities/defects. Most sites that I have found deal with hereditary issues such as diseases.
----------

Although the internet is a wonderful place to gather information, there is risk in self-diagnosis. This is especially true in situations where hereditary issues are of concern. For example, some forms of muscular dystrophy are x-linked, while others are recessive. This difference has tremendous impact on prediction of what will occur in future generations. Conversely, not all birth defects are hereditary, some are just plain congenital anomalies.

While pediatricians and OB/Gyns are good with the common hereditary disorders, most are unfamiliar with the rarer ones. My suggestion would be to consult an MD who is a boarded clinical geneticist.  (+ info)

How would you tell parents that thier child has a hereditary disease?

Hereditary or infectious disease. We have to present out information on the chosen disease by pretending to address the parents of the child who has this disease. How would you tell the parents? My chosen disease: Osteogenesis Imperfecta

I would just say it. Be honest. Find some material on it. I have never heard of this one. sorry and good luck. Give the facts.  (+ info)

What are some ways to prevent high blood pressure and heart disease if it is hereditary?

My mom and dad suffer from high blood pressure,high cholesterol. It run on both sides of the family,that along with diabetes and heart disease. My mom started taking blood pressure medication young,in her later 20's. My dad suffered from a stroke due to high blood pressure. I am 22yrs old and do not want to suffer this especially while young. Are there any ways I can be proactive about not suffering from those conditions now and later on in life being that it is hereditary? Or do I not have a chance in preventing it?
----------

Keep your weight down through diet and exercise. And don't have stress in your life. That is all you can do.

If the heart disease has been mostly in one form, then consider testing for it now while there are no symptoms. It might provide problems getting health insurance, but you will be able to take steps to limit future problems. And vote democrat to ease the future insurance coverage problem as republicans are against people with heart disease getting insurance.

If you have a heredity disease it will probably already be detectable. Some forms of cardiomyopathy will appear in the late teens. Many highschool athletes have died from it. How quickly it advances depends in part on your lifestyle.  (+ info)

Are chromosmal abnormalities hereditary?

Hello everyone. Please try to follow me on this one:

My husband's sister had a baby in June. The baby was diagnosed with Trisomy 4, a chromosomal abnormality. My sister-in-law is the carrier of the disorder.
Is it possible that my husband could carry it, too?
We already have a 2-year old daughter who is healthy. After getting this news, we are hesitant to having baby number 2 without more genetic tests. I guess I am asking if chromosomal abnormalities are passed to your children (which mean my sister-in-law got it from her mom, who could have passes it to my husband). Or, are chromosomal abnormalities individual?
----------

I think its something like a 1 in 4 chance you will have an affected baby if you carry a chromosomal abnormality. Obviously since you husband does not have the problem he carry at least one normal gene.

Gene abnormalities are hereditary and there is a possibility he could have the same copy of that chromosome.  (+ info)
