How long will a finger with a hairline fracture be swollen and numb?

A door slammed on my middle finger and the xray found a hairline fracture on the upper bone (no dislocation). I've been wearing a splint. However 12 days later my finger is just as swollen and and the fingertip just as numb as it was at the start, though the bruises are gone. How long until the numbness and swelling go away? Thanks.
----------

I had a hairline fracture on my little finger, the swelling started to go after about 2-3 weeks and the numbness was slightly longer at about 3-4 weeks, although complete finger movement was about 6 weeks all in all.  (+ info)

How long does it take for a stress fracture of the fibula to heal?

Or hairline fracture of the fibula. Where is this bone of the foot located? I know it has to be somewhere close to the ankle area.
----------

The fibula is not a foot bone, it is a long bone of the lower leg.

Stress fractures can take 4-6 weeks to heal completely, just as broken bones can. If this was received playing sports, it may take you even longer to get back playing again, because you will have to let it heal THEN start training to get back into shape.

Stay off of it as much as possible, and follow your Doctor's Advice  (+ info)

What happens with splintering bones in a skull fracture?

My niece has a depressed skull fracture from getting kicked by a horse almost two weeks ago and at her check up yesterday, they said there was splintering bone. Will the body absorb this or what happens?
----------

The body won't absorb the bone fragments. If it is splintering and breaking off the main fragment, the doctors may decide to do a surgical removal of the fragments. Bone chips etc in joints can catch and cause pain etc while walking, which isn't a big deal, but inside the skull you don't want the fragments to potentially damage anything or impede the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. I would think the nerves are too sensitive to allow bone splinters to flow around and land wherever they want for the rest of her life, but it will be up to her doctors for sure.  (+ info)

How long would it take for me to walk from an ankle fracture?

Recently, I had an ankle fracture( tiny fracture) from playing basketball. It has been 5 days since the incident. Surgery isn't necessary. I just need to wear an ace wrap.I have been using crutches to walk and treatments for my ankle. The treatments are just keeping my ankle elevated, applying ice on the swelling, and doing exercises.I am able to touch the floor now with two feet, but I am not able to walk. I just want to be able to walk before my college starts. I don't care if i can't run yet. Really would like to know an estimate on when to walk. Thank You.
----------

You should try to keep your weight off it for 6 weeks. You may find that it is better after 5 but 6 is the usual figure. You should find that you can move it slightly and gently moving it without any resistance can help prevent the muscles wasting but don't put any pressure on it.

Sorry if this wasn't the timescale you was hoping for.  (+ info)

How long does it take to heal a spiral fracture?

I'm 12 years old and was involved in a skiing accident. The doctors did an x-ray. They said i had a spiral fracture on my tibia and fibia bone and put a cast on my leg. I've been told to stay in bed for two weeks and keep a regular check up going back and forth to the orthopedic doctor. So my question is how long should it take for me to be able to start walking regularly again?
----------

Ouch. Spiral fractures are nasty. I'd have to guess at 8 to 12 weeks

Good luck  (+ info)

How long should a supposedly healed fracture hurt and disable a person?

I fractured my right wrist approximately 3 1/2 months ago and I still am in great deal of pain and have trouble using it. I cannot bend it either forward or backward. This was a simple fracture according to my doctor and I am relatively young.
It was a Colles fracture + a styloid fracture. Right now, it is in a brace prescribed the second orthropedic surgeon I've seen. My physical therapist sent me back to the surgeon after watching my wrist swell during therapy.

Wrist fractures can cause bone necrosis, joint fusion and arthritis. It really depends on the TYPE of fracture, of which there are many for the wrist. You should probably see an orthopedic surgeon (a second opinion if you already have seen one) to be sure you don't have a major complication. If not, physical therapy should be your best bet.

Added: Have recent x-rays been done? Colles and associated ulnar styloid fractures are common to take as long as a year to heal. Some say full function (or nearly full function) can take as long as two years. Most importantly, make sure the bones have actually healed. I would guess they have, but you have a lot of joint inflammation and may have also disrupted the ulnar ligament (which takes longer to heal). Be gentle with that wrist, don't push yourself too hard in PT until you have about 6 months behind you. Darvocet is nonsense, just occasional anti-inflammatories like Advil/Motrin/Aleve should be fine. You can add tylenol when it really bothers you.  (+ info)

How long will my daughter have to wear a cast after a salter fracture?

My 6 year old daughter has a suspected salter fracture. It didn't show up on the x-ray (which apparently isn't unusual), but the doctor thought that it was a fracture and put a cast on. When she goes to the specialist, if they still don't see anything, will she have to keep a cast on?
I forgot to mention that this is a grade 1 salter fracture to the ankle. didn't show up in the xray, and she was walking on it the next day (although she wasn't supposed to.)
----------

It depends on what bone it is, you didn't mention what she broke. There are 4 grades of Salter Harris fractures, but she will likely be in a cast for 4-6 weeks, if it's her wrist.  (+ info)

How do you know if you muscles are just sour or your stress fracture is not healed?

I returned to soccer after resting for 4 weeks and the muscles around the fracture are sour/tender. Is it sourness or a problem with the fracture?
----------

this is a good question and i also need to know. I also got injured 4 weeks ago. My bone is still not healed but im so sore around the muscles of my shoulder. I believe that not only did you break your bone, but you probably damaged or bruised your muslcles, tendons, and ligaments around the bone too. Best thing to do is see your orthopeadic doctor again and have him take an xray and an MRI around the fracture. Most doctors focus on the fracture and then once that is healed, then see if other stuff was damaged.

I know im really sore still in my shoulder (thats wehre my fracture is). Please keep me informed what you find out. This is a very good question.  (+ info)

What are exercises that will help me regain muscles lost after a humerus fracture?

4 months ago, I had a proximal humerus fracture on my left arm. I wore a sling for 2 months before being able to take it off. Now there is barely any muscle on it, when compared to my right arm because of the 2 months of inactivity.

What are some exercises that will help me regain muscles that I lost due to the humer fracture?
----------

Start using your left arm. Even try immobilizing your right arm to make the left one do more work. Exercises with a medicine ball would be good, also rowing machine, elliptical, swimming. It will take a while to build it up, like all summer, at least.  (+ info)
