How long does a stress fracture of the femoral head take to heal; is surgery needed?

I have a stress fracture of the femoral head. I have been told that people with this same condition have had to have surgery because it was not healing after months of rest and being on crutches. If anyone has had the surgery -How quickly did you recover? Are you as strong as you were before the surgery/injury?
----------

Yes if u ve already tried bed rest,it is better to get operated early, since there is always a risk of the head loosing its blood supply, but u ve to take the risk,if the operation is sucessful u will be fit as before.
PROVIDED u are between the 10 to 50 age group  (+ info)

is it normal to have a sharp pain in the wrist after a fracture and difficulties rotating my hand up and down?

It was a Colles fracture and a styloid fracture 4 months ago- went to PT and my strength is pretty much fully back now, there is just sharp pain on the outside of my wrist and can't turn my hand so that my palm is facing up like it used to
----------

No it isn't strictly normal but equally is something that does occaionally occur. You should go back and consult your doctor and ask for their advise as to the best route forwards. Possible repeat xrays or more physio or even acupuncture. Whatever you decide make sure you don't just sit it out, if I had done that i would have lost the use of my left arm!!!  (+ info)

It sounds to me like it differs for different people, otherwise, a lot of fractures are considered healed at 6-8 weeks.

How to know if the stress fracture is already on healing stage?

How will iknow if my stress fracture on my shin bone is already healing? I had it checked a while ago and the doc told me he can see a periostal reaction in my bone. I also told him that there is a lump on my shinbone. The pain while walking has already lessened and i am not limping anymore.
----------

Your signs are of improvement, so it should be getting better. If it stays the same or worsens you need to call your doctor right away. Otherwise, you should get another x-ray. I don't know how long it's been since the original injury. My shin bone had a lump on it for weeks before it finally went away.  (+ info)

What is the safest way to fracture my leg?

I am tired of running at P.E Class everyday. If i fracture my leg i wouldn't have to run no more.
----------

You are an idiot. Why the hell would you want to fracture your leg. You take gym to get into shape not to just bail out of it. But if you really don't want to do it, get your mom to write you a note, or right a note yourself and try to copy your mom's signature, dont fracture your leg you idiot  (+ info)

How can I prevent a stress fracture from reoccurring?

I got a stress fracture in my femur from running cross country. When I start running again, how can I prevent this from happening?
----------

It really depends on the severity and location of the fracture. Most typically, stress fractures require a rest from running for 4-6 weeks. I've got one that was bad enough to put me on crutches and take me out for 4 months!

When you do start again, be sure to start slow...run/walks. Jog a light pace for 1/4 mile, walk a 1/2 mile...this is really conservative, but just to give you idea.

You've got to really listen to your body...do not run until all sharp pains have subsided, when you can be up on your feet for an extended period of time without it hurting and you can walk prolonged distances without pain. When you do run, it pretty much should be painless...if not, you should go back to non impact activites such as biking.

High cushion socks such as Thorolo's level III will be helpful. Be sure to have the appropriate type of shoe for your foot. A reputable running store can typically help you out with this.

Finally, when resuming running, don't increase your distance/intensity by more than 10% per week. In other words, if you did 5 miles in one week, don't do more than 5.5 the next.  (+ info)

How long does it take for your tailbone to heal from a fracture?

My girlfriend is 40 years old and she slipped and fell at work and fractured her tailbone. She has been out of work for over three weeks. What is the normal amount of time that it takes for a fractured tailbone to heal? She suffered a hairline fracture.
----------

8wks for bone to heal, no rushing it;; things can "go wrong" to re-injure the area, usually takes 2-3 months to be "normal"...normal return time for an injury like this is no greater than 6 wks...  (+ info)

How long does it take for bone fracture to heal?

I had a bad fall on my right side on my driveway due to ice. I am afraid there might be some fracture inside my thigh. I can walk with a limp.
----------

An x-ray would help the worry there. Sorry mate. Only eyes can tell what's really happened.

If you slip on the ice again, an old injury could get worse too so I keep a thumb on the x-ray for you. Hopefully it's just bruised, but spend the x-ray and make sure.

Depending on how the fracture looks can an estimation be done.

Be careful

What is the average healing time for a fracture of the scaphoid bone in the wrist?

Does it make a difference that the fracture or "crack" as the doctor called it was especially faint on the x-ray taken 1.5 weeks after the injury?

It is not displaced and will get the cast off 6.5 weeks after the injury. Need another cast?
----------

The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured bone in the wrist, I fractured it myself a few years back. By the time your cast is off you will be well healed, in fact, I'm sure you will be healed before then. A lot of things depend on how well or fast it heals. Age is a big factor, the older you are, the longer it takes for bones to heal. That is something that you cannot control, but here is what you can:
Your diet - Stay away from foods high in sugar and basically just eat really nutritious foods that would be acceptable in any good diet.
Drink lots and lots of water and don't do anything with your broken arm that you know you shouldn't.
Rest up, you'll heal just fine. Don't over-work it when you get the cast off, but don't baby it either. You will want to get your full range of motion back, so stretching it is the best you can do once the cast comes off.
***But most importantly, follow the doctor's orders!  (+ info)
