Has anyone on here ever had Cholesteatoma?

I was wondering if you or anyone you know ever had cholesteatoma? I have had it twice now, just had a 3rd surgery for it. My question is to anyone that has had this, and had the surgery, were you dizzy the hole time after surgery? I had this surgery before and I don't remember being so dizzy that I have to grab hold of something to steady my self. It has been 4 days since my surgery and I have little pain, but alot of dizziness. I do go see the doctor later today, but want to know your opinion if you have had this.
To the person who answered, I ain't talking gallstones, I am talking about tumors that grow in your ear. Little bit different.

Just tell the operator to stop the ride you want to get off. So the air stops leaning to one side of your head. HA HA HA  (+ info)

Cholesteatoma, 5 years to live?

Someone I know (he's 5) has been diagnosed with cholesteatoma. The parents have been told right now they only have about 5 years life expectancy. They plan to operate but it is risky because it is far gone. He's had it since birth but it has only just been discovered. I've been tying to research it on the internet but all I can find is web pages on how it's not dangerous at all if spotted early. I can't find anything on when the disease is spotted when it's late on in develpoment. Can somebody find me a website that has info on it please? :'( I'm really gutted by the news and want to look into the disease a lot more.

Thanks :'(

At this age, this is a congenital cholesteatoma rather than an acquired one. They're usually diagnosed by the age of 5. I also don't know if this is an open or closed type. However, cholesteatomas are destructive and have a potential for causing central nervous system complications (brain abscess, meningitis) making it a potentially fatal lesion. Am I correct in thinking this particular tumor is in the child's skull base? You shouldn't have any trouble finding websites, there are 333,000 for cholesteatoma alone. And more than 60,000 for "advanced cholesteatoma". Complications are discussed.

Are some people more prone to developing cysts?

I have chronic ones in my ears (cholesteatoma), and have had about 20 others around my body in my 20 years of life.

WTF?
----------

Yes. Sometimes they go away by themselves but if they become painful then they should be removed. I've had a few on my feet. One I had surgically removed and it came back and the other I was going to have removed but I had accidentally dropped something on that foot and it went away on it's own.  (+ info)

what tests would u undergo before general anaesthesia ?

this ear operation is to remove Cholesteatoma. I want to make sure there is no problem with waking up successfully from general anaesthesia (which i understand is some risk always).

except tests, what steps r recommendable before undergoing a general anaesthesia?
----------

ah dont worry it's only a minor op, its very unlikely anything would kill u under general, iv been under so many times for tiny ops on my stomach and i dont even bleed or anything! i just feel sick :(
you'll be fine xx  (+ info)

Any doctors know about having 3 strange infections at once? Fungal, staph, attic cholesteatoma?

I am a seemingly healthy 31 year old female:

Had a fungal ear infection 2 years ago, which was 2 years after having tonsil, adenoids, and a tube put in my ear. The tube did not fall out, got a nasty fungal infection. Cleared it up. (Have always felt like my ears are too itchy.)
I had the swine flu and it kept me down for 3 weeks.
Now I just got treated for another fungal infection 3 weeks ago, cleared up, had to go to specialist after Terry Reilly tried to irrigate, which made me scream in pain.
Then had a Staph bladder infection, went a course on Bactrim, had blood in my urine after done with it, so just got done with Cipro for 7 days.
Went back to Specialist Sat morning, after strong ear pain and temple, jaw, and neck pain, he says attic cholesteatoma, will need surgury. My hands and feet are swelling a little which doesn't normally happen for so long, 3-4 weeks. No fever, it sits at 97 or so. Is there a possibility that this is all related?

Putting in your ear is an acceptable idea  (+ info)

How much will it cost?

I have a cholesteatoma and need to have it surgically removed. Anybody have an idea of a rough cost of this surgery?

You should address this question to the Physician or Surgeon who will do the Surgery. The office will inform you about the Fees, as well as how long it takes to schedulle the Surgery.  (+ info)

Any one ever have Cholesteatoma?

I was diagnosed with one a few weeks ago. (for those who aren't sure, it's a "tumor" in the ear canal, it can dissolve your ear bones and the thin bone leading to your brain, thus causing your brain to fall into your canal) I am 24 weeks pregnant, so they are going to wait to to the CT scan and surgery after i deliver. Anyone go through this??? I don't know what to expect...etc.
how is it scary afterwards? I already am almost 100% deaf in that ear, that's not that big of a deal. The specailist said I should actually be able to hear a little better. (i've had it for about15-18 years) No one has known what to do for me. My fam. dr. never sent me to a specialist until recently.

Well my aunt is a nurse and afterwards it'll be quite scary but usually it goes fine but sometimes you can go deaf but its not THAT likely to happen but its best not to worry more you worry worse it'll be!!!!  (+ info)

Is there any way of improving hearing loss caused by a cholesteatoma, either before or after surgery? ?

have been on waiting list for approx 3.5 years since diagnosis....any info about cholesteatomas would be great.
was called for the surgery twice since but due to circumstances was unable to make it. have a v. big perforation in eardrum and use earplugs in the shower. not sure what else to do wih it, the surgeon didnt elaborate much and im not exactly sure what questions i should be asking...hearing wasnt too bad since diagnosis, apparently the cholesteatoma itself was conducting the sound.in the last few days though my hearing has become less 'predictable' as in i cant improve it as easily or effectively as i used to be able to (using baby finger to induce a vacuum in my ear to suck out fluid, blocking my nose and 'exhaling' through ear, anything that changes the pressure in my ear usually helps). is this a bad sign?
----------

Sheesh... 3.5 years?? After that long, you have almost certainly caused permanent damage to your hearing... whether it be damage to your middle ear or inner ear is a different story. I'd suggest getting your hearing evaluated BEFORE the surgery and see how much it does improve. Cholestatomas are very erosive, so my guess is that you have caused permanent damage to your ossicles and may need reconstruction to regain hearing in that ear.

It really was a bad plan to wait though... wish someone would have told you that 3.5 years ago!!  (+ info)

What should I expect?

Tomorrow I am having an ear surgery to have my Mastoid Cholesteatoma removed( it's a skin cyst in the middle ear which becomes affected and erodes bone. It usually forms from chronic negavtive middle ear pressure which sucks the eardrum into the middle ear froming a retraction pocket.), and reconstruction to my eardrum area. I'm only 16 and don't know exactly what to expect afterwards. How long is the recovery? And what are the best things to do afterwards? And also, what should I expect? Anyone know or have been through this?

No but because its the ear it may be a bit painful. The ear affects a lot of things like balance and feeling dizzy and stuff like that so I would be careful and have someone aroud to make sure you are ok. Healing time usually depends on how you are if you are not healthy. If you are healthy I wouldn't worry too much because its normal to feel upset about any operation. Take care Heather  (+ info)
