what is the meaning of multifocal lens with respect to cataract surgery?

this is with reference to cataract surgery i would like to know regarding this multifocal lens used during cataract surgery merits and demerits. I would like to know the prices between normal and multifocal lens.
----------

the prices and merits are questions for your opthalmologust to answer but multifocal simply means that it will help with both far and near sightedness. One good reason to think of multifocal is because it is not as easy to replace as is a lens in the glasses. After cataract removal they place the lens inside the eye, good luck  (+ info)

what precautions should one take if he or she has cataract in his or her eyes?

My mother 63 years of age has recently been found with cataract in her eyes. She also has gollstones. Please let me know also which one is more urgent. It seems gollstones should be removed first. But my question is what precautions should be taken before cataract surgery?
----------

the gallstones are more bothersome and painful. i'd have the gallbladder surgery first.
over time the cataracts can diminish quality of life since its harder to see but they are not a medical emergancy. and take quite a while to develop so if she is not having a harder time seeing then nothing needs to be done.

there is not much you can do to prevent the cataracts from developing. (the only noteable thing that would make the cataract develop faster is is she is taking steroids for any reason) otherwise the cataracts develop fairly slow and over the course of a few years.
there are no real precautions she should take prior to the cataract removal other than making sure the doctor does a thorough examination of her eye to make sure there are no other complications.  (+ info)

Is there any method to arrest the growth of cataract?

I am 64 and my eye specialist told that cataract is just developing now and I have to wait till it grows.
----------

Vitamin C and Vitamin E
Get it from ur nearby pharma.

It will slow and may reverse the cataracts.
But I would suggest you to meet up with a doctor for the same.

What to expect after cataract surgery?

I'm sure that some of the people or grandparents of people on here have had cataract surgery. Were those surgeries successful? Were there any complications? Was the person able to see when the bandages were first taken off the day after?

The reason I'm asking this question is because I'm 16 and having cataract surgery in less than two weeks. My cataract developed due to severe eye trauma after a car accident, and right now I have close to no vision. I have slight vision in my peripherals, and I'm hoping that I'll be able to see the day after my surgery.
----------

Unfortunately, the general experience of most people who have had cataract surgery does not apply when there is a history of ocular trauma. Many people will say that cataract surgery "was a piece of cake," or that their vision was better before they even left the operating room. However, most of these people are at least 50 years old and do not have a history of trauma.

Both youth and a history of trauma increase the risk of surgery. Younger eyes tend to be at a higher risk of retinal detachment after surgery.

Ocular trauma can increase the risk of something going wrong during surgery as the surgeon really has no idea how stable the ocular structures are until s/he is "in the eye." Additionally, eyes with a history of trauma may be at higher risk of intraocular pressure spike (glaucoma), and macular edema (swelling of the retina). Treating these conditions can be challenging.

Even if the surgery is a "piece of cake," the final vision will depend on whether the trauma affected the cornea, optic nerve or retina. Corneal damage can often be addressed with a corneal transplant. However, significant optic nerve or retinal damage may not be treatable.

Essentially, ocular trauma is a bit of a wild card. Manage your expectations accordingly.

Sincerely,

If an eye that has already went through a cataract, is it good to perform a laser on that eye?

My dad has already gotten a cataract on his left eye and now his eye doctor all of sudden is asking him to perform a laser surgery for no reason, but the doctor claims its a preventative method. My dad is 44 years old and has type 2 diabetes. I felt it was unnecessary but I'm not a doctor so any thoughts on the subject would be great.
I'm pretty sure its a preventative method for diabetes retinopathy but I am unsure if there is a laser surgery to prevent diabetes retinopathy.

Cataract surgery how long does the pain last after surgery?

Please help..my step father had surgery on his eye....(cataract surgery) it has been over a week and he still feels pain in his eye...is this normal; how long does the pain usually last.

thank you for your help in this matter.
----------

i've had cataract surgery and the pain only lasted a couple days. you should call his doctor and havve him go get checked out. his eye pressure may have gone up to dangerous levels. this causes bad eye pain and needs to be treated quickly.
(i know this can happen cuz after one of my eye surgeries this happened and i now take eye drops to control it)  (+ info)

Are there fake contact lenses for cataract eyes?

I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a fake contact lens that has a fake iris on it that looks realistic, something that could be used for a cataract patient? I know there are contacts that one can use to change their eye color, but I think they only filter the light or something. I am talking about something for blind cataract eyes that only displays an iris so they can look normal. Is there such a thing?
Sorry you are right, I don't mean cataract, I mean the condition that makes the eyes all white.
----------

Yes, but I think you mean corneal opacity; cataract is not visible.

There are opaque coloured lenses with black pupils that are used for cosmetic improvement. CIBA makes one such lens. Your contact lens fitter should be able to find them for you.  (+ info)
