How do you know if a cat scratch needs stitches?

I got a cat scratch across my ribs and it ripped the skin open about 4 mm. Are there general guidelines for when stitches are necessary?
----------

you can get steri-strips at the drug store unless you think it's infected then visit the dr,they don't use stitches that much anymore even for surgery  (+ info)

How to get rid of a cat scratch on face?

Cat Scratch Scar on Face?
My cat scratched my two yr old daughter on the cheek back in January and it there is still a scar! We cleaned it well, and put neosporin on it and it is healed but it is scarred =( I feel terrible for my little girl I need to know what I can do to get rid of it or make it less noticeable. Its about 2 1/2 inches long.
----------

Aww. Well, over time it will probably fade, I wouldn't worry too much. And she probably doesn't care much at her age. But you might try rubbing a pure vitamin E oil on it or try some of that scar treatment like Mederma.

You can almost guarantee that won't be her last scar! :) That's what kids do.  (+ info)

Could i be allergic to neosporin I am putting on a cat scratch?

My cat scratched me pretty bad about a week ago, I cleaned it immediately and have been cleaning it and using peroxide/neosporin since. I noticed red itchy bumps around the scratch that seem to be worse when i use the neosporin? I've never had a problem using it in the past. Would betadine work better to help this heal? Are neosporin allergies common? Thanks!
Thanks guys. I had my dr. look at it just in case. Turns out I was having an allergic reaction to the cat scratch. Got some meds and it is looking a little better each day.
----------

Its possible that you can have an allergy to neosporin. Cats scratches and bites are bad to start with. There is something in the nails of their claws that our skins just doesn't agree with. Betadine would not be any better, in fact it actually inhibits healing. Soap and water has always worked. Since its been a week, keeping the wound moist with a topical antibiotic can also inhibit healing. Keep it dry and covered lightly. Hope this helps  (+ info)

Is it possible for me to have cat scratch fever?

My 6-month old cat scratched me pretty bad yesterday. I was trying to shew her off the table and she tripped and grabbed on to my arm on the way down.

Today, I was showering and I noticed I was very sore to the touch around my neck, shoulders, chest, etc. Lower body wasn't really that sore. I initially thought swollen lymph nodes. I thought I may be getting sick. I looked online just now for cat scratch fever symptoms and sure enough, swollen lymph nodes was one of them.

My question is, I was already looking at Yahoo! Answers and someone said it takes 6-8 WEEKS for someone to notice symptoms. I'm noticing them the day after.

Has anyone had cat scratch fever and is this something I need to go to the doctor for?
----------

First, let me tell you that cat-scratch fever is a myth. There is no such thing, usually it's a common infection that comes from any kind of bacteria your cat may have in her claws [probably feces or urine, since she uses a litter box] so just dump some hydrogen peroxide on it and cover it with a bandage. It seems like you have some medical background; most people don't even know where your lymph nodes are. If you are still tender tomorrow or develop any kind of fever [higher that 100 F] then go soo a doctor immediatly, he will prescribe an antibiotic such as penicillin. Tell him you were scratched by a cat and believe it had bacteria under it's claws.  (+ info)

Why do so many doctors think you must have convulsions to have cat scratch fever?

I've heard of many doctors who wouldn't test for cat scratch fever because the patient didn't have convulsions, yet when one person insisted on being tested, the results came back positive.
KickassAli: Its a basic blood test, and there's an antibiotic that gets rid of it :-)
----------

Have no idea--no one I know has ever looked for convulsions with cat scratch fever. However just because the antibody test is positive for cat scratch does not mean the disease is active--could represent immunity from a long ago exposure. Would need more specifics.  (+ info)

What should i do if i get scratched by my cat and what are the symptoms of cat scratch fever?

I was giving my cat a shower cause he smelled bad and I guess he got scared and climbed up the side of my back. after this i got severe puncture wounds in my chest (not that severe but it was bleeding pretty bad). there are also numerous but less severe scratching on my back. It doesn't hurt, but i was wondering if i could get cat scratch fever from this.
----------

You can get infected from your cat, but its not very likely. Cat scratch fever is not very common and its not much different than any other scratch or cut that gets infected. If you wash the scratches and cuts with soap and water, you probably won't have any problems. You could run on some antibiotic ointment as a precaution.  (+ info)

How do I heal a cat scratch on my face as fast as possible?

my cat scratched me on my face JUST under my eye. about 5cm long or so. i need it to heal as fast as possible, any ideas? thanks!
(if you dont know how to heal it quickly how about how to cover it up, keep in mind i dont wear makeup but i could try a bit of foudation over the scratch, but im worried its gonna infect it or something)
----------

Try to cover it with make-up. But of course, you should wait for it to dry first. (And I mean TOTALLY dry.)  (+ info)

How do you ease the pain of a cat scratch?

It's not a serious scratch that sends people to the doctor, but it hurts. It was done by an aggressive cat who doesn't get her nails clipped often.
----------

Cat scratches can be nasty, and painful because of the transmission of bacteria and worse. Keep it VERY clean and covered.  (+ info)

How To get Rid of a cat scratch on nose in a couple of days?

Ok so my cat was really upset about something, so when I tried to pick him up, he scratched me right in the middle of my nose! My school starts Monday, and it seems really embarrassing to have a huge scratch on my nose. I want it to heal fast, or at least be unnoticeable... any help?
----------

DO NOT PUT COVERUP ON THE SCRATCH. It gets dry and crusty. Get "Neosporin" and put it on twice a day. Once at night and once in the morning. Thats the best you can do. Teach your kitty whose boss! :D  (+ info)

is it possible for cat scratch fever papules to show up less than 24 hours after the scratch?

i was scratched by a kitten last night, and this morning i have a very small papule on my finger. is it possible for cat scratch fever to show up that soon? everywhere i have looked online tells me it takes atleast 3 days.
if i do have cat scratch fever, will i need medication to get over it, or will it be ok to just leave it?
thanks!
----------

You probably don't have cat scratch fever but a localized infection due to one or more of a variety of bacteria on your skin. It will probably go away on it's own. And there's no medication for cat scratch fever - that also will eventually go away on it's own.  (+ info)
