I have been diagnosed with 80 per cent blockage of the carotid artery in my left side of neck-?

Would this explain why I feel dreadful and no energy? The doc said it is too close to the brain for him to address- suggested a neurologist- anyone? Thanks!
----------

Have you called a neurologist? If not you should soon. Yes this can cause low energy, My father had blockage and didn't know and ended up having a massive stroke, in the mean time if you experience any lightheadedness, dizziness or slurred speech you need to get to the ER as soon as possible, Good luck to you, and God Bless.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of carotid artery blockage?

The symptoms depends on many factors like the degree of block, incomplete, partial, or complete. Then it will also depend on the alternate circulation channels inside the brain and their competency. As already answered by Dr. Pangolin, transient ischemic attacks (TIA) may bring the condition to be noticed. The carotid artery would feel thickened as the blockage is usually because atherosclerosis. Stroke may follow and disturbances in vision may also be manifested. However, certain small defects may arise in the brain because of the blockage (and thereby ischemia to small parts of the brain tissue) but may remain imperceptible due to negligible change or negligible symptoms. Memory deficits and other higher functions may also be altered in varying degrees due to ischemia, but are ignored being insignificant to start with.  (+ info)

Does the location of the carotid artery vary from person?

As in, could it be hidden deep below the skin for some while others have them closer to the skin.
----------

Yes, according to your weight and frame but it is the same with all veins and arteries. They are in the same place in everyone but may be deeper in some and closer to the skin in others.  (+ info)

My father is 80 yrs old. He has a carotid artery that a screening has shown to be 90% blocked. Surgery or No?

What are the risks? As well as the chances of a succesful surgery? Thanks so much.
----------

A lot depends on how healthy he is. I've seen 80 year olds that can run rings around some 50 year olds.

In the hands of an experienced vascular surgeon, the risks of stroke are around 2%.  (+ info)

What is the fatality rate of carotid artery bypass surgery?

I work with a high volume vascular surgery group. I can't recall a death from carotid surgery in 6 years.

The rate of stroke from the surgery is 3-4%, much less in experienced hands. That's actually LESS than with carotid stenting.  (+ info)

Accuracy of carotid artery ultrasound to detect heart problems?

I know this can help determine if the arteries in the heart are also clogged. Anyone know how accurate it is- thanks in advance
----------

Carotid Ultrasound is used to examine patients whom may have carotid artery disease. With the carotid ultrasound examination, the carotid artery is visualized and imaged by placing a small probe over each side of the neck; once at a time. The degree of stenosis in the carotid artery can be accurately measured with this technique. Carotid ultrasound shows whether a substance called plaque, has narrowed the carotid arteries. Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

Is it possible with carotid artery disease to get a heart attack? Not Directly, but definitely there are possibilities of a stroke and to some extend the plague is certaining piled up at other parts in the body as well.

Good Luck!  (+ info)

Why would a Cardiologist be able to detect a Mitral Valve Regurgitation in a patients' Carotid Artery?

Under what conditions could this happen?
----------

He/she doesn't. A murmur from MR wouldn't radiate there.  (+ info)

Brain damage from pressing on carotid artery (in the neck) ?

I put my finger on the carotid artery in the neck and applied some pressure, could this have damaged the brain by preventing the blood from getting to the brain? Does the brain prevent this kind of damage by making me faint if anything happens?

Please answer, worried sick
Thanks guys :)
----------

No, you're fine. Brain cells aren't damaged until they're oxygen-starved for four minutes or longer. If your brain hadn't been getting enough oxygen, you would have passed out.  (+ info)

Should an eighty-seven year old Alzheimer's patient have thoracic surgery to clear a blocked carotid artery?

My mom has alzheimer's. She had a small stroke yesterday called a TIA. At the emergency room we found out that her right carotid artery is significantly blocked which puts her at high risk for a stroke. Should she undergo surgery with its risks; infection, bleeding, stroke, and death? If the surgery is successful in removing the blockage it will lengthen her life and she will live with alzheimer's longer. Her quality of life as an alzheimer's patient is very poor to put it nicely. Can anyone help me with this ethical question?
----------

No. It isn't worth putting her through the surgery. Although not without its risks, a carotid endarterectomy is usually successful and done without major complicaitons which will just prolong the inevitable. If quality of life is as poor as you report there isn't much sense in going though with it.

So sorry you are going thought this.  (+ info)
