death rates and survival rates of Squamous cell carcinoma lung cancer?
My Dad was just diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in August. It is rising to the top as one of the most fast frowing cancers around. I know the doctors told my dad he had a very low chance about 40%. so far we are good but the doctor also said if the cancer comes back. We wont be winning anymore.

squamous cell carcinoma?
My Dad was diagnoised with Squamous Cell Carcinoma this week. I am confused. The Doctor said that this is not skin cancer but I thought that squamous was an epithelial cell? It's in a lymphnode on the ledt side of his neck. A small hard bump under the skin that has been there for year. He doesn't smoke or drink or is he in the sun much. He is already set up with chemo and radiation for next week. Can someone please clarify this for me.

Squamous cell is one of the most common forms of skin cancer and most aren't serious. I don't know if you are talking about an invasive cancer or a cancer in situ. Maybe the link below will help you.

Any squamous cell cancer located in the mouth, nose, throat, lung or tonsil is a difficult cancer to cure. Initial treatment is usually surgery followed by radiation. If the cancer has spread into the lymph nodes then the cancer's staging has advanced and the long term prognosis becomes guarded. Here are some web pages where you can read up on SCC of the tonsil.

My step father has been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma at age 49, what are the chances?
I've taken 2A&P classes and Patho. so far working towards my degree where I've had some study regarding this cancer. And none of what my textbook showed looks like what he's been diagnosed with!? He had no lesions on his body, nothing similar to skin cancer. Just had a swollen 'gland' on his neck, we thought was linked to a cavity. Dentis put him on antibiotics, treated the cavity, and it didn't go away. Went to Dr., scheduled removal/biopsy. Dr. removed 3 lymph nodes, said came back as SCC. Immediately had tonsillectomy/adenoidectomy to find primary. Were negative. Had roof of mouth/tongue biopsy. Tongue tested positive. Has now began radiation and Chemo. Is very nausious of course from the chemo as to be expected. Refused feeding tube, and is doing fine eating sensibly. He is 49, never smoked a cigarette in his life, and is alcohol and drug free. What is the expected outcome/survival rate for this type of cancer? I'm trying to do more research to decipher the 'sugar coating from Dr's

Without more staging info only general ideas can be given. This is typically a cancer found in smokers and drinkers. Does your stepfather work in an environment where fumes might be present? printer, chemical or paint plant? work with herbicides or pesticides? These might be some other potential causes for his cancer but you probably will not find an obvious cause-effect reason why he contracted this cancer. SCC of the tongue is a tough cancer to treat once it reaches the lymph nodes. It sounds like his Drs are doing all the right things. Be there for your step father and your mom as the coming months are going to be very difficult on the entire family. Read the web page below for more info.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma measures 1.5 inches x 2 inches. Will removal require skin graft?
I recently had a squamous cell carcinoma in situ removed but not all cells were gotten. The incision has agrivated the cancer. The current size is approximately 1.5 inches by 2.5 inches...I do not know the conversion to metrics. Will the doc be able to remove this with an incision again or will in likely require a skin graft?
My GP referred me to a plastic surgeon because he did not want to remove something that large...the 1.5x2.5 does not include any margins. My appointment with the PS is tomorrow, but I'm nervous and want some info tonight if possible. The original site only appeared 5 weeks ago and is growing faster than any my GP has ever seen.

The carcinoma is on the upper right quadrant of my back. The measurements are surface measurements that I was able to get with a ruler. The previous diagnosis was in situ but that was 3 weeks ago when all of the visible surface was removed...the new measurement is the growth that replaced the original that was removed.

Is one of those measurements the depth? Where is it-face, arm, etc? If one of those is the depth it may not fill in all the way and need some type of plastic surgery.
I would say you will need a graft. Another piece of advice for you is to keep this area as clean as possible so you don't develop an infection. An infection would, of course, mess up the healing process and possibly make scarring worse. (

Squamous cell carcinoma?
Last month I went to my doctor for pains in the back of my throat and neck after noticing that my right tonsil was swollen and there was a red, flat ulcer with raised edges about the size of a pinhead on it.
She tested me for mono and strep which were negative and gave me a zpack for infection. The pain eventually went away but it comes back from time to time and my right cheek and jaw get tingly sometimes.
4 weeks later, I looked again today and saw that the ulcer had gone from the size of a pinhead to the size of a small button, like on a dress shirt. It does not hurt to the touch, but the rest of my tonsil looks fairly bad and is still enlarged, protruding out from the back and upwards toward the uvula (which is shifted toward the other tonsil slightly).
My medical problems started when I noticed a lump in my neck on the right side which turned out to be a firm lymph node in October. It is still firm.
Antibiotics have done nothing and I'm having pressure in my neck when swallowing, pain in my neck, and this growing ulcer that is painless. I have heard that ulcers on the tonsil that don't heal within 10 days or at most 3 weeks are the most common sign of squamous cell carcinoma.
Could this be something else that will go away soon or should I go back to my doctor?

If you have a firm enlarged node in your neck that has persisted despite antibiotics, and have an ulcerative lesion on tonsil as well, I would go see an ENT (ear/nose/throat) specialist who can properly diagnose the problem. I have seen many patients put on multiple rounds of antibiotics, only sdelaying the diagnosis of a head & neck cancer.
