Burning mouth syndrome?

I think I might have burning mouth syndrome. In the last month whenever I'll be eating some random food and after i finish my mouth will start burning like it is scalded, on my tongue, roof of my mouth, cheeks, gums and sometimes my teeth. It seems like water or cold drinks make this happen more often. My doctor said he thinks it might by acid reflux so he prescribed me Prilosec. I dont think its acid reflux because my mouth will start to ache sometimes before i swallow my food. I also thought i had Mouth Thrush but i know it cant be that because i dont have any sores in my mouth at all. Has anyone had this? Is this actually burning mouth syndrome or something else? Any help would be appreciated please.

I'm assuming you are fairly young to be on this forum. Unfortunately neither your age nor symptoms seem to fit this syndrome - that is not to say you don't have it, but it seems unlikely.
I attach a link to the most recent article I could find, and a Cochrane Collaboration review of all available studies.
I really have no idea what is your problem, but can only suggest maybe a referral to an ENT specialist or an Oral Biologist as your next step.
Good luck.  (+ info)

Has anyone had "Burning mouth syndrome"?

I have been suffering from an unknown mouth complaint for over 2 years I have just seen a reference to this on another question.
Looked it up on the web-it looks like no cure. Any suggestions?

I have glossopharyngeal neuralgia. It is caused by damage to the 9th cranial nerve and it gives me a very sharp pain in my ear and a feeling in my throat like it has been cut. It is part of my brainstem demyelination condition which my neurologist tells me is progressive for me.

Of course in other people damage to cranial nerves can be reversible if a tumour has caused it - it get removed.   (+ info)

I have the burning mouth syndrome. Please HELP!?

About 4 months now, I have the burning mouth syndrome after an extraction of my lower wisdom tooth. I suffer from anxiety disorder and from that point on, I supposed that my mind subconsciously totally focused on my mouth and thus day by day I developed this awful sensation. I am on medication about 3 weeks now and there has been an improvement, but I still suffer. I dread the idea that I might be like that forever! Will it go away? How much does it take in general?
Only serious answers please. Personal experience would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi...I have the same thing!! I'm really going crazy with this problem. I've asked my regular doctor and an oral surgeon and they both said they had never heard of it and made me feel like I was making it up or something. I've tried several herbal remedies but so far nothing has worked. Just wanted to let you know...It's a real thing!  (+ info)

I have burning mouth syndrome now for 5 years.Dental work brought it back again.?

I have been on a drug called clonazepam for 5 years for this problem. In the beginning I took a small dosage.025 and it did the trick. I had more dental work and it flarred up again.Had to increase the dosage to .050. More dental work 3 weeks ago and it has flarred up so bad,that3 mg isn't helping much.HELP
----------

You being on such a hefty dose of clonazepam makes me realize how hard and painful this is for you. In regards to the treament and diagnosis of your burning mouth syndrome, have you had it diagnosed by a second opinion doctor? I ask because it may be a fungal infection that has flared up. Or it could be a case of erosive lichen planus. Either way there is treatment that involves steroid therapy and/or antifungals.

Dental treatment sometimes involves drying the mouth out considerably. When this happens your nerve endings could get the sensation of a stressful episode and so they begin to fire off, causing you pain. Go see about a 100% second or third doctor opinion so that maybe they can treat your disease and just not the symptoms. There are oral rinses that contain an anesthetic that may help you, rincinol is what comes to mind. I've given this to a patient of mine who had some Burning mouth symptoms that she said helped her quite a bit.  (+ info)
