What are the best over the counter medicines to beat Bronchitis?

My dad gave me his bronchitis. I need to ease the symptoms as quick as possible because my college graduation is next weekend and i would like to enjoy myself without worry about hacking all over the place. Any suggestions for medicine or other ways to treat it? Thanks!
----------

chrissy, my doctor turned me into a serious fan of Mucinex-D and hydration, enough that your urine is almost colorless. Between the two, the crud in your lungs (or sinuses, or whatever) is thinned enough that your cough actually gets it out of your body and you breathe easy.

If you take it at the recommended dose daily, you should be pretty much over the bronchitis by graduation.

Oh, and congratulations!  (+ info)

How do I get bronchitis gone by Thursday?

I have been coughing and thinking I might have bronchitis. I am going on vacation on Friday so how do I get it to go away by Thursday?
----------

Antibiotics don't effectively treat most cases of bronchitis because the condition usually results from a viral infection. Instead, the following are the cornerstones of acute bronchitis treatment:

* Get plenty of rest.
* Drink extra liquids.
* Take a nonprescription cough medicine.

It's best not to suppress a cough that brings up mucus, however, because coughing helps remove irritants from your lungs and air passages. If your cough is keeping you awake at night, use just enough cough medicine so that you can rest, but not enough to suppress your cough completely. There are several kinds of over-the-counter (OTC) cough medicines. Read their labels to figure out which is most likely to relieve the type of cough you have. If your cough is preventing you from sleeping, your doctor may recommend a prescription cough suppressant.

Your doctor may prescribe an antibiotic if he or she suspects that you have a bacterial infection. If you have a chronic lung disorder or if you smoke, your doctor may also prescribe antibiotics to reduce your risk of a serious, secondary infection.

If you have asthma, your doctor may recommend an inhaler and other asthma medications to reduce inflammation and open narrowed passages in your lungs.  (+ info)

How do you know if bronchitis is turning into walking pneumonia?

A week ago I was told I had bronchitis. I was having coughing fits and a tight chest. Was put on an antibiotic (Levaquin) and 2 different cough medicines.

However, every day I feel weaker and weaker when I come home. Starting to feel as if I have a fever and aches. Feel as if there are a ton of flat weights sitting on my chest - hurts right in the middle of my breast bones and then right under. Back hurts too. But I'm not coughing anything up. The coughs have diminished - only happens a little, but my chest is still killing me. Stomach is also starting to hurt.

Is it getting worse and turning into walking pneumonia?
----------

If you've had the bronchitis a week and have been able to sleep and been not feeling this weight and pain in your chest something new might have developed, like you suspect.

Does the feeling of the weight make you scared to lie down, or is it extra hard to breath when you try to lay down? If so, you are probably being alarmed by the possible fluid in your lungs spreading out when you try to lay flat.

If not maybe it could be that all the coughing has really worn out your body to the point where the muscles are aching. To be sure you should probably see a doctor if things feel worse, or you're unable to sleep or function normally.  (+ info)

Whats the difference between chronic bronchitis and emphysema?

I am doing an essay on the Lungs and bronchitis and I came across a website that says " Chronic Obstructive Pulmanory Disease" Refers to 2 lung diseases Chronic Bronchitis and emphysema which is obstruction to the airflow. I know about bronchitis, but I was wondering if there is a difference between the two. thanks
thanks for the info everyone, im having a look at the pdf now. it looks really good by the way cheers

Perhaps Bronchitis can be cured? I should think so. Anything with 'itis' at the end means an inflammation of, i think. Emphysema is, eventually, fatal.  (+ info)

Best way to fight off acute bronchitis caused by a virus?

I haven't been getting nearly enough sleep lately, because of school, but I've also been having a hard time keeping up at uni because of bronchitis... I have been taking antibiotics but they haven't helped, just finished them. I know lots of rest is key but does anyone have any tips for getting rid of it more quickly?
----------

Warm chicken broth contains enzymes to promote recovery and the moist steam loosens secretions when breathed in. Get some sleep, and have plenty of chicken soup.  (+ info)

Whats the difference between asthma and bronchitis?

I have asthma, but lately I have experience burning of the chest, chills, chest pains, shortness of breath and a hack. I am use to wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath. I went to the doctor and she gave me an asthma treatment and this medicine called predisnone. It helped a little, but now my chest is burning. I also had a temperature of 99. Are asthma and bronchitis related?
----------

Asthma is inflammation and constriction of the lower airways. Bronchitis is inflammation of the upper airway. In my years in the medical field, I have noticed that people with asthma are more prone to getting bronchitis than those whom do not have asthma.

With bronchitis, you usually cough up a lot of phlegm.

A temp of 99 is not really considered a temp. Most hospitals don't consider it a critical temp until it is 103 or 104. I usually don't give meds to my kids until it is 101 or 102. So 99 is not bad.

Now...asthma meds are known to cause heart burn or indigestion. So that is very possible what you have. The symptoms sound just like it. Are you belching a lot? If so,is there a foul odor with your belch?

I hope this helped. Message me, if you need more info. I will be super busy this weekend so I may not be on Yahoo Answers much but I will be checking my email.  (+ info)

Are Benadryl Allergy dissolving strips safe to use while having bronchitis?

On the box, it says to consult a doctor before use if you have chronic bronchitis. Okay- what if you have acute bronchitis, though? What will happen if you take it anyway?
----------

Absolutely, just double check with a pharmacist to make sure that your other meds don't contain any similar antihistamines.  (+ info)

Is it possible to have pneumonia or bronchitis without a fever or having a cold/flu first?

Is it possible for a person who is in their twenties to get pneumonia or bronchitis without a fever? And do these always develop from a cold/flu only? Everyone who has had pneumonia or bronchitis that I know has had a pre-occurring cold or flu and had a fever. So if someone has all the symptoms of either do they have to have a fever and have had a recent sickness to be diagnosed or is it possible to be healthy one day and come down with pneumonia or bronchitis the next day, seemingly out of nowhere?

It is called...death.  (+ info)

How do you get rid of acute bronchitis?

I have had acute bronchitis for about four months and the doctor has given me a couple of different antibiotics. Has anyone had this and how did you get rid of it?
----------

Your Doctor sucks.

In the short term use something like Mucinex to mitigate the problem.

Ask for a short, about 4 day stint of steroids. That will bolster your ability to fight off the congestion. Well that's what My Doctor did and it worked. Anti-biotics are useless.  (+ info)

Which machine is best for allergies and bronchitis a dehumidifier or air purifier?

Anyone with allergies, asthma or bronchitis out there? Which machine do you find better to treat the air with a dehumidifier or an air purifier?
Which one do you have/or have tried?
----------

Humidifiers and air purifiers serve two very different purposes. The humidifier will increase the moisture in the air and relieve symptoms like coughing, dry nose and sometimes headaches. A "dehumidifier" does the opposite, it takes humidity out of the air and will help with reducing the source for mold, but generally does not affect allergy or bronchitis symptoms.

Air purifiers clean the air of toxins, odors, dust and other irritants that cause flair ups in asthma and allergy sufferers. If you are looking for the best value for your money, take a look at the Sun Pure SP-20C at http://www.allergy-relief-air-purifier.com/air_purifiers_for_asthma.html. This is the most effective stand alone air purifier on the market. When you compare the features and effectiveness of the Sun Pure SP-20C with others, you won't find another machine that comes close. Over 3,000 asthma and allergy sufferers can't be wrong.  (+ info)
