bronchiolitis?

my daughter is 16months old and had rsv this last winter. she was born early with slightly premature lungs.. she got over rsv in like a week and has been a fine, happy healthy girl. well, took her to the doc today, and she has bronchiolitis! she has the nastiest snot (sorry) and is coughing and is on two inhalers and zithromax for the infection its caused. I guess my question is, is something she will just have to grow out of since shes more susceptible to this kind of stuff? and what are the best ways to help her be comfy and get well?
----------

My daughter had this too a couple of times when under 2 years of age. I am including a link for you with some detailed information. Good luck to you both.

Has anyone had experience with Bronchiolitis in infants?

My 3 month old has Bronchiolitis and is on 3 different meds now. The Dr said a humidifier would help, but which kind is better: Cool Mist or Warm Steam? The Dr also said this could lead to asthma, especially since my husband had it when he was younger. Any advice?
----------

Both of my children had bronchiolitis as infants.

My oldest is now 3 years old, but developed a chronic cough at 10 months. She was diagnosed mulitple times with bronchiolitis and given oral steroids and steroid inhalers. We eventually demanded a referral to a pediatrician who tested her for everything you can think of. Everything came back negative, thankfully. The ped kept insisting that she was not asthmatic and it was "just a virus'. At 14 months, we demanded a referal to a second pediatrician who immediately diagnosed and treated her with asthma. She was better within one month. She is now 3 and has been off of her meds for about 3 months and doing great. She still gets a bad cough when she gets a cold but seems to be through the worst of it, so far.

My youngest just turned one year and had bronciolitis in both lungs at Chrstimas time. She was hospitalized for one night and on antibiotics as well as two inhalers (flovent (a steroid inhaler) and ventolin). She took about two weeks to recover but was fine after. The doctor told us that when babies have bronchiolitis or pneumonia or other severe lung problems they can have asthma-like symptoms for a couple of years after the episode.

Asthma is hereditary. If the mother has asthma (I had severe asthma as a child/adolescent) the children have a 75% chance of developing asthma. If the father has asthma the children have a 50% chance of developing asthma.

Our ped at emerg told us to keep her room cool and prop the head of her crib up.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Can someone explain the action of Imuran on the disease called Bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia?

My mother is taking Imuran for BOOP and I know it has to do with suppression of cell mediated immunity. what exactly is this?
----------

Although the exact mechanism of how Imuran works is not known, it is felt that by inhibiting the immune system, this drug suppresses the "overactive" immune reaction that is responsible for such disorders as your mother's.

Medicinenet has a really informative article on the drug here:

Here is also a great article on BOOP and the role of Imuran:

My son has bronchiolitis, how to ease it for him?

I just went to the doctors yesterday and they told me my 9 month old has bronchiolitis, all they gave me a cough suppressant and I can't even tell if it's working. He has coughing fits, but what really sucks is that every time I feed him his formula he starts gagging, it takes him like 30 min. to finish a 6 oz bottle. Is there anything that I can do to help him?
----------

try a cool mist humidifier in his room while hes sleeping.

my son has a really bad cough. no other symptoms other than a cough and we were given an inhaler and told to use a humidifier.

it will probably take a few days for the medication you were given to work.

not a lot you can do with a young baby.  (+ info)

My daughter has Bronchiolitis and i have questions?

i took the baby to the doctor and the doctor only gave the baby an asthma pump, the same pump i use and i'm grown. i personally feel that the pump is too strong for my 6 month old daughter who isnt asthmatic. i woud like to know how i can help my daughter get all the congestion out. i will continue to give the pump to my baby if i see she is having trouble breathing but that isnt helping with the congestion. Do any of you yahoo users have any advice or something to help me out over here. please and thank you.

A humidifier would work or go into the bathroom, shut the door, hold your baby in the room while running the shower on hot, the steam might help your sweet bundle of joy. Good luck to you, I wish you the best.  (+ info)

is it okay to shower with bronchiolitis?

i have bronchiolitis and i was wondering is it okay to shower with this?
----------

Let me educate EUROPE1 in a jiffy ...

There are several causes of bronchiolitis in the adult, infections are probably the most common cause of bronchiolitis, and include such agents as parainfluenza type 1, 2, and 3; mycoplasma pneumoniae and adenoviruses. Uncommon infectious agents would include mumps, varicella zoster virus, influenza A and B, rhinoviruses, and rarely the enteroviruses. Protozoal bronchiolitis due to Encephalitozoon hellem has been reported in a patient with HIV infection .

Now to your question ... sure it is fine to shower ... and may actually help mobilize secretions ....  (+ info)

Has anyone experienced bronchiolitis with an infant?

I'va already put a call in to our pediatrician but my 5 month old doesn't want to eat that much. He is not lethargic and is playing quite well. He is on C-Phen drops and was prescribed a nebulizer. I'm just wondering if anyone that has gone through this with their child has noticed a lack of appetite in their little one.
----------

He will be fine my son has been through this many time. Just try feeding him more often in smaller amounts till he will take a whole bottle.  (+ info)

My 4 month old has been in hospital the last 2 days with Bronchiolitis.?

He has been sent home and the Doctors at the Hospital say they can not do anything for him to help in any way.

I was just wondering if there is anything i can do for him at home to help him get better quicker?
They were going to keep him in if he need Oxygen but he does not need it so they sent him home with me.
----------

hi, my daughter caught bronchiolitis from the hospital when she was 2 months old, and is still recovering from it. she has had chest problems ever since. she is now 1 year. the best thing to do is by a vapouriser to put in his room, and that helps them to breathe easier at night, as well as helping declog the airways. it takes time to recover from bronchiolitis, but hopefully your son will make a full recovering shortly.  (+ info)

how do you cope if your infant has bronchiolitis and is nursed in a tank with drip feed and oxygen tubes?

how is the baby's need for affection / touch met?
how will the baby be soothed if she cries?
what are complications of bronchiolitis?
----------

Babies in special care baby units and hooked up to tubes can, hopefully, still be touched, if not held, throught the side of the incubator. I've no experience of a baby being drip feed but my eldest son was premature and had to be fed via a tube through his nose to his stomach for the first couple of weeks of his life. Bronchitis is a severve chest infection which, in adults, aside from causing breathing difficulties also produces phlegm which is coughed up. So, although I don't know what complications that would produce in an infant, I image that getting rid of that phlegm would be one of them.
Hope the infant improves soon :-) But at least she is in the best place receiving appropriate medical care. Try to stay positive and I hope you have her home soon.  (+ info)
