Does anyone know of any blogs or support groupgs for family of a person sufferering from dementia?

My father is suffers from dementia. Lately things are getting worse. My mother is dying of COPD and Bronchiectasis and this seems to have made things worse. He has begun imagining things that have not happened. It is really rough taking care of them and I could really use a group of people who I can talk to. Does anyone know of a blog site that I could be part of?

The following is a very supportive series of articles...

"Caregiving--Meeting the Challenge" :
- The Challenge of Caregiving
- How to Deal With Feelings
- Caring for the Caregiver--How Others Can Help*

...and the last one* might be used in asking for help.
By printing it out, & giving it to the one/s you need help from (other family members, friends, or maybe even neighbors), along with a hint (or better) of what is needed, it may make it easier to get the support that you need. (Alternatively--if people visit, you can leave it on a table in full view of those walking through the room...)

is bronchiectasis a serious illness?

a friend of mine has been diagnosed with this disease...i have googled this and read up on it,but on some sites its sounds horrendous and others seem to suggest it nothing to serious...i would love to hear from people with this condition and hear what they have to say

Hi Mr. M,

Bronchiectasis is usually caused by a bacterial infection. The trachea or windpipe divides into tow separate pipes and one enters each lung These are called the bronchi. These then divide further and form bronchioles which is there the exchange of gasses takes place.

In bronchiecttasis, it is the bronchi which become inflamed. This causes a build up of sputum and secretions which makes breathing difficult.

it is treated initially with long term antibiotics and physio to clear the secretions. Inhalations can also be helpful.

It is serious in that it is a debilitating illness but it is not life threatening, unless of course complications arise which is very rare.

I hope this answers your question.

Bronchitis/Bronchiectasis?

i am seeing a consultant who thinks i may have bronchitis or bronchiectasis, still doing the tests, in the mean time i was looking for some remedial cures for my symptoms, sputum with no cough first thing in morning

i bought some mullein from a very reputable herbal shop but it did nothing, not even a tingle, i followed the dosage instructions correctly.Bronchial drainage does not work.i had some antibiotics which were an absolute nightmare but worked for about 5 months.

anybody know of any other Mullein based products or other similar products that might be more effective, maybe a slightly stronger dose?

Is this more of BRONCHIECTASIS or LUNG FIBROSIS?(please read the HRCT scan report)?

HRCT
There is cystic bronchiectasis involving both lower lobes, adjacent to the oblique fissures and the pericardium.

Associated fibrotic changes are noted.
There are also fibrotic changes in the left upper lobe.
A cavity measuring approximately 20 mm is noted in the right upper lobe.
Mosaic perfusion is seen throughout the lung fields.
The right ventricle is markedly enlarged and the central pulmonary, plus proximal main stem braches are prominent.

Comment
Cystic bronchiectasis, with extent as described.
Additional fibrotic lung changes
Pulmonary hypertension
Some doctors are saying that the symptoms of my freind aree more those of lung fibrosis than bronchiectasis.
He resonds well to a high dose of prednisolone.20 mg once daily. With this dose he doesnt cough or produce mucus.

Hi. Sorry to hear about your friend. How old is he? How long has he been ill? What have the doctors said about specific diagnosis? Prognosis?

I am a nurse, not a doctor, and I have no experience (other than life) in interpretting CT results. That said, I have a daughter with interstitial lung disease, so life has dealt me more than my fair chance at attempting to make sense of such results. My daughter's most recent CT describes early bronchiectasis, cysts, ground glass opacities (that are improving), and fibrosis. She is only 3 years old (almost 4), and with steroids (including prednisolone) has come from full life support with very little hope at survival to the point of being a fairly normal little girl who just gets sick (and hospitalized) more than the average kid and has to use oxygen at night to breathe. Otherwise, you could not pick her out of a crowd of other children her age. Thankfully, she does not show any signs of pulmonary hypertension at this time.

From what I understand, in my daughter's case anyway, the bronchiectasis is probably a secondary finding to the interstitial lung disease. The ILD causes the fibrosis. The chronic low oxygen levels in the blood cause pulmonary hypertension. And from there, it is just a vicious cycle.

Have they attempted to identify what type of lung disease he has? Long term prognosis will depend heavily on type of disease (and also steroid response), even in adults. Diagnosis may require lung biopsy (my daughter had one at 3 weeks old). Has your friend seen a pulmonologist? If not, I reccomend he get one ASAP.

Best of luck.  (+ info)

what is bronchiectasis,oophorectomy,ovarian cysts?

Uhhh.. a lot of different things there.

Bronchiectasis is a gradual destruction of the airway due to chronic inflammation and infection, often due to cystic fibrosis, which is a hereditary disease characterized by a buildup of thick mucus in the airway and lungs that promotes life threatening infections.

An oophorectomy is a surgical removal of one or both of a woman's ovaries, usually required either because of cancer or some other physical abnormality (ectopic pregnancy, for instance, where a fertilized ova implants in the wall of the fallopian tubes instead of in the uterus)  (+ info)

Help with diagnosing bronchiectasis/Young's Syndrome.?

I have a patient scenario where bronchiectasis is suspected. Which of these choices would confirm the diagnosis:

1) Sweat chloride test
2) Measurement of serum quantitative IgA levels
3) Sputum culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis
4) Measurement of Scl-70 and anticentromere antibody levels.

Based on the rest of info we got about the patient's histroy, my partner and I believe it's Young Syndrome. But these choices don't seem to confirm it, but only rule other things out like cystic fibrosis, congenital causes, and an acquired infection. Thanks for any advice or opinions!

Is bronchiectasis curable?

Bronchiectasis (not to be confused with bronchitis) is not usually curable.
Treatment of bronchiectasis is aimed at controlling infections and bronchial secretions, relieving airway obstruction, and preventing complications. This includes fighting infections with antibiotics and eliminating the fluid with postural drainage and chest physiotherapy.[citation needed] Surgery may also be used to treat localized bronchiectasis.

An encouraging new treatment, Bronchitol[2], is under development and in phase III trials and appears to offer a chemical treatment of Bronchiectasis. Mucus gets a lower viscosity and cilia are stimulated to work as they would in healthy lungs. Trials end in Q2 2007 and Pharmaxis (the manufacturer) estimates the drug will be on the market in 2008. Bronchitol has Orphan drug status in Europe and the USA.
Hope this hepls. sorry for the bad news!  (+ info)
