pseudomonas and bronchiectasis?

My mother has both and uses antibiotics and has physiotherapy to clear her chest. Does anyone know of anything else which could improve her life expectancy? Any natural remedies or anything that may help her as her chest is now really bad.

Thanks.

In addition to the antibiotics and chest physiotherapy she needs to stay hydrated, 6-8 glasses of water every day (unless she is on fluid restriction for another condition) and do everything her pulmonologist tells her to do. Bronchiectasis from pseudomonas is usually amenable to antibiotics. The problem is that the essential problem doesn't go away and can become reinfected. If she smokes or is exposed to any air that has irritants in it like mold, paint fumes and the like, she must stop. An air purifier will help in whatever room she's in. Personally I have one in every room and it has helped me. Also, make sure any equipment she has for treatments or humidifiers are spotlessly clean and kept clean. Clean them with a mild bleach solution every other day. This is a common source of pseudomonas. Her environment and everything that she uses must be clean. A dusty house is very bad for her.
Most likely, she will resist change in her routine but it is essential for her health.
Make sure she eats a balanced diet and takes a multivitamin.

God bless her and you for caring. I'll keep you in my prayers.  (+ info)

Bronchiectasis: can you tell me anything about this lung disorder?

"When the bronchial tubes get damaged, they can no longer clean themselves and the mucus accumulates in the tubes, spilling over to adjacent tubes. These tubes are then prone to infection by bacteria causing inflammation which leads to damage called 'bronchiectasis.'"

How can bronchiectasis be cured?

Broncioectasis is managed by:

1.Pharmacologic Treatment -- Medicines like Mucolytics and expectorants to loosen and thin out excessive phlegm. Antibiotics for recurrent infection -- broncioectasis is a result of frequent infection of the bronchi and trachea. Bronchodilators to relax the bronchi muscles and give the patient ease of breathing.

2. Hydration - to facilitate expectoration of phleghm... lack of water in the body can make the phlegm sticky and thick - which is more difficult to cough out.

3. Oxygen therapy -- to aid those patients with difficulty of breathing... frequent in patients with Bronchiectasis.

4. Chest Physiotherapy -- to facilitate expectoration of phlegm. It helps the patient's lungs to cope with the changes brought about by the disease. Expansion of lungs -- and compliance... breathing exercises. A trained chest physiotherapist performs this.

5. Surgery is the last resort... if items 1 to 4 don't work.

** the patient should have proper nutrition, adequate ventilation, clean environment etc.  (+ info)

Bronchiectasis hubby diagnosed with this disease..Read up about it but how can I help with his quality of life

My son gets this couple times year. He has undersize lugs. Besides no exposure to smokers watch for dust, pollen, spray cans, car exausts, and changes of temperture. When in discomfort Use heat pad 10 minuents front and on back, make bed propped up at head some with more pillows or blocks under top frame. Warm foods such as soups, drinks. My son likes heated warm DR Pepper with lemon. If prescibe a puffer keep it handy at all time and only use prescribed when needed as they are adictive. My son has good then bad times. Hope your husband does better soon. *mamatx  (+ info)
