are their any diseases or physical problems with the brain that could cause this?

a 25 year old male that personality has been changing over the last 6 months...becoming more and more withdrawn, having a hard time connecting ideas and sentences. erratic behavior..hard time controlling impulses..depression, alcohol abuse...detatchment from reality, wandering..lack of hygiene, changes in eating habits..weight loss..loss of self awareness. this person is going to see a specialist..i'm just wondering if there is something that could cause this that is not so much chemical but would show up on an MRI...once it started it's been getting progressively worse and worse. thank you.

All alcohol/drug use, is symptomatic of a deep rooted psychological problem, usually occurring in childhood. If one must drink to be social, well you draw your own conclusions.
What is been described in the question, is typical symptoms of alcoholism. Chemical imbalance in brain is a side effect of methanol in the blood stream.
You say he is seeing a "specialist", if so that person should be aware of the above. If so they will recommend treatment which is appropriate. (This I would think include de-toxic, re-hab and AA)  (+ info)

Can kids under 13 have neurodegenerative diseases or other things beside brain tumors that cause memory loss?

There aren't much symtoms but this person has been complaining about for 3 months. he says that when he thinks of something, it is easy for him forget it a short time afterwards.
----------

Yes. There are various genetic conditions, autoimmune disorders, infections, psychological diorders, and other conditions that could cause neurological symptoms, including memory loss. Some are directly related to the central nervous systom; others cause neurological symptoms indirectly. Memory loss could also occur as a result of insuffient sleep, poor nutrition, or even as a side effect of certain medications. Some potential causes may be lethal, others could be as simple as a course of antibiotics or a vitamin suppliment, and most are somewhere in between. It's also possible that everything is totally normal, and it's just that he thinks he's supposed to remember more than he actually is.

A child experiencing memory loss, or any other neurological symptoms, should definitely see a doctor. It may be no big deal, or even 'just a phase,' but it could be a sign of any number of serious medical conditions, and it's not something that should just be ignored. Websites like Yahoo! Answers are not a substitute for evaluation by a qualified medical professional, and should not be considered an alternative to seeing a doctor.  (+ info)

need help please. Does anyone know any brain diseases that cannot be traced or found with MRI or CT scans?

My fiance's dad is in a long term hospital and he is bedridden and cannot move. They are saying that he is brain dead but he is responsive so that is not the case. The hospital has done nothing but made him worse. We are in the process of moving him to another hospital. He had seizures after he was put in and we think he had a stroke before hand they have tried alot of tests including MRIs, CT scans, spinal taps and a bunch of different types of biospys and they cannot find out what is wrong. somebody please answer. we are desperate for suggestions
it was brought on gradually. First he couldn't walk. Then he got really bad sick. he would not eat and he would have bowel movements. he would just vomit. then they thought it was his gallbladder so they took it out and sent him home but it just got worse after that. he did not know who any of us where and he started coming up with outrageous stories/hallucinations. then he could not talk at all and he can only show his alertness by moving his hands a little and looking at you.

Hmm...there are a lot of things that might be going wrong and are hard to detect. Some types of brain tumors won´t show up in CT scans or MRIs.
I had an aunt who died of brain cancer. She was feeling ill quite some time before, but nobody could find anything wrong. It was until she went to have her thyroid checked, that the doctors realized there was a tumor on her brain stem, right behind her thyroid gland.
I suppose the best thing to do is attacking the incognito from different points.
Do a whole head AND neck MRI.
Find an Infectuous Disease Specialist,
a Neurologist and an Internist and let them work together.
Try to get in contact with the DANA Foundation and see if they can help, too.
Sorry you have to go through this but keep in mind doctors are not infallible, and sometimes they need our help, too.  (+ info)

Epilepsy, there are many different types of Epilepsy or seizure disorders. When nerve cells in the brain fire electrical impulses at a rate of up to four times higher than normal, this causes a sort of electrical storm in the brain, known as a seizure. A pattern of repeated seizures is referred to as epilepsy. Known causes include head injuries, brain tumors, lead poisoning, maldevelopment of the brain, genetic and infectious illnesses. But in fully half of cases, no cause can be found. Medication controls seizures for the majority of patients.

Is biopsy the ultimately best diagnostic test for brain tumor? How much is it in the Philippines?

We know that the signs and symptoms that we see in the internet are not inclusive and are pretty vague because they might be caused by other diseases...

Biopsy diagnostic test sounds pretty expensive, so I'm seeking help from those who have experience with brain tumors, biopsies, etc... I would really appreciate your time and effort!

Whoa, hold on a minute there!!!
I have had a brain tumor, deadly lethal kind too!
MRI scans are the definitive tool for diagnosing a brain tumor. Sometimes a CAT scan can be helpful, but generally the brain doctor will want several MRI scans with the help of an injection. The injection makes the images more clear and distinct.

A biopsy is is resection sample, in other words they have already drilled a hole in your head to get to the biopsy test. No, no, brain tumors are found and analyzed by neurosurgeons based on contrast given size and location, density. Then a pathologist will take a look. A pathologist is a good type of doctor, they tell doctors and patients what is likely to be effected. For example cancer of the testicles where by removal of the testicles will leave a patient sterile. That is pathology. Surgeons are experts at removal, the are body repairmen.

Incidentally, you are talking about signs and symptoms and you end up with a brain tumor. This very very wrong, for example I had signs and symptoms, but they were not related to my brain tumor. The tumor finding was incidental after I demanded my doctor conduct a full head scan. See, the tumor I had was called a colloid cyst of the third ventricle. Look it up, you will see how scary such a thing really is. So extremely rare, even among brain surgeons.

Anyway the location of my tumor was a tell tale sign that it was not cancer. The doctors pretty much knew in my case based on location. Third ventricle colloid cysts, are benign, in every case ever found. However they once large enough they secretly kill their victims in several minutes.

I hope this helped, I sympathize with you on finding treatments for your ailments. I went for about two years without answers for my health problems. Thank God, my general practitioner allowed me to ask for a head scan, just to be safe.

By the way my tumor was in the middle of my head, before recent technology was invented the surgery was generally as bad as the eventual tumor killing me. The biopsy was just a side thing, something they did after they removed the tumor to varify that material was harmless, i.e. not cancer.  (+ info)
