Are people infected with a botulism toxin immune to a second infection with same toxin type?

If I'm infected with botulinum toxin A, survive it and become healthy again, and later am infected with the same type of botulinum, will I be immune to it automatically?
----------

No - pretty sure you're cooked either way. It isn't a bug which infects you with botulism - the Clostridium botulinum crawls around on a lot of stuff - but only when it's closed in where there's a lot less oxygen, it then proliferates - and it releases a really bad nerve toxin.

And it will kill you very dead - but if you do live through it, it will kill you very dead each and every time you run into it in the future. You don't get used to a toxin like that! I suppose that's what makes it attractive as a weapon.

Didn't Bush have botulism toxin sent to the democrats at the Capitol after 9/11?  (+ info)

Does cooking honey remove the potential for botulism?

If a recipe calls for honey and it is cooked, can I give that to my 9 month old or just not risk it?
----------

no, it doesn't. I accidentally fed my then-9-month-old some [cooked] granola that I'd bought and I read -- after he'd had some -- that there was honey in the ingredients. stupid health food, trying not to add too much sugar...

anyways, I looked it up after that incident and cooking and preparing the food doesn't kill the botulism spores. honey nut cheerios, prepared foods with honey in them, and food you bake yourself with honey as an ingredient are all "not safe." it's best to wait until a year! :)  (+ info)

How is foodborne botulism diagnosed?

What are the tests used to diagnose foodborne botulism. Also, how would you describe this disease?
----------

I am not sure about what tests they do, but I am sure that they take samples from the body.
Botulism is a very dangerous form of food poisoning and it causes paralysis, similar to polio. Most people who get botulism die from the disease as it can paralyse the muscles used for breathing.
You can avoid botulism by checking canned foods for dents and if you see any cans in the supermarket with dents, make sure that an assistant immediately disposes of the can.  (+ info)

Will using Fresh Onion while canning cause botulism?

I'm canning salsa and every recipe I've used calls for onion. I'm using a hot water bath and my grandmother says that if I use the onion it will cause botulism and it is a deadly toxin.
Can anyone help me clear this up?
----------

This is what I found specifically about canning salsa, and not just general knowledge of canning safety...which is what I believe your are asking. Quote" Most salsa recipes contain a mixture of low-acid foods, such as onions and chiles. Acid, such as vinegar or lemon juice must be added to prevent the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, from growing. This bacteria produces a deadly toxin that can cause serious damage to the central nervous system or death when eaten in even small amounts." See link. Hope that helps you.  (+ info)

What would happen if you ate a can of botulism?

If you ate canned food full of botulism, you would probably puke your guts up, then die, if not treated immediately.

By the way, Botulism is caused by the same type of bacteria injected into people's faces when they get Botox!!! Gross, huh? It works because the bacteria paralyzes your muscles so they can't move, therefore they can't wrinkle. Who's bright idea was that to inject deadly toxins into your face for the sake of vanity?  (+ info)

what is the liklihood of getting botulism from honey?

I was reading that botulism is the number one cause of botulism and you shouldn't give it to kids under one. So I have been using honey a lot lately cooking and stuff and its unpasteurized, so I was wondering how common is it for honey to contain the toxin that causes botulism I mean can it really be that common cause they sell honey in regular grocery stores. Anyone have any info on this. Thnx
----------

As far as I understand, it's fine for folks over 1, but the immune system of babies under 1 can't fight off the little bit that might be in honey. So, I'd say it's fine for you.  (+ info)
