Simple question about leukemia and blood platelet, white blood cells etc?

A patient with leukemia is being treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The patient is found to have a low blood platelet count and a high percentage of the white blood cells are abnormal.
Which is this patient’s symptoms?

The answer is: Disease Resistance - Low, Blood Clotting - Low, Oxygen Transport: normal

I picked: Disease Resistance - High(since there are a lot of white blood cells), Blood Clotting - Low(Since there is low platelet count), Oxygen Transport - High

Why am I wrong? Why is the answer right?
----------

"high percentage of the white blood cells are ABNORMAL"

Even though the white blood cell count is high, almost all of the white blood cells are malformed or immature and not doing their jobs.  (+ info)

Can you help me with a question about blood disorders?

My cousin was born Thursday. It wasn't known until she was born that she had Down Syndrome. She was doing very well, but all of a sudden her white blood cell number is at 1,000. The drugs that they gave her to boost them worked at first, but now they are not. They have begun a new drug, which they are giving a few days to work, but if it doesnt work they said that there will be nothing else that they can do. They said they can't give her a bone marrow transplant. She is scheduled for a CAT scan in the morning as well, because suddenly today she has a large "knot" on the back of her head. My aunt was thinking possibly she had leukemia, but wouldn't her blood cells be extremely high, rather than extremely low? If anyone knows or has experienced something similar with their newborn I would appreciate some thoughts. Thank You.

please see the light blue box on the right side of page 1 of this document. it basicly says that some infants-due to downs syndrome being a genetic disorder-can develop a transient form of leukemia shortly after birth. it is definitely not sickle cell anemia because that would be indicative from a low red blood cell count.  (+ info)

went for blood work before having 8 year olds tonsiles removed results showed high platelet count?

i took my 8 year old daughter for her blood work before she was to have her tonsiles out monday the doctor called and said they would have to postpone the surgery because of a very high blood platelete count. she said to take her to her family doctor immediatly, which isnt until monday. i have to worry all weekend.Has anyone had this problem .
----------

There are many different causes of a high platelet count, some of which are quite serious. I don't want to speculate because I don't know her history or the significant family history, but it's important that you keep the appointment and discuss all of the options with your daughter's doctor.
I'm sure there will be a simple explanation for it all and that she will be fine. God bless, I hope that her impending surgery goes well.  (+ info)

My blood test results for a platelet function test was 535. What does that mean?

Bleeding brusing are the only symptoms but the anestheiosologist oreded the test before a hernia surgery.
----------

There are a bunch of platelet function tests that measure different parts of the clotting mechanism. Without knowing what kind of test was done, the number is meaningless.

I have given you a link that describes the different kinds of platelet function tests.  (+ info)

What do they have to do when you get a blood transfusion for low platelet counts?

im about to go get one im only twleve and im really scared?
could i die
why do they have to admit me in the hospital?
----------

First of all, don't be scared~ you're being admitted to the hospital for your safety, not because you're dying. Platelets are the main component in your blood that helps your blood to clot. Because your platelet count is low right now, it is in your best interest that you be watched closely so that injuries are prevented and medical attention is immediately available to you.
A transfusion of Packed Red Blood Cells is done very simply through an IV in your arm. First you'll have some fluid infused, then the PRBCs, then some fluid. The PRBCs have to infuse slowly. After you've received your transfusion your blood will have to be retested to see your body's response to the transfusion.  (+ info)

I just got blood work back that said I have a low platelet count and an enlarged liver.?

Doctor is putting me on Vitamin D pills. Any idea what would cause these symptoms? Informed answers please.
----------

When the liver enlarges in size, it is common
for the spleen to enlarge, also.

Each organ has many cells. It is the cells that
do the functions that each organ needs done.
If the cells become damaged, our immune
systems will respond to this and cause
inflammation to develop. Usually, the
inflammation is beneficial to help the body
prevent anything foreign from entering
any further into our bodies and causing more
harm. However, now it only becomes more
serious in nature and not a help. The
inflammation develops inside the liver
and causes the liver to enlarge in size,
even though it is surrounded by a membrane
capsule.

Damage to the liver cells can be caused
by different things: alcohol consumption
medication toxification, chemical exposure,
biliary obstruction/malformation/infection,
viral infections such as Hepatitis A,B,C,etc,
fatty liver disease, hereditary conditions,
metabolic disorders, cardiac problems,
and others.

If the cause of the cell damage is found
and stopped and the inflammation is
treated...then the liver cells may repair
and live. However, if this doesn't take
place it can lead to death of the liver cells
and scar tissue formation in the liver.
The scar tissue blocks the flow of blood
through the liver and also to the liver cells.
This is then known as Cirrhosis of the liver
which is irreversable.

When the blood isn't able to flow well
through the liver, it can back up into the
spleen and cause the spleen to enlarge
also. If the spleen becomes this way,
it will hold onto the cells going through
it, like the platelets. The doctor will
sometimes place a patient on Prednisone,
which is a steriod, to try to raise the platelet
levels in the blood. He may also request
that a bone marrow biopsy be done...if
he believes the marrow isn't making enough
platelets. Since no one blood test is
100% accurate...he may just do more
blood testing to see how the platelet
counts fluctuates and whether it goes back
to normal range or even lower.
Platelet are small cells that are the first
to help plug up any openings in the body
that needs healing. They signal the immune
system for the factors, that the liver makes,
to cause the blood to clot and stop the bleeding.
If the liver cells become damaged, the factors
to do this job... will decline and the patient will
start to bleed and bruise more easily.

You definitely need to find the cause of
your liver problem and see if it can be
stopped and treated. You should
be with either a gastroenterologist or
hepatologist.

Mostly doctors give Calcium and vitamin D
together. This helps the bones. Patients
usually do not get enough sunlight....in
liver disease, it is easy to become
deficient in this and some drugs, they
may place you on, may have an effect the bones.
Your calcium level may be in the okay range and
you just need this vitamin.

I hope this information is of some help to
you.  (+ info)

What causes high platelet count (525 or so) and low white blood cell count (don’t know the number)?

I have a high platelet count and low WBC count. Any ideas?
----------

Usually if one type of cell count is high, another is low, since the proportions of both cell types in the blood sample change if there is a change in either cell type. In your case, the white blood cells may appear low simply because the blood volume that would normally contain more white blood cells is occupied by platelets. If your white blood cell count is just slightly below normal, then its a safe bet that the aberration is due to the platelet count.

High platelet counts often occur without any apparent reason (called essential thrombocythemia), but they can also occur from conditions like polycythemia vera or myelogenous leukemia - docs often check for signs of these other possible causes after finding a high platelet count. Your platelet count is only moderately high, and it may not be much of a concern, particularly if you have had high platelet counts in the past, and you have no clotting problems. With elevated platelets, doctors often advise patients to maintain a small dosage of aspirin to reduce clotting, but this isn't necessary if your clotting time has been checked and found to be normal.  (+ info)
