Is there a blood meter which measures platelet count?

If so, where can it be purchased?
----------

There isn't a blood meter, but any doctor can order a blood test. This is the only way to have the correct platelet count done too with the right cause and right cure if there is one. Usually a cure is effective if the correct numbers are used. There are many types of platelet causes on both white and red blood cells. This is why all the right numbers and info needs to be used. Your doctor is the only one that can do this because they know everything from all the medications to all ( if any ) medical disorders you have. Please do this the only right way to do it so you know your count. Good luck and God Bless  (+ info)

Is it possible to diagnose certain mental disorders through a blood test?

If so which ones?
----------

No, you cannot diagnose any mental disorder through a blood test. There are tests that can pick up levels of neurotransmitters in urine samples, but that can't diagnose a mental disorder either, it can only detect whether there are high or low levels of certain transmitters in the body.

Often times blood tests are used to rule out physical conditions that can mimic depression and anxiety like thyroid or adrenal problems. By ruling out a physical cause for depressive and anxious symptoms (like hypothyroidism or adrenal insufficiency) a doctor can make a more accurate diagnosis of a mental disorder, but it isn't an actual diagnosis, only a tool to aid diagnosis.

Diagnosis of a mental disorder is made through an extensive interview with the patient, during which they describe their symptoms as specifically as possible. Family history is also looked at, and sometimes surveys are used for both the patient and their family members if they are willing to have their family involved.

Diagnosing a mental illness is highly subjective and it's not uncommon for different doctors to come to different conclusions, especially with difficult to diagnose disorders like bipolar disorder. Since there's no "gold star" method of diagnosis (like a blood test), misdiagnosis is unfortunately not uncommon. If someone feels that the diagnosis they have been given doesn't fit, they should seek a second opinion.

Hope that helps!  (+ info)

Birth Control for low blood platelet count-for the ladies.?

My girlfriend and I are getting married, and she has issues with low blood platelet counts, and is on low doses of prednisone. Any suggestions as to what kind of birth control we should use as far as the pill or something? Obviously condoms, but what else?
----------

This is something for her to see her doctor about so they can determine what type of hormonal birth control is best for her due to her conditon. Sorry I don't know which one that may be. I don't think prednisone affects how birth control works, but I think this can happen the other way around, so she needs to see her doctor.

if i have high count of platelet in the blood, should I donate platelet?

would i be doing a good thing for myself and other people? or only people with normal count can donate?
----------

here's how it works:

when you arrive to donate platelets, you are screened. this process will vary by state, county, city, etc. at the very least, you'll be asked some questions to make sure you're eligible to donate. your blood pressure and temperature will be taken, and then a staff person will prick your finger. this blood sample will be used to test you for hiv, west nile, and to measure your counts.

healthy people should have platelet counts around 150 or higher. there is no top level; i've been as high as 350. the higher your counts are, the more you can donate (1, 2, or 3 units, which are about 250 ccs each), and the quicker it will be. this also depends on variables like your size (i have high counts and weigh about 195 pounds, so i can give 3 units in about 1 hr 15 mins).

donating platelets is one of the best things you can do. you get hooked up to a centrifuge for about an hour and your blood is already separated. it's much more useful to people who need transfusions than whole blood, which needs to be separated before use.  (+ info)

PLATELET

PLATELET is an important factor for life and produced in bone-morrow of body and responsible to blood clotting, Normal low limit is 1 lack below this not normal,
many diseases reduces the level, like DENGUE,
Medicines used in Chemotherapy may cause reduction of its count, but soon gets its normal value automatically
platelet transfusion is also done , I don't think 60,00 is so bad, it should recover in a few weeks  (+ info)

What diseases/disorders, besides leukimia and anemia, can you have when your white blood cell count is low?

Please help! My Grandma has a low WBC count and they say it is not anemia, and it is likely to be much worse than leukimia. She had bone marrow drawn today, so it will be a week or two before we know anything. I hope this does not offened anyone but if you would please keep her in your prayers, that would mean the world to me. That's really all we can do while we wait.
I don't see how she could have an STD b/c she has been married for 45 years. I have never seen any two people so in love. I really dont think it is possible.
----------

I'll keep her in my prayers.

Low white cell count never equals leukemia! That would be abnormal cell reproduction and it would not take a bloody bone marrow biopsy to diagnose - just a simple blood test will suffice.

Myelosuppression - a decrease in the production of blood cells, which may lead to low blood count.
Pancytopenia - a lowering of all three types of blood cells; red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells, which may lead to low red blood cell count, low blood platlet count, and/or low white blood cell count.
Anemia - a decrease in the number of red blood cells (RBC), which may lead to low red blood count. [not what your grandma has]
Thrombocytopenia - a decrease in the number of platelets (PLT), which may lead to low blood platlet count.
Leukopenia - a decrease in the total number of white blood cells (WBC), which may lead to low white blood cell count.
Neutropenia - a decrease in the number of neutrophils, one type of white blood cell, which may lead to low white blood cell count.
Granulocytopenia - a decrease in the number of granulocytes, the group of white blood cells that include neutrophils, basophils and eosinophils, which may lead to low white blood cell count.  (+ info)

What illnessess or disorders make it necessary for you to have constant blood transfusions? Poryphia? Anemia?

I'd like something that also means they'll be pale and ultra-sensitive to light.
Sorry. I've heard of a few but rare cases where a person will have something wrong, a disorder, I believe that makes their blood count low...or something like that, so they are constantly needing to replace the blood. Like an IV full of blood once a week... If this thing does exist what is it called? And what other symptoms come with it.?

If I have a 2.6 White Blood Cell count and a 55 Platelet count how worried should I be?

Are these danger low numbers?
----------

Normal range for WBC is 4.3-10.8.
Normal range for Platelets is 150,000 - 350,000.
Do you mean 55,000 platelets or literally 55?
The results are certainly concerning, I think you should talk this over with your doctor.  (+ info)
