How can I tell if there is bile in vomit?

My teenage brother as thrown up a few times in the last 24 hours and we know theres blood in it but theres something else in it too. Its not food, the vomit doesnt smell and our mum thinks its bile...
How can we tell? And should we worry?
----------

The quickest answer I can safely give is go to the ER IMMEDIATELY. Blood in vomit is NOT a good sign and that alone can cause many other problems including infections, or also be a sign of ulcers or other problems. Vomit can be odorless, because it is normally a combination of acid from the stomach and processed foods. I cannot answer if it is bile, but the blood being there is a serious, if not fatal sign.

Go to the ER or Clinic ASAP!  (+ info)

Are there other ways you can release bile besides throwing it up?

Like, not surgery or stuff. Can you remove bile by going to the bathroom and taking a dump?
----------

Bile is released into the intestines all the time by the gall bladder where it is concentrated and stored, it is one of the pigments that make your stool brown. Bile release is controlled by the body in response to dietary needs, it helps in digestion,. If there is a blockage in the ducts that carry the bile out of the liver a yellowish tint in the skin may occur. I know of no way this can be helped except by medical or surgical intervention. There is to my knowledge no way to consciously release bile.  (+ info)

How do I help someone who is throwing up bile?

My brother is throwing up bile. He hasn't been drinking, he is just really sick. Is there any type of medicine he can take? Or anything he should/shouldnt do?
----------

Go to the doctor straight away. Since August this year, I've been throwing up bile. Its a horrible feeling and it can damage the lining of the oesophagus greatly. I've been to the doctor three times.

The first time the doctor said it was a chest infection and gave me antibiotics. The antibiotics got rid of my fever and vomiting, but not the cough and bile.

The second time he said go for a chest xray and then he changed his mind and instead just put me on extra strong antibiotics (called Augmentin Duo, if that helps. They're really good, next to steriods, and work very well - except for me, because I'm an extreme case).

The THIRD time he said get an xray, he gave me steroids and now I'm being tested for asthma. It's especially embarrasing when I have to leave class to "cough-up". Make sure he's not swallowing the phlegm (bile) because this could lead to vomitting (which also damages the linging of the oesophagus). Get him to blow his nose very often because this can be an alternative to coughing and gets rid of the excess bile. If this is prolonged, seriously he must go to a doctor.

Really, do try to help your brother. I wish someone had tried to help me....=(  (+ info)

What does it mean when you throw up yellow bile from a lite night of drinking?

I drank a couple of margaritas and then the next morning I felt terrible and threw up but all I threw up was yellow bile, I had eaten a lot of food the past night. I think something might be wrong with my liver or something because the same thing happend when i only took two shots of tequila. Can my body not handle liquor?
----------

Throwing up bile isn't good. After that there is just blood and that's even worse. Sounds like you needed more to eat, of you could have had a bacteria or viral stomach infection.  (+ info)

Whats the difference between laryngopharyngeal reflux and acid reflux?

And do the PPI's such as nexium and other prescription ppi's work to help laryngopharyngeal reflux? because i know once off it for acid reflux it creates "Acid rebound" BUT does it do the same for laryngophryngeal reflux?
----------

There are two sphincter muscles in the esophagus - lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and the upper esophageal sphincter (UES). If the lower esophageal sphincter does not function properly, there is a back flow of stomach acid into the esophagus. 2 or more times a week can be classed as gastroesophageal reflux disease - GERD. If the upper esophageal sphincter doesn't function properly, stomach acid that has back flowed into the esophagus is allowed into the throat and voice box - Laryngopharyngeal Reflux - LPR.

Unlike all the medical profession saying there is a fault with the esophageal sphincter, and many unnessary surgeries are performed to "correct" this problem, the fact is most people suffering from these conditions just have LOW stomach acid/lack of digestive enzymes in the diet. Acid blockers do not cure GERD, LPR or acid reflux. They should not be taken for more than 14 days, 8 weeks at the most.

My mother had both GERD and LPR for 5 years. Throwing away the acid blocker nexium, and starting digestive enzyme supplements, both GERD and LPR were gone in a few weeks (after trial and error of different digestive enzymes) and she continues to take them with each meal to help digestion. A simple digestive enzyme supplement that helps digest the food and increase stomach acid is all that is needed in most cases. Other causes of acid reflux include hiatus hernia, H Pylori bacteria (cured with antibiotics), obesity, pregnancy, asthma, diabetes (caused by low stomach acid) or hypothyroidism (caused by low stomach acid).

25 years of gastritis, 25 years of acid blockers! 80% better in 7 months already with digestive enzymes.

Mother suffered for 5 years with GERD and LPR....cured within a few weeks with alternative medicine....priceless :)

What does it mean to have sluggish bile?

The doctor told me I might have sluggish bile. I have to get another blood test next week to see if my bile level is fluctuating. What could it mean if it is? And what does bile level indicate? Is sluggish bile conducive to chronic constipation?

It is also know as cholestasis. Cholestasis is a condition where bile cannot flow from the liver to the duodenum.  (+ info)

What are the symptoms of acid reflux and How can you tell if you have it?

Lately my throat has felt like its burning and acid-y. It also feels like I have to burp after I eat. Are these symptoms of acid reflux?
----------

Patients with acid reflux often report suffering from nausea. In fact, nausea as a result of acid reflux is so common that when a patient experiences nausea with no apparent cause, a doctor usually suspects acid reflux as the culprit.

Equally as common as nausea occurring from acid reflux is regurgitation. Regurgitation occurs when refluxed liquid actually backs up into the mouth. Sometimes, this liquid can contain food. When a patient regurgitates, they often experience a burning sensation as refluxed liquid and food bypass the UES (upper esophageal sphincter) and make their way into the mouth. This burning is often accompanied by an awful, acidic taste. If a patient continues to experience regurgitation, it can actually cause damage to their teeth as the acidic substance erodes the enamel that encases each tooth.

Probably the most common reported complaint of acid reflux patients is the presence of heartburn. This is usually characterized as a searing pain in the chest. It can either begin in your upper abdomen or actually travel up to your neck. For some patients, this can be a cause for alarm. In fact, many people have mistaken painful acid reflux for a heart attack. Heartburn is especially prevalent after eating meals. Although heartburn usually goes away, the bad news is that it is usually a lifelong problem that will eventually return.

Hope this helps...

Who else has suffered from acid reflux during pregnancy? How to prevent the pain?

Hi, im 33 weeks pregnant and constantly getting a burning sensation in my throat. I find the more water I drink the worse it gets. Although when I eat a banana or drink a glass of milk it helps decrease the pain. Some people say it's only because the baby is growing alot of hair, and that's why you get heart burn and the acid. Is that true?
What else prevents acid reflux or eases the pain?
----------

i feel for you honey because mine is pretty bad most of the time to.i looked up some tips that have seemed to help me some when it's been really bad. 1st off the best thing i have found is when it hits to warm a glass of milk and put a tablespoon of honey in it.. it really did help some, then when i go to bed now, i elevate my head so that the acid can't rush up in to my throat, and then my doctor also told me to not eat anything for about an hour or 2 before i go to bed..and then of course i also have a huge bottle of tums that i keep by my bed that seem to help when it's not so bad.  (+ info)

I had the stomach flu (gastroenteritis) a week ago and now I have terrible acid reflux! I've never had it before and it won't go away. I'm taking antibiotics for something else right now and I'm not supposed to have antacid medicine. Any home remedies??
----------

everyone is different and there are a lot of different things that cause acid reflux so not every remedy will work for every person  (+ info)

What if reflux, vomiting and gastric pain continue despite treatment? What might a gastroenterologist do?

I have been taking Omeprazole and have suffered gastric problems for over 9 weeks and continue to have a problem with reflux and am sometimes actually sick. What can I do? Have I any hope of it healing up as I,m beginning to wonder if it will. Do any doctors know if it will soon get better as I,m fed up of being sick and its ruining my life.
----------

A gastroenterologist will perform EGD - esophagogastroduodenoscopy.
It is a diagnostic endoscopic procedure that visualizes the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract.

Vomiting that does not go away, signs of heartburn (esophagus & gastric pains), GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) are some few indications for doctors to perform EGD.
