To the question regarding music, yes, that's perfectly normal.
As far as having over active imaginations, no: ADD is the result of the brain developing in such a way that nothing stimulates it for a prolonged period of time.  (+ info)

Can mercury in shots cause Attention Deficit Disorder?

I think I might have Attention Deficit Disorder. I have been reading about how the mercury in immunization shots can cause autism. The last shots I had was the series for hepatitis vaccine in 2001, flu shot in 2001, and flu shots in 2005 and 2006. Since 2001 I have been having symptoms of ADD like trouble concentrating, making careless mistakes at work, job hopping, and have problems with forgetfulness. I am 32 years old.

How do the medicines for Attention Deficit Disorder work?

How do the medicines for Attention Deficit Disorder work?
Ex: Ritalin? How is ADD related to Depression or anxiety?
----------

The medicine helps me to focus. A simple example is filling out a form - usually I jump all over the place. If on my medication, I complete it sequentially. No, doesn't really matter with a form but in other things I need that focussing.

It somehow helps my brain to slow down and not jump around so much.

My guess is that people with ADHD are more likely to have depression or anxiety. Most people I know with ADHD have or did have depression.  (+ info)

How can I tell if my son has Attention Deficit Disorder?

My son is almost 7 and is generally a good kid. He's got a great heart. Lately I've noticed that he is starting to have problems focusing on certain things. If I give him a task to do and I don't make sure that I have his undivided attention while speaking to him, he won't do it and if I ask him to repeat back to me what I just said, he doesn't know. I've also noticed that if I give him a list of things to remember, he has a hard time retaining that information. Should I have him tested? If so, do I go through his pediatrician for that or a mental health facility?
----------

Some kids are like that by personality. They're pretty ordinary actually, but may have hidden talents that will come out later (if you don't see them already.) If this was a problem with him before, his teachers might have mentioned it. How are his grades?

He needs to learn how to pay attention. It's an important skill and it can be LEARNED. It is not something people are innately born knowing how to do, and also is not something we can be expected to do just because it's convenient. It will take a lot of patience to teach it. The way you handle it now will dictate how he handles it as a grown-up. He can become smarter or he can be more confused all the time. You're being a good parent with your concern.

Children used to be overmedicated for this, and doctors are getting wiser about it, realizing sometimes the kids and parents just need to adjust for different personality types. Pediatricians will also avoid referring a child based upon a description of what only sounds like personality differences. Most will, the good ones.

Just work with your son a while longer, coming up with new ways for him to learn to pay attention. Be sure you're showing by example most times too. Make sure you're not demanding he do things when he's already doing something else you told him to do. Eventually he'll need to learn multitasking beyond a few things, but for now, keep it short and simple, then build up. Throughout the day, like maybe you're in the car with him, point out something on the road for him to notice and get him talking about it for a moment longer than he normally might. Little things like that also teach him to pay attention in a natural way, showing him it's fun and he might miss out otherwise. Try making sure his diet is a good one with lots of veggies, fruits, and lean meat (like baked skinless chicken) and make sure he gets enough exercise. It should be a family effort on those two fronts.

We expect everyone to move so fast these days, doing thirty things at once, it's not a surprise there are more reports of ADD, seizures, depression and the like than ever before. Working with the kid and remembering he's a kid will make things go smoother with him, though if he's like I was when a child, or my daughter, then it will be somewhat lifelong. It's temperament....  (+ info)

Will a CT Scan show Attention Deficit Disorder?

I have what I think is major depressive disorder, but having recently switched psychiatrists my new one now wants me to go for a CT scan to rule out any possibility of another disorder - which I'll soon be attending. The only other disorder that this could possibly be, at least from my perspective, is Attention Deficit Disorder. Would a CT Scan show the brain abnormalities associated with the disorder?
----------

No, your doctor wants to rule out physical abnormalities with your brain. Mental disorders don't show up on CT scans because they are problems with the neurotransmitters and are not like tumors or strokes. I have schizoaffective disorder and my CT shows a healthy brain when I went in for migraine headaches.  (+ info)

How do Attention Deficit Disorder drugs work based upon the neurotransmitter activity in the brain?

Ive being trying to understand but I keep on finding that it has something to do with the neurotransmitter Dopamine, and the reticular activating system. Can someone explain it to me...the web aint making it easy for me.....
----------

It increases the amount of dopamine and noraperephren in the brain making you more alert and more able to deal with boring task  (+ info)

I suffer from a Hyperactivity disorder, but not from deficit of attention. What help could I find for it?

My dad and my brother suffer from ADHD. But I only suffer Hyperactivity, and I don't seem to find information about hyperactive adults with no deficit of attention. Quite the opossite I always need to find myself a new challenge, or task to acomplish, to manage my hyperactivity. Also pretty often I get an excess of energy that seem to be incontrolable for 2 or 3 hours, in which I have to do something physical, and after I released all my energy I feel exhausted, for a couple of days. Most of the times accompanied by super fast heart rate, that has me literally up and running for a few hours. It's really uncomfortable. What kind of condition would this be? Is there any cure? Medicine?
----------

If you are constantly looking for new challenges to throw yourself into, then you might have a form of ADHD after all. Part of the diagnosis is where you have trouble finding something and sticking with it. It's only thing if you finish your projects, but if some go unfinished, then that's actually classic.

Even if that is not the case, a trip to at least your family physician is in order. The way that you are expending you energy is not normal as most people have a better regulation of how their physical activities are handled. You may need to be referred to a specialist. In any case, get it checked out.

Hope that helps.  (+ info)

Is attention deficit disorder classifiable as a disability by the Social Security Administration?

I cannot find help with my ADD. I cannot work because of it. I ruin every opportunity in one way or another. I am a classic case of adult ADD. I have no support strecture or money. Is there any help available or am I destined to fall through the cracks like I have for the last 20 years?
----------

Yes, it is. They will want to know if you are getting treatment (taking meds) and if you are responding to it. You will want some documentation that you at least made an effort to get help and manage the symptoms. If the issues you are having are severe enough, you have a fighting chance.  (+ info)
