Contrast the immediate and long term term management of a patient with cirrhotic ascites vs malignant ascites?

cirrhotic ascites occurs with liver failure. the liver is responsible for synthesizing proteins such as albumin. without these proteins in the blood, you will have oncotic forces driving free water out of the bloodstream and into various body compartments such as the peritoneum, thus producing ascites. in cases of cirrhotic ascites, diuretics such as spironolactone or furosemide can help but the mainstay of therapy is geared towards maintaining nutritonal status and preserving liver function. again remember that the ascites is occurring because the liver isn't making proteins. severe cases would warrant a liver transplant.

malignant ascites occurs because the tumor has invaded the peritoneum, thus compromising the normal barrier and allowing fluid to flow directly into the peritoneal cavity. usually malignant ascites is bloody although it can really be anything- exudative, infective, etc... also malignant cells can usally be seen if the ascitic fluid is sent to pathology. if the malignancy is not treatable then treatment would be palliative. intra-peritoneal administration of chemotherapy may sometimes be an option.  (+ info)

what could that be? ascites, cancer, disease? your opinio Plz?

What is the relation between mosaic perfusion and ascites?
Hello, Please your opinion only- NOT WEBSITE INFO. PLEASE

How or what do you undestand in terms of relation betweem CT scan result (mosaic perfusion and other ct with mosaic attenuation pattern) and ascites with Upper Left Abdominal swollen followed by back pain that radiates from the same direction with back swollen and skin spot (skin looks okay but with mark as if someone bit inside is becoming bright or lighter skin color - not white), skin does not itch, I can feel the difference. Abdoniminal swollen makes noise, hurts and the noise radiates to chest left side as if gases are circulation follwed by pain. wird but this is the best way I can describe.

Doctors are not telling me anything other than just request several exams and claiming that they are using the process of elimination. I need your guests or opinion. thank you

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking, you seem kind of flustered when you were typing...

I am not aware of any link between the CT scan results that you tried to tell us and ascites. Ascites is generally caused by liver damage most commonly secondary to alcohol abuse. Hepatitis and other toxins can also damage the liver as well. When the liver is damaged blood cannot go through it well and this increased pressure leaks the plasma from your blood out into your abdomen causing ascites.

Mosaic perfusion is more involved in the lung and describes differences in perfusion in the lungs on CT scan. I suggest that you just be patient with your doc. They don't keep you in the dark on purpose. If they don't know they will generally tell you that.

I've attached an article to teach you more. I hope this helps  (+ info)

Ascites: Have you or anyone you know been diagnosed?

...with Ascites?

For those who don't know: Ascites is a sure sign of Cirrhosis of the Liver and/or Severe Liver damage. Abdominal distention is the first sign. Then, Kidneys tend to loose their ability to function.

If you have had or know someone that has had this condition, please tell me about the treatment(s) received.

Plz and Thx
Thanks all

Mike: No, not me, my wife :(...and, yes she's had bouts with alcoholism.
----------

You are not correct that ascites is a sure sign of cirrhosis. There are two conditions that can cause fluid to accumulate in the abdomen that requires it to be drained off or "tapped" called paracentesis. One is cirrhosis and the other is ovarian cancer. Ascites can be the first sign that there is a serious problem.

This happened to me when I found out I had cirrhosis. I have primary biliary disease in which my immune system attacks my bile ducts which eventually destroyed my liver with cirrhosis. I never drank or have any viral hepatitis. I was misdiagnosed at first with them telling me they were 99% sure I have malignant ovarian cancer. I didn't. My ovaries were perfectly healthy.

My ascites was controlled with diuretic drugs until I received my transplant. I never needed tapped again once I started taking the diuretics. I was lucky in that regard since many cannot control it with just the meds. They did need to increase my dosages from time to time. I'm doing great today after transplant.

Good luck to your wife. She must never drink again. Whether or not she will eventually need a transplant will depend on how damaged her liver might be when she stopped drinking. If she continues to drink, the liver disease will progress to total liver failure.  (+ info)

What or how to cure ASCITES?

What are the medicine or best things to do when you have ASCITES?
----------

Ascites is not a disease in itself. It means that there is an accumulation of fluid within the abdominal cavity. It is the result of either increased production of fluid (caused by some sort of liver affection) or reduced absorbtion of the fluid by the cells lining the inside of the peritoneal cavity. Or a combination of both. For instance a cancer might have spread to the liver (resulting in increased fluid production) and the peritoneal cavity (resulting in impaired reabsorbtion). If the ascites is a result of cancer where treatment options have been exhausted, the ascites can be managed by draining it when the amount is causing significant discomfort.  (+ info)

if you have ascites will it keep coming back?

it's like extra fluid if you dont know. i have it in my abdomen and theyre draining it but they can only take 500ml a day.
i have metastatic osteosarcoma, mostly lung and liver mets

know it sounds ridiculous and vain considering everything but i hate looking fat/pregnant...
----------

It depends on if the underlying cause can be treated or at least managed well. If it can be treated the ascites will not likely return. If it can be managed it will return but not nearly as quickly.

The most common cause of ascites is cirrhosis or severe liver disease most often due to alcoholism, but since your question is in the cancer section it is most likely due to cancer in the abdomen or pelvis. I don’t know where you are in treatment, but most patients do much better after surgery.  (+ info)

Has anyone on Answers had ascites?

I'm going to the doctors to see if I have it on Thursday and just want to know if anybody else here has had it and how they dealt with it, because I've read it can be the symptoms of liver disease...

Do you die from it? I've got the symptoms - bloated abdomen, prominent veins, pains after eating certain foods (mainly fried things), but I'm not over-weight and generally healthy other than this.
----------

That's how I found out I had cirrhosis of the liver. I started retaining fluid in my abdomen and it just keep getting worse as time went on. This kind of ascites would also put on a lot of weight so check if your weight is going up since fluid weighs a lot. If you aren't gaining weight, then it is most likely is something else other than a liver problem.

If it is ascites from a liver problem, then you would have to go to the hospital to get it drained (paracentesis). If it gets too bad, yes, it can kill you by pressing in on other organs such as the lungs and heart. I finally went to the hospital because of difficulty breathing from all the fluid. They took 7 liters in 20 minutes. That felt really good. I controlled the fluid retention with meds once I found out what was causing it. I eventually got a liver transplant.  (+ info)
