female What is this? Moderate Ascites, mostly in the pelvis.?

I read that during menstruation women get this normally. I was menstruating when I had the cat scan done for a small bowel obstruction. I had a NG tube and everything is fine as far as the SBO. BUT the cat scan found numerous things and the ascities is one of them. Any info is greatly appreciated.Like my gyne told me, if it was serious they wouldn't have let me out of the hospital.

Can ascites without edema be cirrhosis? Or does cirrhosis ascites always have edema?

I'm not sure whether I have ascites or just a little weight gain. I never had a gut until now, but then again I'm in my thirties now. Is it possible to have cirrhosis with ascites, but without edema?
fyi for Baa Baa, here are some statistics, which include a breakdown by age,

Yes, I had ascites with my cirrhosis, but did not have any edema in my extremities or anywhere for that matter. I just had the ascites in my abdomen. I don't know why you would think you have such a serious disease at such a young age. Cirrhosis really should not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you get a little belly weight.  (+ info)

I am a metastatic liver cancer, my belly is swollen with water inside (ascites), I am put in Hospice program

Cancer doctor prescribes Aldactone (spironolactone) to release fluid from my body. I take this medicine every morning. After 8 days taking it, my right leg starts swelling (edema). What should I do now? My blood pressure is normal. My hearbeat is always fast (>90bpm) I take OTC Whey Protein powder (1 cup with water) every morning.

CANCER: On the news this guy who drank human breast milk (with a prescription) beat cancer. It was discovered by Swedish scientists found that human breast milks kills cancer in a petri dish by accident. People who drink it have had some success in fighting off cancer.

You need a prescription and it's about $3 an ounce at a breast milk bank, but it works.

My sister with stage 4 pancreatic cancer has been suffering from ascites. Is this an end of life sign?

Yes, Karen.
Malignant ascites in a person with stage IV pancreatic carcinoma is a sign that time is short. You are usually looking at the last couple of months - BUT - no doctor can predict exactly how long anyone has. I can just tell you that I've seen people in this situation many times, and most are in the last months. Very sorry. This is a type of cancer that we cannot treat effectively with current medicine.  (+ info)

Please, can any one tell me the name of technique of examination for splenomegaly in huge ascites.?

Examination for splenomegaly in huge ascites.
----------

"ballottement"
Pronunciation: bal-ot-mon[h]′
Maneuver used in physical examination to estimate the size of an organ not near the surface, particularly when there is ascites, by a flicking motion of the hand or fingers similar to that involved in dribbling a basketball.  (+ info)

If a metastatic breast cancer sufferer has severe ascites (5 ltrs every 14 days) how long can they live?

It is in the liver and elsehwere but is still termed breast cancer. Other than hormone tablets to help slow down the fluid build up and of course regular draining of fluid, no treatment is being offered.
----------

No sensible doctor will attempt to second guess nature in this way. We have all tried it at one time or another and ended up with egg on our faces. These things are possible to predict with any certainty. There is no doubt that the situation is a terminal one, with her doctors only going for palliation to relieve discomfort.

Be there for your friend, relative or loved one for as long as they need you. None of us lives forever.  (+ info)

My dad has ascites? I need to help him?

My dad got diagnosed with non alcoholic liver cirrosis. He has ascites because of the cirrosis.
I hate to see him in all of the pain- especially because of the ascites. ( accumulation of body fluid)
The doctors cant do much about his ascites. Does anyone knows any home remedies?
ive heard of certain teas or something. Doctors prescribed him dieretics which do absolutely nothing for him.
----------

I'm sure the doctors have already told your dad to eat a low sodium diet. Avoid salt as much as possible. You don't say whether the fluid is just accumulating in his abdomen or he has it other places too such as the legs and feet. Are the doctors prescribing enough diuretics to help him. It is not unusual to increase the diuretics when they don't work. Sometimes a person has to take 2 diuretics. I used to have to take both Lasix and Spironolactone to control my fluid. One without the other did not work for me.

I really don't know of any home remedies that will help. If it gets too bad, your father could talk to his doctors about getting a TIPS procedure done which helps control the fluid. There are pros and cons to this, and this should be discussed in depth before making a decision. He can find out whether or not it might be an option for his fluid problem. The only thing that will cure it for good is a transplant. Has that been mentioned to your father?  (+ info)

What is the best treatment for ascites?

That depends on the cause of the condition.Ascites is the accumulation of fluid (usually serous fluid which is a pale yellow and clear fluid) in the abdominal (peritoneal) cavity. The abdominal cavity is located below the chest cavity, separated from it by the diaphragm. Ascitic fluid can have many sources such as liver disease, cancers, congestive heart failure, or kidney failure.  (+ info)
