How long in a pregnancy before an ultrasound will detect malformation in the fetus?

I was diagnosed with threatened abortion, meaning i almost had a miscarriage. I'm very anxious as to its effect on the fetus. Will an ultrasound detect any abnormalities or deformities? I am particularly worried about limb and skull malformations. How long before it can actually detect anything?
----------

Some severe malformations can be picked up as early as 8 weeks. The ones you described should be detectable by 20 weeks. However, there is no need to especially concerned about those, unless you've had a past baby with those.

Threatened abortion is very common and most of the surviving babies are perfectly healthy.

Good luck.  (+ info)

Would wisdom teeth be considered a "congenital or developmental malformation" for insurance purposes?

Specifiically, I'd like to know if wisdom teeth extraction (for an adult) would be excluded from insurance coverage if the insurance plan has a stipulation that states the following:

"Congenital or development malformations existing on the covered person's effective date are not covered."

Thanks!
----------

That sentence is actually refering to a fetus, congential/development malformations are those present at birth, whether inherited or caused by the environment.

Wisdom teeth are certainly present at birth but they aren't considered to be malformations. You would be better placed to contact your insurance provider as it would be different depending on your level of cover, and who covers you.

I'm assuming you're from America but most Australian policies cover this under major dental for a portion of the amount (i.e. I got $300 back for a $1,500 procedure).  (+ info)

Can an Antiepileptic medication cause malformation or autism in a 22 weeks pregnancy?

My daughter has 22 weeks of pregnancy and she is having seizures. The Doctor said that she needs to start medications as soon as possible. She had epilepsy and she is been out of medications for about 7 years. We are worry because we heard that this can cause malformation or autism in the baby. Is that possible if she has 22 weeks already?
----------

First of all, there is no definitive research on what does or does not cause autism. Even that study that was widely publicized a couple years ago (that said it was the shots) has been retracted because that doctor did more research and found the link wasn't as definitive as he thought.
Now, it may be true that certain medications taken during pregnancy can cause an increased chance of birth defects. However, the doctor wouldn't be nonchalant about giving your daughter medication. The risks to the baby need to be weighed against the risks to your daughter and the baby if the medication isn't taken.
During a seizure, it is not uncommon for the patient to stop breathing for a period of time, and it's also possible that during a seizure, your daughter might fall, or hurt herself or the baby. These situations can cause more harm to the baby than the medications.
I would definitely have your daughter discuss your concerns with her doctor, but in many cases the benefits of medication during pregnancy can outweigh the risks of side effects.  (+ info)

What is the difference between a person with Chiari Malformation and a normal person?

I know Chiari is when your brain is basically too big for your head and your fluids can't get through, but what affect does it have on the person? How do people with Chiari act compared to a normal person?
----------

As a person with Chiari Malformation Type 1 (I'm assuming your asking about type 1, since there are 4 types), I can tell you that you are asking a very vague question.

The biggest symptoms of Chiari are; headaches at the back of the head, dizziness, blurred vision, slurred speech, trouble finding words, balance problems, weakness in arms or legs, numbness in extremities. This is just a few. There are over 100 symptoms of Chiari. Each person with Chiari has their own symptoms. Me, personally, I don't get headaches(which is the most common). But, I do have the dizziness and blurred vision, along with many others.

Hope this helped.  (+ info)

What is chiari 1 malformation and multiloculated syrinx?

I have both and i have surgery on thursday for decompression. Can you please give me a definition for both?
----------

You should talk to your doctor. Part of your doctor's job is to explain your medical conditions and any needed treatment, in a way that you can understand. If you have questions about your medical condition or treatment, you need to ask your doctor.  (+ info)
