What can I expect at first visit with a speech pathologist?

Seeing a speech pathologist tomorrow, first time ever. I self-referred b/c I do believe I may have aphasia. What can I expect? How long should I expect to be there?
----------

The SLP will do an evaluation. This will include talking to you about your concerns and maybe doing some testing with your speech. The SLP might look inside your mouth to see if you have any structural abnormalities. Treatment should be recommended and any diagnosis may be made at this time. It should take about an hour. Good luck!  (+ info)

What objects would make interesting baby names?

I did this months ago and got some interesting answers. The question is: What words or objects do you think would make interesting baby names? They don't have to be ones you would actually use, just ones that sound like names.

Examples for girls: Meridian, Piano, Aphasia

Examples for boys: Rafter, Dice, Halogen

Rules:
-- Examples can't be from nature: no flowers, gemstones, or trees
-- Examples can't be already in the top 1000 baby names (so Gage and Garrison are out)
-- Examples shouldn't be virtues like Liberty or Justice; I'm looking for objects or plain old words.

Have fun!

Help for Stroke / Aphasia Sufferers.?

My Mother had a stroke (2 years ago) and suffers from aphasia.
She is/was a writer.
Now she can’t read and can’t write.
Her speech is improving but is still pretty awful.
I’ve searched high and low for something to help her.
Internet, support groups, etc.
Do you have a loved one with aphasia?
What helps?
Where have you found the miracle cure/medicine/therapy?
Thank you so much.
----------

There really isn't any miracle cure, medicine or magic therapy for aphasia. Therapy can help but it's a very slow process with mixed results. All strokes, and thus all cases of aphasia, are different in degree and severity. My husband has a very severe case of aphasia, apraxia and agraphia but he was able to learn to read again 2 years out from his stroke.

There's lists of resources in this Aphasia and Stroke Caregivers Guide....  (+ info)

any cures for Aphasia?

hi just wondering are there any known solutions/cures to Aphasia.
----------

Unfortunately the only thing that may even remotely help is speech therapy. Aphasia is generally a result of a stroke. Stroke is death of tissue in the brain. Once these nerves die, they don't regenerate. If this is what you are talking about then speech therapy may help.

A question about Aphasia?

Aphasia is loss of speech. There are different types of aphasia that can occur. If Broca area was affected by a stroke would the content of the spoken word be affected or would the ability to pronounce the words be affected?
----------

I always just remember that Broca starts the same as "broken"--if Broca's area is affected by a stroke, the speech quantity will be impoverished, with short, awkward sentences and few words.
A stroke in Wernicke's area produces a "fluent aphasia"--speech quantity is normal, but non-sensical.  (+ info)

can people with aphasia have a normal brain scan??

Yes.

Aphasia, or inability to talk, can be due to various reasons. Stroke is a top reason, but people can have aphasia from other reasons. The most notable reason is psychiatric reason - depression, psychosomatic disorders, schizophrenia, etc. Also, muscle disorders can also cause inability to talk. Further, not all brain disorders can be detected on CT or MRI scans.  (+ info)

Can a stroke affect only one personality in someone with multiple personalities?

This is strictly conjecture on my part. My recently deceased mother had a serious stroke. The day I brought her home from the hospital, I was in the kitchen and heard a young girl's voice coming from her room. A perfect, clearly ennuciated sentence, though I couldn't tell what she said. I don't know if my mom had MPD but I'd always suspected it. A psychiatrist said that it would have been impossible, if she did have that condition, to speak clearly considering the expressive aphasia. Again, this is all conjecture on my part. My mother was an excellent woman but changed behaviors so quickly.
Any thoughts from a neurologist or anyone in the medical field?
----------

I am not in the medical field, but I myself have multiple personalities and have found that whatever bodily disease I have usually effects the others. What may have happened with your mother is that she attempted to speak and get your attention, but it came out differently then her own voice because of the stroke. There isn't any way for most people to know if they have a multiple personality because alot of people are able to incorperate them into one entity, unless they get extremely upset which may cause them to "go inside" themselves and another "person" will take over to handle whatever situation upset them. I know from experience that as long as I get time to myself and can be myself then I have no trouble with any one personality "taking over". If your Mom had multiple personalities then the stroke may have been so stressful that a personality with a stronger will may have taken over long enough to say what she had to say. There are some things in this world that even doctors and psychology can't explain.  (+ info)
