what are the odds of surviving a aortic dissection?

In 2004 my wife was in a car accident and she had to have a aortic dissection done. She survived but I know little about this procedure. What are the odds that people will survive this procedure. Also did she have to have the aortic dissection because of the car wreck or was this just something she was going to have to have done anyways?
----------

Very few survive an aortic dissection of any kind. If it happened during an accident then she is very lucky to survive... I would thank the Paramedics as well as the Doctors both. Aortic dissections during a car accident are not at all uncommon... at least in major accidents!! Most people bleed out before they get removed from the car or die just about the time they get to the ER. Now that being said you asked, "or was this something she was going to have to have done anyway?" If your referring to a AAA or abdominal aortic aneurysm then I would say the answer is an aortic dissection is different than a AAA. AAA's do involve the aorta, but they are usually caused by other life factors(age, tall / skinny, males) not by accidents. I have seen both being a Paramedic, but I can tell you either one does not have a high survival rate... Thank GOD and everyone who has helped her.  (+ info)

What is the ball park figure life expectancy of inoperable aortic stenosis?

A friend went into surgery for aortic valve replacement and the surgeon closed him back up due to the aorta being too fragile and calcified. This man is 80 years old. What should he be aware of now and can anyone tell me a ballpark figure of life expectancy for him?

Does anyone have ay experienceor know someone who has had an aortic rote replacement heart surgery?

I have Marfans Syndrome and amnow facing surgery to replace my aortic route. I was wantig to find out details of what it inviolves, how long the surgery might take, other sdetails. Idf anyone is familiar with this or has any knowledge feedback wouldbe greatly appreciated.
----------

I had it done 11 months ago. when I woke up it felt like 1000 pounds had been lifted off my chest the mechanical valve has a nice click . Don't wait around don't worry about it just do it,, the risks are small compared with the benefit. treat yourself good for the few weeks up to surgery , get good sleep listen to classical music drink lots of liquids . eat good protein, start to set up your house for a good one month of bed rest. set up water bottles and protein powder near your bed, reading materials, get excited about feeling better , you will be able to do allot more and you wont believe how much pain is there that you are so used to,, you don't know its there,,, you will hurt for a few weeks after surgery, they will give you pain pills. get off them soon and start to just get up and around soon and no heavy walking, just walking around the house then a few blocks. slowly build up. good luck!! write me an email for more info or questions. [email protected] Do breathing exercises to help your lungs while on bed rest slow inhale and exhale.. and deep.. they give you a gadget to breath hard and fast thriugh for a test and that fine but the slow deep breathing exercises are the best when your healing up your sternum, you need to stay still for a few weeks and then your lungs get weak,, do the breathing exercises then,,, it will help..

go mechanical valve the warfarin is not hard to take, it thins your blood for the mechanical valve the tick tick is relaxing and you will be thrilled to hear it when you realize what a good choice you made! and the pressure is gone!

What is the best method/test for detecting aortic regurgitation?

Is an echo or a doppler better for detecting Aortic regurgitation?
Color Doppler,Pulsed Dopple,Duplex Doppler,"Bedside" or continuous wave Doppler,
Or is And echo better?
2d-echo,3d-echo,color echo?

Or am I missing something?
Basically I want to know what is the best test to detect it.
----------

Echo, because that way they can see the blood leaking out of the valve, thats whay i get every year its the only way they can track my aortic regurgitation. I would think a 3d echo would be the best to see it(since its 3d), and color would be good also.  (+ info)

What happens before, during, and after an aortic valve replacement?

Ok so i am 16 years old, and i have Aortic stenosis, bicuspid aortic valve, aortic regurgitation and an Enlarged aorta. I am soon going to be getting an aortic valve replacement. I am just wondering what happens before and after the surgery and how long i will be in the hospital, how long in the ICU, what kind of tubes/machines will i need? any information will help. thanks :)
----------

Mechanical valve will last for ever. But the red blood cells will be damaged and clot will be formed in the implanted mechanical valve. In order to prevent the formation of blood clot, the patient has to take warfarin (a blood thinner) for the rest of his/her life.
If pig valve is used, there is no necessity to take the medicine (warfarin) for the rest of his/her life. But the tissue valve will function only for 15 years.
Since you are too young, you have to opt for mechanical valve and to take the medicine for the rest of your life.
Valve replacement is indicated for virtually all who can tolerate surgery. In younger patients, the patient's own pulmonic valve can be used, providing good durability; a bioprosthesis is then used to replace the pulmonic valve (Ross procedure). Most often, the aortic valve is replaced with a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve.
You will stay in an intensive care unit for the first 2 or 3 days following the operation. Your heart functions will be monitored constantly. The average hospital stay is 1 - 2 weeks. Complete recovery will take a few weeks to several months, depending on your health before surgery.  (+ info)

Is it dangerous for me to excercise and get my heartbeat up if I had an aortic dissection 3 yrs ago?

Three years ago I was in a car wreck and had an aortic dissection due to the impact. I have never been one to excercise at all, but have turned 30 and really want to get rid of some extra pounds. Is it dangerous for me excercise? I get nervous about my heart when it starts beating fast.
----------

You should see your Cardiologist before deciding on type of and level of exercise you'd be allowed to pursue.

It's very difficult to answer you more precisely from the info you shared, but basically, moderate walk is something that never hurt a soul.

As for your heart rate - of course, it's completely reasonable it makes you nervous when it rises fast, BUT, the "catch 22" is also the fact that you're not in shape and consequently, your heart races faster due to lack of training. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean you should beat yourself with that, but work a bit on your eating habits, control coffee drinking (and, smoking - if you do smoke) and start with moderate speed walks - at least, before you schedule an appointment with your Doc.

Good luck and take care!

What are the chances of a uterine rupture?

I will be almost 3 years since my last c-section. (34 months to be exact) My hospital does not have an anesthesiologist available 24-7, so I am considering having another c-section. Does anyone know the chances of having a uterine rupture 34 months after having surgery? I just don't want to undergo surgery if my chances are very slim of having a complications, especially if a VBAC would be safe. My doctor has left the decision up to me. If anyone has had to make this decision, I am interested in why you chose either way.
----------

If you do have a rupture and the anesthesiologist isn't in-house when it happens, you WILL have a C-section with local anesthesia, and you won't enjoy it.

The hospitals near me don't allow VBAC without a full C-section team in-house.

Why did you have the first C-section? That can influence your risk.

ACOG recommends having personnel for C-section immediately available. Any physician who disregards that advice is playing with fire.  (+ info)

Where can I find a list of surgeons who specialize exclusively in aortic valve replacement?

If such a list is not available, please recommend a heart surgeon who specializes exclusively in aortic valve replacement. The closer they are located to Louisiana the better, but close proximity is not required, just desired.

Thanks

Try any large University based hospital for starters. Before Katrina, I'm sure Tulane would have been the place to go. Not sure if Oschner is still up to full speed yet. Try Baylor or any of the big Texas hospitals.  (+ info)

What is the average lifespan of someone with Aortic Stenosis?

I'm 19 and was born with congenital aortic stenosis the symptoms are just moderate/serious at the moment. I just wanted to know what is my average life span, say with out any medication or operations?
I'm not worried, I'm just interested.
Well I am sort of worried it gets me down because it's really painful. :P
I dunno life expectancy, whatever?
----------

Nobody thinks of untreated life span these days. Good treatment is available. Some do well with just medications, others with balloon valvotomy or valve replacements. Anyway, with modern treatment, life span of a person with congenital aortic stenosis is pretty long for you to stop worrrying!  (+ info)

How long does it typically take for a cerebral aneurysm to rupture?

I recently had a cerebral aneurysm rupture and bleed out in my brain. After a very long surgery I am now recovering. I was curious how long it was in my brain before it ruptured?
----------

It is true, there is no way to know. Although more than likely, it had been there a while. Aneurysms, unless caused by trauma, tend to grow fairly slowly. Some aneurysm locations in the brain can be faster than others due to differences in blood flow.  (+ info)
