Survivors of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm. What type of therapy did you have? For how long?

I had a left brain rupture that left me blind in my right eye, paralyzed on my right side, and in a coma for ten days. I have no memory of the year and a half of my life after the rupture. I had a year and a half of physical therapy, speech, and occupational therapy. I am 95% recovered, but I had to relearn everything a newborn child would learn: Be toilet trained, brush my teeth, walk, talk, etc. It took the speech therapist a month to teach me how to print the letters A, B, and C.
The insurance policy that I had at the time of my rupture had no limits on the length of my therapy. It was May 31, 1993. Several years later the company that I had worked for switched the institutional policy to Blue Cross/Blue Shield which had a 100 days outpatient therapy limit. If that policy had been in effect when I had the rupture, I would be a vegetable today. I would like to know how your insurance policy effected your recovery.
----------

As a physical therapist, this frustrates me to no end. 100 visits is actually still pretty good. I've seen many policies that have absolutely horrendous benefits...my own...BCBS PPO has a limit of $4,000...in a hospital based setting, that might get you 8 visits of each discipline. Some Unicare PPO policies only pay for 12 visits and only cover $25 a visit (my goodness, why even bother), finally, the worst I had recently was one that had a $1,000 limit.

It disgusts me that the policies determine what type of medical care you get and that they are willing to pay for surgery and hospitalization, but not for recovery. For example, if you have a rotator cuff repair, it typically requires 3-5 months of therapy...so they will pay for the surgery, but not for the recovery.

There are review processes in place, but usually by the time insurance companies will offer more benefits (about a 3 month wait), the damage is already done.

Disgusting...I'm thinking of starting a private insurance policy just for PT coverage!!!  (+ info)

who is the best surgeon to treat basilar tip aneurysm?

how to decide between watching for growth versus getting surgery before it ruptures. My aneurysm is between 6-7mm , asymptomatic for the most part but with lifting weights I get headaches. The neck is to wide for coiling. Should I get surgery now and who is well renowed to do the surgery.
----------

Well if it were up to me and I knew I had this little time bomb in my head I would get it repaired. My sisters hairdresser was getting really bad headaches, 27 years old no health insurance, so she did not seek medical care. Hers ruptured and she left behind a husband and kids. The symptoms do not correlate to how serious the condition is, the size does. Seek out a good neuro. surgeon and team up with a vascular surgeon as the team and get it fixed. They break with no notice.  (+ info)

Can a person have pain with an abdominal aortic aneurysm other than when one is about to rupture?

I have an AAA that a CT scan in Feb 09 showed to be 4.8 cm. I have an appointment with my vascular surgeon July 29, 2009, at which time he said surgical repair will most likely be necessary. In the past few days, I have been having sharp pain to the left of my navel and pains going down my legs. My feet hurt when I am lying down.
----------

It's a good idea to get checked. You can get pain if the lining of the aneurysm begins to tear (dissect) without rupture.

Hopefully, it's something fairly benign.  (+ info)

my grandpa is diagnosed with an aneurysm?

i don`t know much about it . i just found out over dinner . i just know that it isn`t ruptured and that my grandpa has to be more aware of his blood pressure . is it possible for someone to survive a rupture ? is it possible that an aneurysm will never rupture ? please pray for my 83 year old grandpa .
----------

My aunt had one in her brain for over 20 years and it never ruptured. She died in a car wreck last year. You just never know when your time is gonna be up. There are surgical methods of treatment, but they are not without risk. The aneurysm could rupture while attempting to repair it. At 83, at least your grandpa has had a good, long life. Personally, I would be thrilled to know if I will ever live to be that age. I know that's probably not very comforting. I suck at providing helpful support. Sorry.  (+ info)

My mother has a aortic aneurysm what are the chances of a rupture?

she is about 5 foot and about 8 inches, shes 15 stone and shes has smoked since she was a teenager she is now 44.

I did post a similar question earlier please do not get confused.
----------

The exact chances of a rupture depend on the size of the aneurysm. The size is usually monitored with an ultrasound scan, or sometimes a CT, but this is used more as a guide to what kind of interventions may be available.

A normal Aorta is about 20-30mm in diameter. Risks are:
•40 mm - 55 mm - about a 1 in 100 chance of rupture per year.
•55 mm - 60 mm - about a 10 in 100 chance of rupture per year.
•60 mm - 69 mm - about a 15 in 100 chance of rupture per year.
•70 mm - 79 mm - about a 35 in 100 chance of rupture per year.
•80 mm or more - about a 50 in 100 chance of rupture per year.

As a rule the risk of rupture is also increased if the patient is still smoking, female or has high blood pressure.

Please don't be confused by the 50 mm threshold for surgery. Patients are at risk before they reach 50mm. The threshold is used as studies have shown that under 50 mm, the risks associated with operating on an aneurysm, are higher than the risk of rupture. Conversely, in aneurysms over 50 mm, the risk of rupture becomes higher than the risk of a surgical complication. Hence surgical intervention is indicated

In some cases doctors will let aneurysms get much bigger where they are concerned that a patient is much more likely to have complications in surgery than to have their aneurysm rupture.

Your mother should be encouraged to stop smoking as smoking increases both the risk of rupture and the rusk of surgical complications.

All the best  (+ info)

What are the chances of surviving an aneurysm in the brain?

This girl my friend know just dropped dead from a few weeks ago, and its freaking me out.

Can you tell that you have one?

And if somebody did have one, what are the chances of it rupturing?

I know i havnt given much info... but brain aneurysms in general.
----------

Unless you have some reason to think you have an aneurysm, you really shouldn't worry about it. No one can tell you over the internet if you have an aneurysm. Medical imaging tests (x-ray, cat scan or MRI) are the only ways to detect them. The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of an aneurysm is not smoking. And if you do smoke, quit.

In general, the risk of anyone having a brain aneurysm is estimated to be between about 1 and 3%. The actual prevalence is hard to determine because some people die of other causes without them ever being detected. If you have a family history, your risk may be higher. However, there are also other significant risk factors including smoking and high blood pressure. So, you can reduce your risk with a healthy lifestyle.

If you have a brain aneurysm, the risk of rupture depends on the size, location and other factors. In general, for most aneurysms the risk is around 1% per year.

I hope this was helpful. further reading:

Is a brain aneurysm dangerous if it is too small to place a coil?

I was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm but the angiogram showed that it was too small to insert a coil to prevent it from rupturing. Does this mean that it's not big enough to be dangerous or should I be worried?
----------

I would say if the doctor said not to be worried, you probably don't have to be worried. I'm not sure if I'm correct but I think many people have very small aneurysms that don't cause trouble. You could get a second opinion from a teaching hospital if you are near one. Good luck!  (+ info)
