What activities would be recommended for a person recovering from a traumatic brain injury?

My father suffered a traumatic brain injury in May. He is finally going to be released from the hospital next week. As a result of the accident he is severely anxious and cannot concentrate long enough to do anything. Can anyone recommend any activities that he would be able to participate in? I noticed that when I took him to dinner in a busy restaurant he became very anxious. I also noticed that when I took him to dinner in a quiet restaurant he was okay.

Most TBI survivors who are just beginning recovery have a very difficult time with overstimulation. It can last months or years (perhaps depends upon area/s damaged and to what extent?). The overstimulation can be caused by tv, music, hearing others talk, etc. It feels overwhelming, you can't focus no matter how hard you try- very frustrating. Take that fact into account for the future.

1. Look at him patiently as he speaks to you. Don't interrupt or change the subject quickly.

2. Turn off the tv or radio.

3. Sit in a more quiet area when you are out.

4. Don't urge him to answer Q's, or to explain what he means. (The brain takes a very long time to heal. Be patient :) He will get to it- but you may want to gently remind him of subject when he forgets in frustration.

5. Look into a local brain injury program. They are all through the states, and non-profit. They hold support groups, which can be helpful. They also have many employees happy to help in whatever way they can. They can assist your father find work, a place to live, apply for medical assistance and Social Security. Seeing others who have adjusted well and seem so much farther can be encouraging.

6. There are a couple of great websites for you to check out. The first is a terrific source of info. Very informative, and touches on many issues. The second is a place where survivors and survivors' family meet and chat. People there are fabulously supportive to everyone! (And that's pretty darn rare, imo.)

What is the best thing to do when going through a traumatic event?

Like when something traumatic/stressful or even something that's emotional happens.

What should you do?
What things you should and should not eat?

And how to forget about those tough times?

Thanks
----------

The best thing to do in a traum is to survive first. Do what it takes to survive.
If you learn the EFT method before hand, you can apply that to anything that comes up to dissolve the trauma and if not, then apply it afterwards.
Otherwise stay calm and THINK about he best way to survive, how to best care for yourself, eat right , gather around other people who are trustworthy, talk about it , find as much support as possible.  (+ info)

How should I keep myself as calm and relaxed as possible during a traumatic situation while I am pregnant?

So we had a horrible traumatic experience today with our dog and I am completely traumatized. I keep playing the incident over and over in my mind and have cried the majority of the day. I am 32 weeks pregnant so I know this can't be good. The dog is at the vet overnight so I also have that worry on my hands. Any tips on how I can make myself relax and not stress as much, so as not to hurt my baby in any way?
----------

I always find reading quite relaxing, as while I'm doing it I'm not thinking about anything else!

Also, baths are like miracles. Get some candles and some essential oils and relax a little. They're also really good for your aches and pains.  (+ info)

Sleeping with post traumatic stress disorder how can I help?

My boyfriend has post traumatic stress disorder from being abused as a child by his mother and father. He relives the moments as he sleeps, constantly twitching and moving. What is the best way for me to help him wake up without harming him or myself?
----------

has he asked you to wake him up? is he having nightmares?

my husband had PTSD after his tour in iraq, and he wanted me to wake him because often he was having nightmares. sadly, when i would wake him he often would be so confused he would slip right back into sleep and the dream. there were a few times when i tried to wake him he lunged at me (never hurting me). i found the best way was to touch his arm very gently (but firmly) and to say his name very lovingly. if he didn't wake, i would start to rub his arm slowly but with pressure. there were a few nights when he didn't wake, but this seemed to soothe him to stop twitching or calling out.

the thing that helped the MOST was therapy. google EMDR and tell your boyfriend about it. it is a simple method that used in therapy helps you to process faster and more completely the things you need to work through. he would have to find a psychologist who is trained and who uses EMDR.

it actually helped my husband to have his diagnosis of PTSD removed.  (+ info)

What's the best way to overcome Complex Post Traumatic Stress Dissorder?

What are some ways that one can overcome the symptoms of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, such as lack of trust?
I have a workbook at home, but I'm just checking to see if maybe there are some people out there who have used a more effective method to combat the symptoms. Thank you.
----------

Trust is a hard thing to do when you have complex post traumatic stress disorder. I have it to. What I do is I just tell the person I'm trying to build trust with that I have PTSD and I don't trust very well. They should respect your wish and help you to start trusting them. I had one person say that to me and I said ask me any question you want and I will answer honestly. I don't think books do alot for you. I think if you get out there and face your fears it will become easier and easier.  (+ info)

Is it possible to regain movement in paralyzed limbs after a traumatic brain injury?

my friend has recently had a traumatic brain injury to the Left side of his brain, 6 weeks later his right arm and right leg are not able to move...but he does have feeling in both...says it feels numb....any info would help. Thanks!
----------

It is possible that he will be able to regain full movement again, but it will take a lot of hard work and dedication through rehabilitation in order for him to regain this movement.

He will likely need to work in conjunction with both an occupational therapist and a physiotherapist and in conjunction they will be able to work together with him and come up with a program that will help him to regain the movement.

It is a good to hear that he has feeling in both of the arms, and although they are numb, it tells me that they will likely come to work, but as mentioned, it will not be easy, and he will need all of the encouragement of his family and close friends to help him with the problems that he has been experiencing.

Good luck, and I know that he will be able to do it with very hard work and perseverance.  (+ info)

I keep obsessing about a traumatic event that happened 5 years ago?

Actually all my life I have obsessed over one traumatic event after the other, fixating on 1, until a new 1 takes over. It's weird because it's usually years after it happened that the real fixation begins. How can I stop this? It's killing me! The more it replays in my mind, the less sense it makes and the worse I feel, I feel like I have distorted what really happened and am forgetting fragments.
----------

I've been through hell with trauma...1st my daughter died, then I was in a bad wreck that paralized me awhile, then I lost several relatives, then a nasty divorce_
I've found that by putting my faith in God & turning over the pain to Him I can get through anything.
I pray my way through it~  (+ info)

How to deal with post traumatic stress disorder?

Is there a way to deal/cure post traumatic stress disorder myself? I don't have any money or insurance to talk to a lets say counselor, nor do I really think that going to a shrink would be a good idea. I read online and am sure I have PTSD and I know exactly what caused it. There's no way to avoid situations that trigger memories. I can't lock myself up all day/night. What can I do? Are there any free support groups?
