What exactly is amblyopia?

I read an explanation of it, but I still don't really understand what it is.
----------

Weakness of sight.

One eye best corrected does not see as well as the other. It's the clinical term for "lazy eye", although lazy eye can also refer to an eye that drifts. Someone who has amblyopia can have 20/20 vision in their better seeing eye, but maybe only best vision of 20/60 in their lazy eye. This is just one example.  (+ info)

I have amblyopia on my right eye?

Will this ruin my opportunity to join the Navy SEALs? I'm kind of worried because I'm really looking foward to this. I was reading on the site for the requirements for Navy SEALs & it said must have at LEAST 20/200 vision with correctable 20/20. I highly doubt surgery will be able to fix amblyopia, it might but I don't know. Can someone please help? Thank you all.
----------

Hey dude. I understand your concern for the Navy and how you might not be able to join because of your eye. While I don't have amblyopia, I do have myopia ( or poor vision when looking at distant objects). I didn't know anything about your disorder until I looked it up. My only answers for you are to visit an optometrist or any eye specialist for that matter. If you can't, just visit your regular physician.

Oh, here's some info. I found on the net. It should be fairly reliable:

Treatment of strabismic or anisometropic amblyopia consists of correcting the optical deficit and forcing use of the amblyopic eye, either by patching the good eye, or by instilling topical atropine in the eye with better vision. One should also be wary of over-patching or over-penalizing the good eye when treating for amblyopia, as this can create so-called "reverse amblyopia" in the other eye.[8][11]

Form deprivation amblyopia is treated by removing the opacity as soon as possible followed by patching or penalizing the good eye to encourage use of the amblyopic eye.[8]  (+ info)

Can Amblyopia be caused by trauma?

When i was a kid my mom said that my brother hitting me in the eye caused it. Is that true or possible?
----------

Amblyopia is condition that occurs in children in which one eye has poorer vision than the other. If amblyopia is left untreated, a child's vision will not develop correctly and as the brain matures, one eye will remain with poor vision.

It is very unlikely that it was caused by your brother hitting you. The optic nerve which connects the brain to the eyes lies behind the nose. For this to occur your brother must have smashed the front of your face including the bridge of your nose. I do not feel your brother was this abusive.  (+ info)

can amblyopia be cured in adults?

I am now 16 years old and I have amblyopia in my right eye
I have looked online and there are claims in both directions, both that it can be treated as well as it cannot be treated

One doctor has said no cure is currently available but that anything is possible in the future, so who knows?
----------

No. I have it. It is NOT curable, it is for life. Sorry.  (+ info)

Is there a cure for lazy eye(amblyopia) I am 23 is it too late?

most doctors as well as most medical studies of amblyopia agree that past the "critical period" (birth to age 8), not much can be done.

there is a new study that says minimal progress can be made after age 8 with aggressive amblyopia therapy, but the progress is just that: minimal. and the time/effort investment for that minimal progress would likely be significant.

so the short version is...yes, by most standards and in the opinions of most eye professionals...its probably too late in a 23 year old.

edit: and dont listen to anyone who says anything having to do with the word "Bates".  (+ info)

My corneal specialist strongly suspects that I may have what is called refractive amblyopia...?

I am going to be fifteen in January and I was wondering if there is anything at all I could do. One of my eyes... the right eye is significantly worse than the other... if anything I would like for my eyes to stop getting worse and I was wondering if there is anything I could do or if I should just accept it...
Thank you in advance...

First of all you need to insist upon glasses. Even if you are not nearsighted or far sighted, there is an additional correction which needs to be made. Do that now!

I've been there and from the time I was 10 or 11 doctors ignored it. They corrected the mild nearsightedness and overlooked the real problem. The result is that I was 18 and suffering in college lecture halls by not being able to see what was being written on the board - heck I couldn't even tell someone was writing on the board.

Luckily I broke my glasses and went to a "discount" eye place to have my eyes tested and get a new prescription. The ophthalmologist said that I should have had the new refractive correction years before.

I was amazed at what I could see.

While I never used an eye patch, I would suggest you get one to cover the strong eye in favor of the weak one. It isn't that effective in refractive amblyopia but it might help. Should have been done a few years ago actually.

You are too young for surgery but that might be an option when you are over 18 years old...or a few years later.

Glasses will help to correct the refractive imbalance between the eyes. The prescription cost will depend upon whether or not there needs to be one or two corrections per lens.

I get headaches from wearing my glasses for long periods of time. If you do, take them off for a while and try the eye patch.

I also do eye exercises which help to some extent - eye rolling type stuff - it actually feels better afterwards.

There are also thos glasses you can get with the pin holes in them and they also help to exercise your eyes. While you don't have a muscle issue, it still might help to retrain your brain.

I'm sure a google search will yield more.

Do get glasses. I still see streetlights as if they were Van Gogh paintings when I take my glasses off at night. You'll be amazed at what the world can look like.

I am curious. Did the doctor simply diagnose you and then throw you to the wolves? Or did he/she write a prescription for glasses or suggest a patch? anything?

Best wishes and please don't do nothing - you don't have to be a victim.
By asking your question you are focused on the right direction.  (+ info)

amy expirience eith lazy eye surgery Amblyopia?

my daughter is about to have this done. Just wondering if anyone has gone trough it and how they reacted.
----------

I have had this surgery 3 times, at 3 ,16 and 20.
The eye is only a bit sore afterwards ,when you move it.
It does not bleed and heals very quickly.
Your little girl will be fine.Don't worry.
What I most remember about being 3 and having it done is going to sleep, waking up again and getting a big doll for my 3rd birthday in the hospital.
I missed my parents because they weren't allowed to stay in those days.
At 16 I was embarassed about having my eyelashes cut-no one really noticed.
At 20 I didn't like the idea of having the stitches out but that was very quick and I don't remember it hurting.
Your little girl will be grateful to you one day for giving her this opportunity for straighter eyes.
I am very grateful to my parents and I have sight in both eyes today because they got the best help for me that they could and were consistent about the follow up care for me.  (+ info)

I got amblyopia as a child and weak far sighted vision in the other iam now in my 20's is there any treatment?

I have amblyopia of my left eye (blind/lazy eye) I got it when I was 6 yrs old and refused to patch it as a kid,now im stuck with it,I have tried learning to drive but my eye sight is so constrained its very difficult to see and my peripheal vision is nil,is there any treatments for amblyopia at this age or is it too late? Also I need to know if there is any driving aids for visual impairments?
----------

Amblyopia can be treated at any age - although it isn't as easily fixed once past the age of around 6 or 7. Talk to your eye doctor about vision therapy and get referred to someone who specializes in vision therapy. (you can find websites that will list optometrists who perform vision therapy - usually members of COVD)
There are driving aids for certain visual impairments. It's best you discuss this with your eye doctor to see if there is something that can benefit you and your condition.  (+ info)

Can wear contact lenses if I have Amblyopia a (lazy eye)...?

Sure. I do. The non-lazy eye will probably be fully corrected with contacts, but the lazy eye may or may not. I was told all my life that no correction could be given to my lazy eye, but it turned out that contacts really did make a difference. When I wear my contact on my lazy eye, it is usually a lot straighter! If your doctor ever tells you that the lazy eye is non-correctable, try getting a second opinion. I did and it worked out for me!  (+ info)
