Can someone with amblyopia (lazy eye) ever be free of glasses? Can they successfully get lasik surgery?

If your lazy eye is able to be corrected with contacts or glasses then LASIK will most likely be able to correct you to what your glasses are able to correct you to. If your best corrected vision is say 20/40 in glasses then that is probably the best LASik will get you. THe same if your eyes can see 20/20 in glasses. Some people with a lazy eye can not be corrected at all ( my daughter has one lazy eye and cant see any better with glasses.) As far as correcting the lazy eye, physically, even if you had lasik and didn't need glasses to see your eye would still be turned, ( if your eye does turn in/out) so I have seen many patients who are not completely happy after lasik because they no longer have the glasses to make their eye look normal. ( not turned in or out) Depending on your age only muscle surgery can correct that.  (+ info)

Could Strabismus or Amblyopia start at the age of 15?

Or does it start at a certain age or under certain circumstances?

Does anyone know about Amblyopia, eye disorder?

My kid 4 has this and astigmatism (which is mild). Doctor order eye glasses but they say it can not be corrected. Is that true?
----------

It may be worthwhile to see another eye doctor, especially a pediatric ophthalmologist. The quote is from the 3rd source.

"Previously, eye care professionals often thought that treating amblyopia in older children would be of little benefit. However, surprising results from a nationwide clinical trial show that many children age seven through 17 with amblyopia may benefit from treatments that are more commonly used on younger children. This study shows that age alone should not be used as a factor to decide whether or not to treat a child for amblyopia."  (+ info)

What year was amblyopia discovered?

The name had to be coined at some point and time.
I have to disagree with you #1 because 15 years ago they were still figuring out how to properly treat it. It had to be coined at some time. Sorry.
----------

I imagine occasionally there were cave men (& women) with amblyopia, so the disease probably was known since prehistoric times. There is no reason to believe this condition only started happening in recent times. I'm certain the condition existed before the word for it was created. [They usually don't make up words ahead of time for diseases that havn't been observed yet !]

Added:

I am not saying cave men called the condition amblyopia, just that it probably existed even back then.

It is not that unusual to have a name for a disease long before they know what causes it or how to treat it.  (+ info)

I have hypermetropic astigmatism with amblyopia in my left eye, will this affect my capability to view 3d mov?

3d movies* if anyone knows, i would really like to know!! thanks :)
----------

Being hypermetropic means you have difficulty focusing on things that are close to you, and cinema screens and TVs are generallyfar enough away that this won't be a problem. Likewise, your astigmatism isn't relevant with relation to 3D viewing as this is merely a defect in the shape of the eyeball. Being amblyopic however, could cause problems viewing 3D movies depending on what system they use. Amblyopia or "lazy eye" means your brain is more reliant on and will provide better vision through one eye. If you were to watch a movie using the 80's style red and green lens glasses, I believe you could have a problem depending on how bad the amblyopia is. The newer system of 3D movies uses circularly polarizing filter glasses, which may be better, as this doesn't not work in the same way, however, the best way to test this would be to go and watch a movie! If you have any corrective eyewear you would normally wear to watch TV, wear them under the 3D glasses if possible.  (+ info)

I have amblyopia, and a wandering eye at times, (Lazy eye) but i can still see in 3D?

is it odd?, i can see in 3D when i concentrate really hard and focus, then i see perfectly
but when i do see the images i see are a mixture of green and red <-- thats normal right?
I am also turning 16 in a few months
----------

Yes, that is 'normal'. "Train your brain"

"Lazy brain" is a more accurate term to describe amblyopia. The term "lazy eye" is imprecise because it is also a layman's term for strabismus, particularly exotropia.

Amblyopia is a developmental problem in the brain, not an organic problem in the eye (although organic problems can induce amblyopia which persist after the organic problem has resolved).

Treatment of strabismic or anisometropic amblyopia consists of correcting the optical deficit and forcing use of the amblyopic eye, either by patching the good eye, or by instilling topical atropine in the eye with better vision. One should also be wary of over-patching or over-penalizing the good eye when treating for amblyopia, as this can create so-called "reverse amblyopia" in the other eye.
Treatment of individuals age 9 through adult has been proven through APPLIED PERCEPTUAL LEARNING.

Remember: Form deprivation amblyopia is treated by removing the opacity as soon as possible followed by patching or penalizing the good eye to encourage use of the amblyopic eye.  (+ info)

Can Amblyopia(lazy eye) be corrected at age 12?

My younger brother is currently wearing glasses and I have been researching any way to correct amblyopia then i came across a patch for the amblyotic eye can this wrok on a 12 year old boy (12 years 3 months) Thanks
----------

Patching achieves the best results before the age of 8 , but there have been some positive results shown recently in some people up to the early teens.

But it isn't as simple as buying a patch and having him wear it.

Patching too long can affect the good eye , so it should only be done under the guidance of an optometrist who has examined him. How bad the bad eye is and how good the good eye is make a difference in how long , and when , patching should be done.  (+ info)

If you have amblyopia(lazy eye) what scores can you get on the vision chart tests?

thanks.
if you really do have it, what score did u get?
----------

Would be based on the vision of the eyes; both separately and together.  (+ info)

How common is amblyopia?

And what casues it?
(Having a "weak eye" and a "good eye")
----------

Amblyopia is a partial or complete loss of vision in one eye caused by conditions that affect the normal development of vision. These conditions include strabismus, in which the eyes are crossed inward (esotropia) or turned outward (exotropia) and anisometropia, in which there is a major difference in refractive error between the two eyes from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. Less common causes of amblyopia include ptosis (drooping) of one eyelid, disease of the cornea (preventing light from entering the eye), congenital cataract, and injury to the eye of a young child.
Amblyopia affects 2 to 3% of children in the US.  (+ info)
