what is the difference between difference between Strabismus and Amblyopia?

http://www.kidsource.com/kidsource/content2/news2/strabismus.html
Strabismus is misalignment of the eyes. One eye may look straight ahead, while the other turns inward, outward, upward or downward. Although the problem appears to be improperly coordinated eye muscles, it is sometimes accompanied by vision loss.

Amblyopia is reduced vision in one or both eyes as a consequence of failure to develop normal sight in early childhood. Amblyopia can result from a number of underlying abnormalities, including strabismus and focusing abnormalities.  (+ info)

How much is a amblyopia surgery cost?

"LASIK surgery cost can be as low as $500 per eye. This price often forms the base for LASIK surgery cost, and many times the true total is much higher."  (+ info)

Amblyopia can be treated with surgery?

i was diagnosed with amblyopia and its too late for me to do the vision therapies cause im already 18 years old. is amblyopic eyes can be treated with surgery? if it is, what kind of surgery it is and how is the procedures? by the way, i dont have strabismus.
----------

No, Amblyopia isn't treated by surgery.

And, according to *some* authorities, 18 is late, but not too late, to try vision therapy. It may depend on how poor the vison is in the amblyopic eye, and how much effort you're prepared to put in.

Yes, there is uniform agreement that it is best to treat Amblyopia as young an age as possible.
There is not uniform agreement about the age at which attempting treatment is futile.

"When a criterion of 4 lines improvement was used, success rates at all ages under 16 were quite similar; in patients 16 and over, success by this criterion was significantly less frequent, but even in this group success was achieved by 42% of the patients."
"The case of a 45-year-old amblyope who was successfully treated is presented" (from second URL below)

This doesn't mean that every quack technique which offers an almost instant cure for amblyopia works. Far from it. There are charlatans out there.

There are genuine researchers who hope they have found the key to unlocking amblyopia easily, but this has not yet been confirmed by peer review. (URL3)  (+ info)

Can My Amblyopia hurt my other eye if i dont wear a contact?

my left eye is 20/40 but my right eye is 20/15, my parents say that i should use a contact for my left eye so that it can become balanced with my right eye, BUT i see perfectly fine because my right eye is dominant, so i see perfect throughout the day, the only time my vision is affected by Amblyopia is when im trying to use the peripheral of my bad eye. my question is, will not wearing a contact to balance out my two eyes have a negative effect on my bad eye or my good eye, will either eye get worse? i heard that after a certain age the "lazy eye" cant get any worse, is this true? or can my right eye be correcting for my left eye so much that it itself gets worse, someone please help.

thank you
----------

If your vision is correctable in your left eye, you do not have amblyopia. You have uneven vision. I have a similar situation to yours. My right eye is 20/20 and my left eye is 20/50. I wear a contact lens in my left eye when I go out and my glasses at home when needed usually while watching TV or playing video games..

Wearing the contact lens has improved my depth perception and reduced the headaches I would get while driving and performing other activities that require good distance vision. It has impacted my right eye in a positive way in that it does not have to do all the work anymore.

I suggest that you try out the contact lens and see how it goes. If it does not work for you, then you do not have to continue with it since your right eye has normal vision.  (+ info)

Anybody know if there is a scholarship offered for having a lazy eye also known as amblyopia ?

Go to your school counselor and talk to him/her.My daughter did alot of research and found scholarships for the weirdest things.Like being left handed, having green eyes, being of German descent, from single parent household, knowing sign language, the list was endless.Of course some of them were for $25.00 or so.But they added up to pay for 2 years of school so far.So I wouldn't be surprised if there is a scholarship for that.
Maybe call a collage and ask them for a list of scholarship sites and go from there.
Good luck :))  (+ info)

What causes amblyopia or the lazy eye?

how can it be treated?
----------

Causes of Lazy Eye
Anything that interferes with clear vision in either eye during the critical period (birth to 6 years of age) can cause amblyopia. The most common causes of amblyopia are constant strabismus (constant turn of one eye), anisometropia (different vision/prescriptions in each eye), and/or blockage of an eye due to cataract, trauma, lid droop, etc.

Amblyopia is a neurologically active process. In other words, the loss of vision takes place in the brain. If one eye sees clearly and the other sees a blur, the brain can inhibit (block, ignore, suppress) the eye with the blur. The brain can also suppress one eye to avoid double vision. The inhibition process (suppression) can result in a permanent decrease in the vision in the blurry eye that can not be corrected with glasses, lenses, or lasik surgery.
Treatment of Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)
Treatment involves glasses, drops, vision therapy and/or patching. Recent medical research has proven that amblyopia is successfully treated up to the age of 17. See National Institutes of Health -- National Eye Institute; Older Children Can Benefit From Treatment; Lazy Eye.

Treatment of amblyopia after the age of 17 is not dependent upon age but requires more effort including vision therapy. Although improvements are possible at any age with proper treatment, early detection and treatment still offer the best outcome.  (+ info)

I am 13 years old with amblyopia. Is it still curable?

I am 13 years old with amblyopia. Is it still curable?
----------

Amblyopia can be successfully treated up to the age of 17. See a report on the latest research at National Institutes of Health -- National Eye Institute. Early treatment is usually simple, employing glasses, drops, vision therapy and/or patching. Detection and correction before the age of two offers the best chance for a cure.

According to current research, amblyopia can not be cured -- normal 20/20 stereo vision -- without early detection and treatment. However, treatment for older children and adults is usually successful in improving vision and should be attempted. Treatment of amblyopia after the age of 17 is not dependent upon age but requires more effort including vision therapy. Every amblyopic patient deserves an attempt at treatment

Can amblyopia be cured at age 15 without surgery?

im to scared of surgery, is there any other way, like keep practising etc??
----------

Im sorry. There are no eye surgeries that can be done to help amblyopia. Patching or atropine eye drops usually dont work at age 15 either. Patching or use of atropine eye drops can be done to stregnthen the weak eye, but only works in children 8 and younger. There is a study that is going to be under way soon to look at the effectiveness of 2 drugs called Carbidopa and Levodopa. In previous studies it has seemed to be successful in many older kids. The medicine is actually used in patients with parkinson's but has shown promises to help improve the vision in some older kids. You should look for a Pediatric Ophthalmologist that can help you or direct you to a doctor that is part of the study, or currently treats children with this form of treatment. Good luck to you. Wish you all the best.  (+ info)

Can amblyopia (lazy eye) be corrected at age 17?

I'm 17 years old with mild amblyopia (20/200). I wear my glasses but I was wondering if I could still be able to patch the good eye to try & correct my lazy eye without causing my good eye to lose its vision or affecting it in any way.
----------

Unfortunately the answer is no. you can only treat amblyopia when the brain and eyes are in their plastic period - which means that you have some flexibility to help the eyes see better. this period only lasts upto the age of 8. after this the wiring from the brain to the eyes is more fixed and so patching will not help to restore your vision.  (+ info)

Can vision therapy reverse amblyopia?

I had strabismus surgery at age 18 months. At approximately 6 years of age I was diagnosed with amblyopia. My opthomologist attempted to patch my good eye, but I was too old at that point.

I am now 43 years old.

Is it too late to try vision therapy?
----------

Good natural eyesight improvement teachers have very good success in teaching people with amblyopia how the eye can be reactivated and regain fusion. In fact people with amblyopia often have quicker success than those Relearning to See from nearsightedness and presbyopia.

For most people with amblyopia they had a weakness in their head, most often from infection, that made one of the eyes difficult to use. This made that eye blurry. Because this blurriness is very different from the good eye the brain turned the image from that eye off leaving it to wander towards the slightly stronger or more active muscles. Most people overcome the original weakness, but they never learn how to fuse or what it looks like to have fusion.

Vision therapy often deals with exercising the eyes and is often counter productive even in youth. Surgery helps cosmetically but the eye often grows back because the eye is not activated.  (+ info)
