acidosis is low pH and alk is high pH
respiratory acid is low Ph and high CO2
resp alk is high Ph, low CO2
met acid is low pH and low bicarb
Met alk is lhigh pH and high bicarb
Then you need to look if it is compensated or not
So if you pH is normal or near normal but the bicarb and the CO2 are off then you have a compensated or partially compensated blood gas. It is very confusing to learn. (+ info
I know that vomiting would result to Met. Alkalosis, but why is SEVERE vomiting would result to Met. Acidosis?
I know that vomiting would result to Metabolic Alkalosis since its gastric content is out, but I have read in the pocket RN Notes that if the condition becomes SEVERE (vomiting,) it would result now to Metabolic Acidosis but there is no rationale provided.
When you vomit several times, you are at first throwing up much of the acids in your stomach, so that you develop metabolic alkalosis. However with severe vomiting, pretty soon you are also throwing up the contents of the small intestine, which contains a lot of bicarbonates (alkali), so that after a while, you develop metabolic acidosis. it all comes down to the ph. when the ph is low you are acidotic, when it is high, you are alkalotic. and the body needs to compensate for the ph. when you have resp acidosis it means the carbon dioxide is too high in the blood stream...the person is not breathing well. so, the body compensates for that by making the kidneys produce more bicarbonate, which increases the ph and in turn makes the acidosis go away. or at least get better. people with copd (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) usually have a chronic high bicarb level in their blood because their carbon dioxide level is chronically high. from their disease process. so the body is trying to compensate for that by making more bicarb.
when you have metabolic acidosis, like from diabetes, your ph is too low and your body tries to compensate by making your respiratory system slow down the breathing to increase the carbon dioxide to increase the ph.
and you just reverse the processes for alkalosis. (+ info
