To medical experts: How to prevent sebaceous cysts, and can they turn cancerous?

I have several sebaceous cysts all over my head. It seems like every 1 or 2 weeks I'll feel my scalp and there'll be a new one (which is usually tender at first). I used to just have one on the back of my head for the longest time, now they're all over! I'm not worried about them except for wondering if they've ever been known to turn into tumours or become malignant. That's also the reason I want to stop more from forming. (I've long had an issue with dandruff, dry scalp, and sometimes seborrheic dermatitis).
----------

Sebaceous cysts are benign. There are ways to treat them topically like shampoos and such; however, there is a treatment that involves the the use of an antibiotic which you may ask your dermatologist or primary care physician about. The antibiotic is called Doxycycline and it is taken orally (pill form). I know I said it's an antibiotic but in this case it works as an anti-seborrheic.

Please contact a doctor BEFORE you take any medications especially an antibiotic like this.  (+ info)

Can mercury injections help heal a sebaceous cyst?

Hi, I have a medium sized sebaceous cyst on my armpit. The doctor says it isn't harmful, but there is no "cure" and would have to remove it if I wanted it sorted. This is too expensive for me

A friend said that mercury injections can make them disappear which is a much cheaper option. I used some mercury from thermometers and injected it into my armpit. Nothing has happened yet. Am i using enough (i used 3 thermometers full)? Or does this simply take time?

I am also starting to get headaches.

i'd think molten lead would be a better option  (+ info)

What Can I do about a Vaginal Sebaceous Gland?

I have a small bump on the inner side of my labia, which was diagnosed by an OB/GYN as a sebaceous cyst. It's pretty small, but I'd like to get rid of it somehow. My OB/GYN said that they sometimes go away on their own, but if they're become larger or irritated/infected, that they are removed. Is there some way to quicken the disappearance of sebaceous cysts? Would a warm/hot washcloth help? How can I prevent them in the future? I don't understand how I got it in the first place, I'm a very clean person; I shower every morning, and take a long, warm bath at least once or twice a week.
----------

A sebaceous cyst is just a blocked oil gland, much like a pimple elsewhere on the body. Using warm packs may help them drain sooner by softening the plug. Just be careful not to burn yourself. Using warm sitz baths may help as well.

It's also possible that you are describing an Bartholin's cyst, which is a gland near the entroitus (entrance) of the vagina. This provides natural lubrication to the area, but occasionally becomes inflamed or infected. Sometimes antibiotics and local treatment with heat will resolve this, but they can become very large and painful and may need to be opened and even need a drain inserted. Some women may have one flare up in a lifetime and others have repeated problems that require surgical removal. (This is a fairly minor procedure, but has to be carefully done to prevent a relapse.)

Getting one of these doesn't mean you aren't hygienic, but good hygiene may mean they heal sooner. Overactive oil production is the culprit here and that just goes along with having hormones.  (+ info)

How do I remove my Sebaceous cysts?

For the past year I've been suffering with sebaceous cysts. Some were bad but have died down. However, I've got one my neck (that has died down a little too but is still a lump) and quite a hard one on my cheek. They're nothing grotesque but I hate the futility that they can't be removed. My GP said she wouldn't attempt removing them because they're too superficial.
I do rub acne cream on & take sulphur tablets to clean my blood out but has done nothing to remove them. I've also put warm water to draw them to a head but it doesn't work. Any ideas?

My cousin had some removed from her face, they may be superficial but they can be very troublesome. Change your doctor and get a second opinion;  (+ info)

My dog has a very small sebaceous cyst, can that be frozen off like a mole?

My dog has a BB sized sebaceous cyst and it is time to get it removed. I want to know if it can be frozen off rather than having her put under to have it cut out.
----------

have you asked your vet? most don't have that kind of equipment available in their clinics, although your town may have a specialist that would have a greater range of treatment plans available. if you're anywhere near a veterinary college, you may want to call them as well. they have the best equipment available in the world of animal medicine. if the anesthetic is an issue for your dog due to other health concens, your vet may *possibly* be able to give a local anesthetic rather than totally knocking the dog out.  (+ info)

How do i care for a sebaceous cyst?

This may sound gross, but thats life :)

About 2 weeks before Aug 28th, i discovered a bump growing behind my ear. on around the 25th i went to my primary care physician, and he said it was a sebaceous cyst. On the 28th, I got it drained.

between then and today, it started growing back. I remember my doctor said (between 25th and 28th) to keep lots of heat on it and it might eventually pop and release its fluids. So when it started growing back, i've been keeping a heating pad on it for about an hour a day.

Well just now, It popped. I went to the bathroom and tried to squeeze all the fluid, puss, and blood as i can. I seemed to get it all out. I rubbed some anti-bacterial cream that the doctor gave me last time i saw him on/around the hole. I put a cotton ball under a bandaid to soak up and blood.

So my question is something like:
What should i do to care for it to make sure it doesn't grow back?
I don't have any hydro peroxide, but i got rubbing alcohol and anti-bacterial cream.
----------

i ended up with 2 of these on my face. they have both left scarring which my doctor suggested that I go to a plastic surgeon to have fixed. Mine did reappear quite a few times, each doing the same thing - burst, grow back, burst etc. I went back to my doctor and he said the main cause of these are dirt. I work in an area where my office is completely surround by dirt which comes into the office everytime the trucks leave. I just have to continually keep washing my face. Keeping it clean is the main thing to do. I have not had either of them come back for at least 5 months now. I do find though even just putting moisturiser or sunscreen on my face can make them start to react. Being behind your ear I would also watch what shampoo and conditioner's you use. Also if you wear glasses, that may be irrating it and causing it. make sure they are clean and disinfected regularly  (+ info)

Can i remove a sebaceous cysts at home?

I have a sebaceous cysts on my scalp and i dont want to go to the doctors to remove it. If i sterilize something sharp and the area after removing the hair, would it be safe to make the incision and pull it out?
----------

I would strongly discourage against it. There are several reasons for it.

1) There are different types of sabaceous cysts, to put it simply some have a pus like fluid inside of them and others have a fibrous material. The fibrous material is very difficult to get rid of because it is rooted in the cyst. To try to remove this without anesthetic would give you immense pain.

2) You have to remove all of the cyst, especially if it is fibrous, because if you don't the cyst will come back.

3) Your scalp bleeds more than any other part of your body. If you made an incision blood would pump out at seemingly alarming levels. It is not life threatening, but it would make the procedure more difficult.

4) Infection. Whether it is keratinous (pus/fatty fluid) or fibrous tissues, it doesn't matter because after you make the incision and empty the wound as best you can, you can develop a very bad infection.

Because it is on your head and you'll need someone's help, I suggest you just save yourself a lot of pain and possible future misery by going to the doctor and getting it taken care of by a professional.

You can first try taking a rag with hot water and place it on the cyst. It may help the material inside of the cyst, if not fibrous, be reabsorbed back into the body.

Good luck.  (+ info)

What to expect with Adenocarcinoma cancer?

My brother was just diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma cancer after he had a tumor removed (they tested the tumor after removal). This is the same type that our mother died from when she was in her early 40's. My brother is only 27. He is going to see a specialist soon. What should he expect? Will they give him a stage that his cancer is in? I don't understand how this could happen, because he's only 27. He smokes, for most of his life he has, will this effect it?
The tumor was in his neck in a gland.
----------

They will give him a stage when he goes to the doctor. i dont think it is a good idea for him to be smoking anymore best if he quits. i cant give you an answer right now on what to expect until you know the stage he is in, but if its in like stage one or two then it might be operable and some kemo and radiation, but after that im not sure. let me know what stage and i will find out more.  (+ info)
