Is it a good idea to remove a sebaceous cyst?

I just got back from a doctors appointment, and he pointed out that the bump on my back is a sebaceous cyst. He said its up to me if I want to have him remove it. He said its not necessary, but it could get bigger or if it bothers me then he can do the procedure.

Just curious, if anyone else has had a sebaceous cyst and if they decided to get it removed or not?
----------

it's better to get rid of it. all it is, is a glorified pimple, bacteria has entered a follicle and got infected it could become big and painful later.  (+ info)

How can I make my scalps produce more sebum from the sebaceous glands?

I'm from Yemen and unlike my brother's, my hair is dry more or less like short afro hair. I want to make my hair permanently soother and soft and less importantly straighter?

I did a little research that people with smooth, soft hair produce more sebum from the sebaceous glands. Is there something to make mine do the same?

PLEASE NOTE: I am not asking for common topical hair products. This would probably be an oral supplement that effects the root cause.
----------

regular massages in the scalp.. i heard it helps stimulates something.. hope this kinda helped..  (+ info)

What's the difference between a pilonidal cyst and a sebaceous cyst?

I had a pilonidal cyst on my tailbone and a sebaceous cyst on my private area. Both were quite painful! How do docs make the distinciton between the two? It seems like both are caused by roughly the same thing, so what is the difference?
----------

"Schwinn" already gave you a pretty good explanation. A pilonidal cyst often but not always develops in the sacral region of the skin. The sacrum is the large, triangular bone that makes up the back of your pelvis. Pilonidal cysts sometimes appear at birth as a depression or a hairy dimple. Usually this type of cyst causes no problems but sometimes a sinus or fistula develops in early adulthood. The sinus or fistula may communicate with the skin and result in infection. A fistula may also develop to the spinal tract.

Sebum is the oily secretion of the sebaceous glands of the skin and is composed of keratin, fat and cellular debris. Sebaceous cyst is the same as an epidermoid cyst. It's benign and is in the skin (epidermis). It contains a cheesy material composed of sebum and epithelial debris.

They can usually be distinguished by location and appearance.  (+ info)

how do i get rid of sebaceous cysts at home?

my neck has a smooth bump on it. It was small for a year amd has got bigger over time. Is this a sebaceous cyst and if it is what can i do to get rid of it at home?
----------

Cysts is the way the body walls off germs. Warts are the same type of thing. Typically cysts form when the body is very deficient in minerals and depending upon where the cyst is located, you need to look for infection sites that are most likely the root cause. I would see a doctor to get his opinion and then you can make an informed decision as to what to do. Don't be afraid of the doctor, he can help diagnose the problem. You are in control and can make the decisions about your health. Once you know what the problem is, it will be much easier to deal with it.

I would also look for the infection and at your diet to help determine what caused the problem in the first place. If you have low hydrochloric acid production, you will not be digesting minerals very well.

Because the cyst is on your neck, I would look very carefully at your teeth. If you have had any dental work done, start there. The chemicals used to deaden your nerves, except for Septocaine, are aggressively carcinogenic and contain huge amounts of toxins. In fact, one 2 cc shot of novocaine, Lidocaine, procaine, carbocaine, etc. is equal to you smoking a pack of cigarettes per day for 12.9 years. That is NOT trivial. If you have any amalgam fillings, there is infection breeding under everyone of those fillings. Any root canals will have NICO (deterioration of the jaw bone) under them and can contribute to cysts.

Another possibility is that what you have is a swollen lymph node. That is due to an excess of toxins in your body and the body is trying to eliminate them and this has overloaded the lymphatic system.

good luck to you  (+ info)

How do you clean/unclog/clear your sebaceous glands?

I have acne and read your sebaceous glands cause acne, not sweat glands. So how can you clear them so that your skin would become healthy and clean? Also would over cleaning cause anything bad to happen?
----------

soap, warm water and a good roughish wash cloth then rinsing very very well and using a good astringent like Witch Hazel works about the best of any thing. Do this two or three times a day. In summer I keep Witch Hazel on cotton pads in a closed container in the fridge for a quick refresher! It helps a lot.

Never, Never put your hands on your face unless you have just washed them. This will put dirt and germs into the open sores of the acne.
After you have it cleared up, then you have created a habit of never touching your face until you have washed so it doesn't come back.  (+ info)

Am I supposed to miss a week of school to have a sebaceous cyst removed?

I've got a sebaceous cyst just below my eyebrow which is about an inch long, and I'm getting it removed in a couple of weeks. The surgeon says I should probably stay off school for the week. Is it normal to miss this much school to have a cyst removed? I have my gcses this year so I really don't want to miss too much.
----------

Sebaceous cysts generally do not require medical treatment. However, if they continue to grow, they may become unsightly, painful, infected, or all of the above. Surgical excision of a sebaceous cyst is a simple procedure to completely remove the sac and its contents. Under no circumstances must one try to pop the cyst as it can lead to infection of the surrounding tissue. The neck is a vitally dangerous region due to the glands and blood vessels. An infected cyst may require oral antibiotics or other treatment before excision. Another common and effective method of treatment involves placement of a heat-pad directly on the cyst for about fifteen minutes, twice daily, for about 10 days (depending on size and location of the cyst).[1] This method works by bringing the temperature of the wax-like material inside of the cyst to a temperature at which it melts and can be reabsorbed and processed by the body as a small amount of oily fluid. This method is preferred over surgery both for reasons of associated costs and risks of surgery. This methodology is not applicable for non-sebaceous cysts, however, as other varieties of cysts do not contain the same hardened sebum deposits, and therefore do not melt to be reabsorbed by the body.

It is all going to depend on how yo feel. I think you should feel fine to go to schools sooner and may just take pain meds at night and get extra rest when taking them. At the most if you heal fast 3-4 days of bed rest should do it.  (+ info)

How long can a scar stay sore after sebaceous cyst removed?

Had a sebaceous cyst removed on 8/4/09 and it was about a 1cm deep and I had 2 stitches to close the wound after extraction. It is still a tad tender --is this normal?--medical expert advice will be helpful--thanks
----------

Yes. It could stay tender and sore for quite awhile. Just relax. Before you know it, you won't notice it anymore.

How do I have a sebaceous cyst removed?

I have a small sebaceous cyst on my neck, but the doctor won't removed it. She says it's 'superficial', and too risky (as it's on my throat). Could I have it removed in a private clinic? Laser surgery? And how much would it cost?
Come on, guys. It makes me self-conscious. I also have two little ones close together on my cheek.
----------

I wouldn't recommend it
If a doctor tells you that something is too risky and not to mess with it, most likely other doctors will agree and not take action on it
Those who do are seeking money and don't care what the risk is for you. So long as it isn't bothering you too much just leave it alone  (+ info)

How much does it cost to have a sebaceous cyst removed?

I have had several sebaceous cysts on my neck for several years now. I had them checked by my primary doctor and he said they were sebaceous and harmless but I want them removed. Obvoiusly, insurance doesn't cover cosmetic surgery so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this procedure and what I would be looking at in terms of cost and recovery time. TiA.

btw..I have three small ones all in a 1 square inch area on my neck near my adams apple. maybe i get a proximity discount if I get all three at same time?
----------

lol there is no proximity discount, you can contact a local dermatologist or surgeons office, cost will vary from office to office and region to region. What they can consider is to make one big incision in the same area and remove them all, if they decide to remove them. and then is a decision to send the biospy material for pathology and that has a separate cost issue, not all specimens are sent though, the operator (surgeon and dermatologist) decides based on a number of factors, good luck  (+ info)

Does anyone know of a safe way to remove a sebaceous cyst?

I have 3 sebaceous cysts on my head. Although they are covered by my hair, I want to get rid of them. I had one removed by the doctor. It was very costly, and the cyst came back. I wonder if there is a way to draw them out or bring them to the surface? What causes these? I have good hygeine, and am healthy.
----------

Even thought it's costly, you need to go to a dermatologist. If anyone will know how to get rid of them for good he (or she) will. If you try to do it yourself you run the risk of infection. Good luck!  (+ info)
