What's the difference between spontaneous abortion, miscarriage, and stillbirth?

I'm pretty sure there's a difference between stillbirth and miscarriage, but are spontaneous abortion and miscarriage two different things?
----------

Okay, first for the people that don't know what "spontaneous" means, it means without a plan. In other words it was not a choice or planned.

A spontaneous abortion is the MEDICAL term for a miscarriage. The two words are interchangable.

A stillbirth is when the fetus is technically old enough to survive outside of the uterus, but dies in the uterus...usually they have to induce labor and you have to deliver the baby. Or they will simply do a c-section and remove the baby.

Most spontaneous abortions/miscarriages happen within the first trimester (rarely between 13-24 weeks, after 24 weeks it is considered a still birth).

A spontaneous abortion or miscarriage does not require a death certificate, however most states do issue one for a still birth after 24 weeks of pregnancy.  (+ info)

If had a spontaneous abortion then why do i still have pregnancy symptoms?

The doctor told me i was prego on the 27th. On the 1st i started bleeding so on the 3rd of may i took a home pregnancy test and it came up negative. I went to the doctor for my first prenatal appointment and he said everything looked ok.. but they didn't give me an ultrasound. The next day they called me and told me that i had a spontaneous abortion. Why do i still have all the pregnancy symptoms as i did before i even found out that i was prego?
----------

If you started bleeding on the first you'd still have a positive pregnancy test on the 3rd.. It's impossible for the hormone to get out of your system that quickly..

And how could he ring you and tell you you had a spontaneous abortion? How would he know if he didn't give you an ultrasound?...

I find that a little odd.  (+ info)

Can you tell when a woman has had an spontaneous abortion?

I had an spontaneous abortion when I was young and I'm wondering if a doctor will be able to tell by just checking me out.
----------

Not necessarily, unless it caused scarring. That's why when you fill out the paperwork at the docs office they ask how many live births and how many miscarriages/abortions you have had. They like to watch you a little closer when you've had miscarriages to ensure all goes well with current pregnancies. Take care.  (+ info)

what are some causes of a spontaneous abortion?

i was suposed to be a godmother in september but my best friend who was pregnant lost the baby at 4 months. i haven't talked to her yet she is very upset which is expected, but i just need an idea on what could have happend to calm my nerves.
----------

The cause of most spontaneous abortions is fetal death due to fetal genetic abnormalities, usually unrelated to the mother. Other possible causes for spontaneous abortion include infection, physical problems the mother may have, hormonal factors, immune responses, and serious systemic diseases of the mother (such as diabetes or thyroid problems).

It is estimated that up to 50% of all fertilized eggs die and are lost (aborted) spontaneously, usually before the woman knows she is pregnant. Among known pregnancies, the rate of spontaneous abortion is approximately 10% and usually occurs between the 7th and 12th weeks of pregnancy.

The risk for spontaneous abortion is higher in women over age 35, in women with systemic diseases such as diabetes or thyroid problems, and women with a history of three or more prior spontaneous abortions.  (+ info)

if your pregnant and have a spontaneous abortion will a pregnancy test still read postive?

I had unprotected sex in april and didn't have a period for three months, i was showing signs of being pregnant but this morning i started bleeding heavily and saw clots of some kind. (sorry for the graphic details). i also had cramping that made me physically ill. I took a pregnancy test earlier in the week and it was negative but i don't know if the fetus not being alive would affect it. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go 2 the doctors as soon as possible only they can tell you whats really happened ..

Your baby may still be alive and you need the doctors for some medical help ,you and your babies lives are at risk ...

Can u be feel fine 1 day & overnight have a spontaneous abortion?

Do the symptoms of bleeding/cramping happen for a few days or does it happen all at once?
----------

When I had a miscarriage it happened in the space of 24 hours. The night before I went to the bathroom and saw some blood. The next morning there was a little more blood but no cramping. I went to he hospital and confirmed that the fetus had died. By 5 PM that night, I started cramping heavily and hemorrhaging. By 2AM, it was over. I was 10 weeks 6 days.  (+ info)

can large Y chromosome cause spontaneous abortion? where does large Y come from? aberrant or heredofamilial? ?

I have a large Y chromosome and my wife's first pregnant aborted, but my family have no spontaneous abortion before. my cousin (30 years older than me) has his grandson already. how can this happen?
----------

Your genetic counsellor is the only one in a position to tell you this as they will have your full history.  (+ info)

I think I had a spontaneous abortion?

I'm not sure but I think I spontaneously aborted my pregnancy. Is there anyway to save the pregnancy or is it to late? I'm still cramping and spotting. I'd be in my ninth week. Do I need to go to the hospital?
----------

YES, DEFINITELY GO NOW AND NO THEY WON'T THINK YOU ARE SILLY. If there is anything at all to worry about thay will give you a scan. If it is too early to see on a normal scan they may offer an internal scan which is a very small probe placed in your vagina. I had the same symptoms so I know from experience. There are many things they can do but even if it is too late you should be checked out just in case.  (+ info)
