1/3. Cardiac anaesthesia in a patient with myotonic dystrophy. We describe a patient with myotonic dystrophy who required open-heart surgery for an atrial septal defect. He also had a sick sinus syndrome and an abnormal myocardium on histological examination. Anaesthesia using fentanyl, droperidol, nitrous oxide and a low concentration of enflurane was uneventful. Atelectasis of the left lung developed on the first postoperative day after removal of the tracheal tube. This was successfully treated by fibreoptic bronchoscopy.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1keywords = anaesthesia (Clic here for more details about this article) |
2/3. sick sinus syndrome manifest after spinal anaesthesia.A case of sick sinus syndrome which presented as a cardiac arrest following spinal anaesthesia is reported. The diagnosis of sick sinus syndrome, the cardiovascular effects of spinal anaesthesia and the anaesthetic management of patients with the syndrome are discussed.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 1.5keywords = anaesthesia (Clic here for more details about this article) |
3/3. Transoesophageal cardiac pacing. An elderly patient, whilst undergoing anaesthesia for a total hip replacement, developed a marked bradydysrhythmia suggestive of sick sinus syndrome. The heart rate was unaffected by atropine 1.2 mg administered intravenously. Cardiac pacing was achieved by means of a non-invasive transoesophageal pacemaking catheter. The simplicity of this technique although temporary, is ideal for emergencies.- - - - - - - - - - ranking = 0.25keywords = anaesthesia (Clic here for more details about this article) |
