1/10. Recurrent myxoma of the left ventricle. Case report and review of the literature.

A 29-year-old female was found to have a left ventricular mass while in the 14th week of gestation. Seven years earlier she had undergone removal of a left ventricular myxoma. At re-operation, after elective interruption of pregnancy, a recurrent left ventricular myxoma was successfully excised. According to a review of the literature recurrence of an isolated, localized left ventricular myxoma has not been previously reported.

2/10. Recurrent myxoma implanted in the left atrial appendage.

We present the case of a young woman who developed myxomas in multiple cardiac chambers for the third time. One of the tumors was found in the left atrial appendage with the use of transesophageal echocardiography, indicating that this technique is the method of choice for the follow-up of multiple myxomas.

3/10. Aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare soft tissue tumour that carries a high risk of local relapse. It is a slowly growing and locally infiltrating tumour. CASE: We describe the case of an aggressive pelvic-perineal angiomyxoma arising in a 36-year-old woman. The patient had a mass that grew before, during and after her pregnancy. Transperineal surgery was performed. The resection margins were free of disease. CONCLUSION: Our case confirms what has previously been published concerning the possible hormone-dependence of this neoplasm. Given the positive estrogen and progesterone receptor status of this tumour, we will consider hormonal treatments in the case of a future relapse.

4/10. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the heart. A case report and review of the literature.

A case report of a 28-year-old woman with malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) of the left atrium is presented, and the six previous reports of this rare cardiac tumor are reviewed. A tendency for malignant fibrous histiocytoma of the heart to occur in the left atrium of young women is suggested; this sarcoma's usual location is in the soft tissue of elderly men. The apparent predilection for the left atrium is unique among cardiac malignancies. Careful pathologic study is necessary to differentiate the uniformly fatal MFH of the heart from the more common benign atrial myxoma.

5/10. Atrial myxoma as a complication of tocolytic therapy. A case report.

A 27-year-old woman who presented with premature labor was given ritodrine for tocolysis. During the administration of the beta-sympathomimetics she developed cardiac changes, including subendocardial ischemia on EKG and an intermittent early diastolic sound. echocardiography revealed a large left atrial myxoma. It was removed during pregnancy, and the patient tolerated the procedure well. The mechanism of the ischemia was believed to result from the space-occupying mass of the myxoma, preventing adequate atrial filling and subsequent congestive failure. It is recommended that patients who develop cardiac symptoms during tocolysis with beta-sympathomimetics undergo further investigation to rule out under-lying pathology.

6/10. Hormone-dependent, aggressive angiomyxoma of the vulva.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare neoplasm of undetermined etiology that occurs mainly in the female vulva and perineum. It tends to recur but does not metastasize. This case report describes findings suggestive of the possible hormone dependency of this neoplasm. CASE: A 41-year-old gravid woman developed an aggressive angiomyxoma of the left vulva with growth apparently related to the length of the pregnancy. The neoplasm marked strongly for progesterone receptors by immunohistochemical methods but was estrogen-receptor negative. CONCLUSION: The growth of the neoplasm during pregnancy and the nuclear-positive staining for progesterone receptors suggest a possible hormone (progesterone) dependency for at least some cases of aggressive angiomyxoma.

7/10. color Doppler ultrasound in prenatal diagnosis of umbilical cord angiomyxoma. Case report.

A pregnant woman, at 28 weeks' gestation, has been observed ultrasonographically. A complex mass arising from the umbilical cord was detected. color Doppler imaging demonstrated the vascular nature of the mass and the strictly connection with the three umbilical vessels. color Doppler ultrasound provides useful informations for a correct assessment of the masses arising from the umbilical cord.

8/10. Successful pregnancy in a patient with pseudomyxoma peritonei arising from ovarian mucinous cystadenocarcinoma treated with cisplatin.

A 24-year-old Japanese woman clinically showing pseudomyxoma peritonei arising from ovarian mucinous cystadenocarcinoma FIGO stage Ic is reported. She received intra-abdominal administrations of cisplatin five times following left oophorectomy. After being free of disease for 6 months, she conceived and carried two pregnancies to successful deliveries at 34 and 37 weeks, respectively. At the Cesarean sections, there were no abnormal findings except for right ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. She has had no evidence of recurrence by the time of the 60-month postoperative examination.

9/10. Recurrent left atrial myxoma in a patient with a twin fetus pregnancy.

We experienced a case of a recurrent left atrial myxoma in a pregnant woman with twin fetuses. Normal healthy twins weighing 1430 and 1190 gm were delivered by cesarean section performed under epidural anesthesia at 32 weeks gestation. Neither cardiac failure nor embolisms were observed during pregnancy or delivery. The left atrial myxoma was removed surgically one week after delivery. The infants and mother remain in good health. According to previous reports and our present observations, the decision for cardiac surgery during pregnancy should be based on the maternal and fetal status.

10/10. Aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvis: a clinicopathologic study of a case.

A case of aggressive angiomyxoma in a 38-year-old pregnant woman is described. These clinicopathologically distinctive soft tissue tumors comprise a quite rare entity. They are usually located in the pelvic or perineal soft parts and occur predominantly in women. On gross inspection, these lesions are typically soft bulky masses, frequently with a multilobulated contour and of gelatinous appearance. They are characterized by slow growth, infiltration of adjacent structures, absence of distant metastases and a tendency to recur locally, probably secondary to incomplete excision. Therefore, treatment should consist of wide surgical excision, as complete as technically possible. This is the second case of aggressive angiomyxoma of the pelvis occurring in a pregnant woman.
