1/4. dermoid cyst of the tongue: an association of dermoid cyst with bronchogenic epithelium.A congenital dermoid together with a bronchogenic cyst of the tongue is extremely rare. The diagnosis made in this case of a 1-year-old boy was "teratoid cyst of the tongue". A surgical exploration was performed under general anaesthesia via a midline sagittal glossotomy. The tumour was completely dissected and excised, the microscopical examination of the surgical specimen revealed multiple cystic cavities lined by a keratinized squamous epithelium with skin appendages and fatty tissue. Others were composed of cylindrical, ciliated epithelial cells of respiratory type. This is the third reported case in the world literature. 2/4. Dermoids ('hairy polyps') of the oro-nasopharynx.Dermoids, or hairy polyps, are rare lesions affecting the head and neck region. To date approximately 120 cases have been recorded. They arise during early embryogenesis and are invariably benign. Unlike the more differentiated types of teratoma, hairy polyps are derived from only two germinal layers, ectoderm and mesoderm. Most originate in the oro-nasopharyngeal region, either as pedunculated or sessile masses. They usually present at, or soon after, birth with signs of upper aerodigestive tract obstruction. Treatment consists of surgical removal. In young children with airway compromise, the expertise of an experienced paediatric anaesthetist is essential. Three new cases of hairy polyp are described to add to the present literature. Two originated in the nasopharynx and one in the oropharynx. Interestingly, one patient, a neonate, also suffered from severe osteopetrosis. All lesions were removed by simple surgical excision under general anaesthesia. Congenital trigeminal neuropathy in oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia-hemifacial microsomia (Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome).A 2 1/2 year old child with clinical features of Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome showed diminished pinprick sensation over the right half of the face. After surgery for the cleft lip, the child died. Neuropathological investigations showed agenesis of the right trigeminal nerve and hypoplasia of the right trigeminal brain-stem nuclei. Nosological aspects of the Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome and previously reported cases of congenital trigeminal anaesthesia in this disorder are discussed. 4/4. Hairy polyp of the tonsil.Hairy polyps or dermoids of the oro- and naso-pharynx are benign lesions containing elements of both ectodermal and mesodermal origin. We report a case of a hairy polyp arising from the tonsil in a three-week-old infant. This presented as an intermittent swelling in the mouth, which was successfully removed under general anaesthesia. To our knowledge this is only the third case of a hairy polyp arising at this site to be reported.
